[Ling Shu] The Yellow Emperor asked: What qi mechanism causes people to be prone to forgetfulness? Qibo replied: When the qi in the upper part is insufficient and the qi in the lower part is excessive, the intestines and stomach are full while the heart qi is deficient. Due to this deficiency, Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) qi remain stagnant in the lower part, and over time fail to ascend to the upper part when they should, thus leading to forgetfulness. (From "Da Huo Lun")

According to Yunqi (Five Movements and Six Qi) theory, amnesia belongs to Heart Fire deficiency. The classics state: When Fire movement is insufficient, it is called Fu Ming (Hidden Brightness). In the Ji (Pattern) of Fu Ming, the disease manifests as dizziness or sorrowful forgetfulness. It also states: When Taiyang governs the year, cold qi descends, and Heart qi follows upward, leading to amnesia. It also states: When Taiyang reversion occurs, if severe, it enters the Heart, manifesting as amnesia and sorrow.
