The above prescriptions nourish essence and blood; they are pure tonics, suitable for blood deficiency.
[Zhu Danxi] Treat upper jiao qi rebellion with panting, cough, hematemesis, hemoptysis. Fine powder of Ren Shen, mixed with egg white (Ji Zi Qing), take 3 qian. Take at dawn (wugeng), then sleep supine without a pillow. One dose cures it. Repeat for chronic cases. Avoid sour, salty, vinegar, soy sauce, noodles, excessive drunkenness, and overeating. Must rest well.
A 30-year-old man, due to overnight fatigue and lack of sleep, developed phlegm-cough, expelling white-yellow pus, unable to produce cough sound. It was early spring with severe cold. The doctor gave Qing Long Tang (Green Dragon Decoction) for four doses. He then felt blood streaks in the throat and a bloody odor rising up. Two days later, the bloody odor increased, and a thread of blood shot straight up from the right side of his mouth, occurring more than ten times a day and night. His pulse was wiry, large, scattered, and weak, especially on the left. He was fatigued and suffered from cough. I diagnosed it as fatigue combined with cold invasion. I forcibly used sweet, acrid, dry, and hot agents, which moved the blood. It was not appropriate to treat urgently with hemostatics, lest it become lung atrophy. So I gave Ren Shen, Huang Qi, Dang Gui Shen, Bai Zhu, Shao Yao, Chen Pi, Zhi Gan Cao, Sheng Gan Cao, Ma Huang (with nodes), decocted, added Ou Zhi (Lotus root juice), and gave it to him. After two days, the illness decreased and cough stopped. Then, removing Ma Huang from the previous formula, he took it for another four days, and the blood symptoms were eliminated. The scattered and large pulse had not converged, and he was very tired. So, removing Ou Zhi from the previous formula, adding Huang Qin, Suo Sha, Ban Xia, he recovered in half a month.
*[Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang]* Jie Lao San treats lung atrophy with phlegm-cough, red lines in sputum, night sweats, fever, feeling cold after fever subsides, and reduced appetite.

Each 2 liang).
Chop coarsely. Take 3 qian each time, with 1.5 cups of water, 2 slices of Sheng Jiang, 3 dates, decoct to 90%, take warm anytime, three times a day. Chen Rihua said: A girl past puberty was critically ill, ineffective with hundreds of medicines in a year. Accidentally getting this prescription, one dose cured her root.
[Luo Tianyi] Wu Wei Zi Huang Qi San treats cough, hemoptysis leading to consumption, eye pain, limb fatigue, and weak knees/feet.

Make coarse powder. First decoct a handful of Zhu Ye (Bamboo leaf), 70 grains of Xiao Mai (Wheat), 3 cups of water, 3 slices of Sheng Jiang, until 1.5 cups remain. Add 3 qian of herb powder, decoct to 70%, remove dregs, take warm.
Xi Yanshang treats deficiency with internal heat, cough with purulent blood, bitter taste in mouth, dry throat, where cooling medicines are contraindicated. Use 4 liang of good Huang Qi, 1 liang Gan Cao, grind to powder. Take 3 qian each time. Mix into soup or porridge like tea.
The above Shen and Qi examples are pure tonics. Danxi said: Large pulse with fever indicates qi deficiency. This is suitable for those with both qi and blood deficiency. If blood deficient but qi not deficient, do not use it; instead, use the previous E Jiao Wan or seek methods from the "Stagnant Blood" section.
[Zhu Danxi] A 56-year-old woman, in midsummer, vomited red phlegm, with one or two coughs.
Radix Ginseng (Ren Shen) (1 qian), Ramulus Saposhnikoviae (Fang Feng) (5 fen), Radix Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Bai Zhu) (1.5 qian), Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (Chen Pi), Poria (Fu Ling) (each 2 qian), Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum (Gan Jiang) (3 fen), Radix Glycyrrhizae Recens (Sheng Gan Cao) (1 fen), Radix Platycodi (Jie Geng) (0.5 qian).
Decoct to one-third volume, add 2 large clam-shell measures of Ou Zhi (Lotus root juice), decoct again, take warm, followed by San Huang Wan (Three Yellows Pill).
Wang Sizhang (24th senior) had fever, hypochondriac pain, cough with red phlegm, thirst, constipation, fatigue. Pulse slightly rapid and deficient. Inquiry revealed he drank a bowl of water during fever. Etiology: irregular diet led to accumulated phlegm; drinking cold water upon onset injured stomach (deficiency) and lung (phlegm).
