Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, five qian), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, three qian each), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix, half liang), Fu Ling (Poria, three qian), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, three fen).
Make into five doses, decoct in water and take orally.
Brother Lu's malaria relapsed after overexertion; his pulse was large, surging, and floating. This indicates blood injury; tonification is indicated.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, half qian), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, one qian), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, four qian), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, four qian), Bai Shao (White Peony Root, one qian), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, three qian), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Fu Ling (Poria), Gui Wei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix Tail, five fen each).
Make into one dose, drink hot. Also moxa the Dazhui (GV14) acupoint with five moxa cones.
A woman in her fifties had a solid constitution, liked labor, was impatient, favored strong flavors, and liked hot food. In summer, she suffered from aversion to cold and fever alternating ceaselessly. Even with thick clothes and quilts, she shivered constantly. Both pulses were choppy. I treated it as a mixed pathogenic factor syndrome. Thus, I used Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) plus Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), with Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) as sovereign drugs, Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Licorice Root) and Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex) as assistant drugs, added plenty of Jiang Zhi (Ginger Juice), and swallowed Tong Shen Wan (Thirty pills), Hui Jin Wan (Twenty pills), Yi Qing Wan (Twenty pills), and A Wei Wan (Ten pills). After taking three decocted doses, she slept. On the fifth dose, her body harmonized. On the seventh dose, she sweated slightly all over, and all symptoms disappeared.
[Ju Fang] Ren Shen Yang Wei Tang (Ginseng Stomach-Nourishing Decoction)
Cao Guo (Tsaoko Fructus), Fu Ling (Poria), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, de-gorged. Half liang each), Gan Cao (Honey-fried, seven qian), Ju Hong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, seven qian and half), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, de-barked, ginger-processed), Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, washed in decoction, fried), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber, washed in decoction. One liang each), Huo Xiang Ye (Agastaches Herba, washed to remove dirt).
The above are chopped. Take four qian per dose, add one and a half lamps of water, seven slices of ginger, one dark plum. Decoct until七分 remains, strain, and take hot. (If the pulse is weak and powerless or there is much cold, add Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) and Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata). If the pulse is surging and forceful with much heat, add Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix).)
The Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), and Huo Xiang Ye (Agastaches Herba) disperse. The Ban Xia (Pinelliae Tuber), Cao Guo (Tsaoko Fructus), Fu Ling (Poria), and Ju Hong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) seize phlegm. Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) is most suitable for deficient persons.
[Dan Xi] Jue Mie Qing Hao Wan (Artemisia Annua Pill for Curing Malaria)
Qing Hao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba), Dong Gua Pi (Benincasae Exocarpium), Guan Gui (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Ma Bian Cao (Verbenae Herba. Two liang each).
The above herbs are baked dry, ground into powder, and made into pills with paste, the size of black pepper. Divide one liang into four doses. Take all at once one hour before Xu time.
Formula for treating malaria. Bai Cao Shuang (Soot from Hundred Herbs), Huang Dan (Lead Monoxide) in equal parts. Fine grind. Take two qian bi per dose on the day of onset with empty stomach, mixed with water. If not cured, take two consecutive doses, then it heals.
Use garlic for treating malaria, any amount. Grind extremely smooth. Add a little Huang Dan (Lead Monoxide) to gather. Make into pills the size of a chicken head. Wait until dry. Take one pill per dose with fresh well water. Face east when taking for best effect.
[Yuan] Treating Malaria.
Da Suan (Garlic Bulb, one clove, sliced).
Take one slice, insert one piece of Ba Dou (Crotonis