Radix Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Bai Zhu) (1.5 qian), Radix Ginseng (Ren Shen), Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (Chen Pi), Radix Chuanxiong (Chuan Xiong) (each 1 qian), Radix Paeoniae (Shao Yao), Poria (Fu Ling), Radix Platycodi (Jie Geng), Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gan Cao) (each 5 fen, fried).
Make two doses, decoct to 80%, add 2 fen of Zhu Li (Bamboo juice), boil again, drink warm, followed by Long Hui Wan (Dragon Gallbladder Pill) 20 pills. If coughing, 30 pills.
This is Danxi's method using Shen, Zhu, Ou Zhi, and Zhu Li.
Large pulse with fever and throat pain indicates qi deficiency. Use Ren Shen, Huang Qi, Mi Zhi Huang Bo (Honey-fried Phellodendron), Jing Jie, Di Huang, Dang Gui, Jiu Zhi (Leek juice), Tong Bian (Child's urine), Jiang Zhi (Ginger juice), grind Yu Jin (Curcuma) and drink. Bleeding stops spontaneously.
The above Shen and Qi plus Yu Jin, Jiu Zhi, Tong Bian method tonifies middle and resolves stagnation.
[Luo Tianyi] Huang Qi Bie Jia San treats deficiency-labor with guest-heat, muscle wasting, limb fatigue, five-palm heat, dry mouth/throat, red cheeks, palpitations, evening tidal fever, night sweats, chest/hypochondriac discomfort, reduced appetite/thirst, sticky cough, occasional purulent blood.
Radix Astragali (Huang Qi) (1 liang), Cortex Mori Radicis (Sang Bai Pi), Rhizoma Pinelliae (Ban Xia), Radix Scutellariae (Huang Qin), Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gan Cao, fried), Radix Anemarrhenae (Zhi Mu), Radix Paeoniae Rubra (Chi Shao Yao), Flos Asteris (Zi Wan) (each 5 qian), Radix Gentianae Macrophyllae (Qin Jiao), Poria (Bai Fu Ling, baked), Radix Rehmanniae Recens (Sheng Di), Radix Bupleuri (Chai Hu), Cortex Lycii (Di Gu Pi) (each 6 qian 6 fen), Ramulus Cinnamomi (Rou Gui), Radix Ginseng (Ren Shen), Radix Platycodi (Jie Geng) (each 3 qian 2 fen), Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis (Bie Jia - skirt removed, fried with butter), Folium Asparagi (Tian Men Dong - heart removed, baked. Each 1 liang).
Make coarse powder. Take 2 large qian each time, 1 cup of water, decoct after meals.
Ren Shen Huang Qi San treats deficiency-labor with guest-heat, muscle wasting, limb fatigue, five-palm heat, dry throat/red cheeks, palpitations/tidal fever, night sweats/reduced appetite, cough with purulent blood.

Make coarse powder. Take 3 qian each time, remove dregs and take.
The above Shen, Qi, Bie Jia examples represent tonification with unblocking.
[Luo Tianyi] Ren Shen Ge Jie San treats two-to-three-year history of lung qi rebellion with panting/cough, spitting purulent blood, facial sores, generalized yellow edema.
Ge Jie (Gecko pair, whole, soaked in river water for 5 nights, changing water daily to remove fishy smell, fried with butter to yellow), Fructus Armeniacae (Xing Ren - skin/pit removed, fried, 5 liang), Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gan Cao - fried, 3 liang), Radix Ginseng (Ren Shen), Poria (Fu Ling), Rhizoma Pinelliae (Bei Mu), Radix Anemarrhenae (Zhi Mu), Cortex Mori Radicis (Sang Bai Pi) (each 2 liang).
Grind to fine powder, store in porcelain. Take like tea daily, miraculous effect.
[Zhang Yuansu] Ge Jie is effective for tonifying lung labor-deficiency cough, treating persistent cough not healing, empty heat accumulating in lung, forming sores over time, thus coughing purulent blood morning and evening, throat obstruction, chest/diaphragm choking pain. Use Ge Jie, E Jiao, Cornu Rhinocerotis Recens (Sheng Xi Jiao), Cornu Cervi Colla (Lu Jiao Jiao), Cornu Saigae Tataricae (Ling Yang Jiao) each 1 liang. Except for glues, grind all to powder, then mix in glues. Divide into four doses. Each dose decoct with 3 sheng river water in silver/copper vessel over slow fire until 0.5 sheng remains, filter dregs, sip warm slowly before bed. Grind residue again after finishing, combine as one dose, decoct with 3 sheng water until 0.5 sheng, take as before. For chronically deficient patients who dislike water, reduce water amount.
The above Ge Jie example also represents tonification with unblocking, suitable for persistent cough.
Mai Men Dong Tang treats post-Shanghan lung injury, cough/spitting purulent blood, chest/hypochondriac fullness, upper jiao qi rebellion with emaciation.
Folium Ophiopogonis (Mai Men Dong - heart removed), Cortex Mori Radicis (Sang Bai Pi), Radix Rehmanniae Recens (Sheng Di) (each 1 liang), Rhizoma Pinelliae (Ban Xia - washed 7 times in boiling water), Flos Asteris (Zi Wan), Radix Platycodi (Jie Geng - fried), Caulis Bambusae in Taenia (Dan Zhu Ru), Ramulus Ephedrae (Ma Huang - roots/nodes removed. Make coarse powder, decoct in ginger-water.
The above Mai Dong and Wu Wei Zi examples also represent tonification with unblocking.
*[Wai Tai Mi Yao]* Prescription for treating injury-spitting blood. Use only Mao Gen (Imperata Rhizome), take 1 fang cun bi (measure), three times a day. Can also squeeze juice and drink. Treats heat-thirst.
[Zhu Danxi] Treat labor-abscess corpse-transmission, alternating chills/fever, persistent cough/hemoptysis, gradual emaciation. First take San Ao Tang and Lian Xin San, failure rate is zero.
San Ao Tang
Ramulus Ephedrae (Ma Huang - with nodes), Radix Glycyrrhizae Recens (Sheng Gan Cao), Fructus Armeniacae (Xing Ren - with skin/pit).
Chop coarsely, decoct with Sheng Jiang and Da Zao.
Lian Xin San
Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Dang Gui), Radix Scutellariae (Huang Qin), Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gan Cao - fried), Fructus Aurantii (Zhi Ke - fried), Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis (Bie Jia - vinegar-fried), Radix Peucedani (Qian Hu), Radix Bupleuri (Chai Hu), Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae (Fang Ji), E Jiao, Semen Nelumbinis (Lian Rou - heart removed), Rhizoma Arisaematis (Nan Xing) (each 1 qian), Radix Chuanxiong (Chuan Xiong) (1 liang), Radix Genkwa (Yuan Hua - vinegar-fried until very dry/black).
Thirteen ingredients, chop coarsely, mix. Yuan Hua wrapped separately. Take 2.5 qian each time, 1.5 small cups water, 3 slices Sheng Jiang, 1 date, add a pinch of Yuan Hua, decoct to 80%, take anytime. Must vomit foreign matter first, then gradually reduce Yuan Hua. Because Yuan Hua opposes Gan Cao, more kills parasites, less removes chills/fever. This is the subtlety. (Formula differs from *Zong Yao*, should verify.)
*[Ben Cao Gang Mu]* Treat labor-abscess hematemesis damaging lung, and reckless blood flow, Shen Chuan Gao.
Use Jian Cao (Persicaria) 1 jin. Available in Wu and Tai Zhou, only Wu Zhou type usable. Looks like Qian Cao Gen, also like Xi Xin. Use 1 jin each time, clean wash, grind to powder, add 1 jin raw honey, mix into paste, store in vessel, do not touch iron. Nine steamings and nine exposures, once a day. Patient rises at wugeng, sits facing east, no talking. Use spoon to take medicine like porridge, 4 liang per dose. After a while, press with thin millet rice porridge. Medicine taken cold, porridge drink not too hot. Vomiting or purging is acceptable. For chronic lung damage hemoptysis, one dose cures. For ordinary cough/reckless blood, 1 liang per dose is sufficient.
A nobleman's fiefdom patient had tuberculosis. His elder often gave him this prescription. Medicine made in 9 days. Eve before, patient dreamed warning not to take medicine randomly next day. Next day, about to take, dirt fell from roof into vessel, could not take. Made again, about to take, cat covered vessel, could not take. Made again, not finished, person died. Medicine's anomaly is such. For minor reckless blood, one sip cures. Or say Lu Nongshi's wife's villager Ai Fuxian personally told this story. He later wrote *Da Guan Ben Cao*, included it in collection, but people didn't recognize it, refused to believe.
*[Wai Tai Mi Yao]* Treat cough reversal, spitting purulent blood, Ji Zi Tang.
Ji Zi (Egg, 1), Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gan Cao - fried, 2 fen), Radix Kansui (Gan Sui, 1 fen), Radix Rhei (Da Huang, 2 fen), Radix Scutellariae (Huang Qin, 2 fen).
Use 6 sheng water, boil to 2 sheng, remove dregs, add Ji Zi, stir well, drink all. Good. Avoid Hai Zao (Seaweed) and Song Cai (Chinese Cabbage).
[He Zhizheng/Zi He] Yang Liu Shi's man, 20+ years old, labor-cough hemoptysis, spitting sticky/foul saliva, unbearable proximity. Autumn/winter mild, spring/summer severe. Alternating chills/fever, afternoon onset, resembling malaria, night sweat like water. Repeatedly used Ma Huang Gen (Ephedra Root) and Bai Pu Shan (Old Mat Grass Fan) to stop sweat, sweat continued.
Also used Ning Shen San and Ning Fei San to stop cough, cough continued. Dai Ren (He Zhizheng) first used Du Sheng San to induce vomiting of phlegm. Phlegm like chicken yolk. Sweat flowed out with vomiting. Unconscious for 3 days, not regaining consciousness. Occasionally given cold water, spirit slightly opened, diet increased. Then given Ren Shen Ban Xia Wan and Gui Ling Gan Lu San. Recovered in not many days.
[Zhu Danxi] Lin Defang from Tai Zhou, 20+ years old, got cough with hemoptysis/fever, body gradually wasted. Many doctors treated with tonics for years, symptoms worsened. I diagnosed six pulses all choppy. I said: This is lustful and angry much, essence/blood depleted. Also because too many tonic/sealing medicines, Ying/Wei circulation blocked, stagnant blood accumulated internally, lung qi obstructed, cannot descend. Treating lung obstruction requires vomiting; depleting essence/blood requires tonification. Only Dao Cang (Organ Purging) has both, but make vomiting exceed purging. Also moxa Fei Shu (BL13) five times, then cured.
[Yun Qi Zi] Ji Su Wan treats deficiency-heat, unconsciousness/fatigue, lower deficiency/upper obstruction, coughing blood/epistaxis.
Folium Elshortziae (Ji Su Ye) (0.5 jin), Radix Astragali (Huang Qi) (1 liang), Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gan Cao), Radix Chuanxiong (Chuan Xiong) (each 0.5 liang), Ramulus Saposhnikoviae (Fang Feng) (1 liang), Radix Platycodi (Jie Geng) (0.5 liang), Herba Schizonepetae (Jing Jie) (2 liang), Flos Chrysanthemi Indici (Gan Ju) (3 qian), Radix Rehmanniae Recens (Sheng Di) (0.5 liang), Borneolum Syntheticum (Nao Zi) (0.5 qian).
Grind to fine powder, make pills with refined honey, size of bullet. Take one pill each time, chew with Mai Men Dong (heart removed) decoction. If lung damage hemoptysis, gradual weakness/emaciation, inability to walk, panting/cough/phlegm, or chills/fever, red/scanty urine, add Che Qian Zi (Plantago Seed) 2 qian, use Sang Zhi (Mulberry Twig) chopped/fried fragrant, decoct, chew with pill.
Floating-large pulse treat as deficiency, suitable for Shen/Qi formulas under deficiency section. If floating-large with severe upper obstruction, suitable for this Ji Su Wan. Deep-slippery-strong pulse treat as excess, suitable for formulas under excess section.
[Zhu Danxi] First phlegm-cough, then seeing red, mostly phlegm-accumulation-heat. Lowering phlegm-fire is urgent. Sputum with blood comes out, this is stomach heat steaming blood out. Severe case uses Shan Zhi (Gardenia), mild case uses Lan Shi (Isatis Seed). Jing Jie can disperse throat tube phlegm-blood.
Ke Xue Fang (Cough Blood Formula)
Radix Indigo Naturalis (Qing Dai), Fructus Trichosanthis (Gua Lou Shi), Fructus Terminaliae Chebulae (He Zi), Lapillus Calcitri (Hai Shi), Fructus Gardeniae (Shan Zhi).
Grind to powder, mix with Jiang Zhi (Ginger juice) and honey, hold in mouth and swallow. If cough severe, add Xing Ren (Apricot Seed). Later regulate with Ba Wu Tang (Eight Substance Decoction) modifications.
[Li Gao] Zheng Zhongben, age 23, due to heart pain, took Dan Fu (Realgar/Aconite) etc., got upper jiao qi rebellion, diaphragm disease, hypochondriac urgency, distension/discomfort, defecation caused coughing blood, body shape wasted, stool dry/difficult, pulse wiry-rapid, slight night heat, food slightly reduced.
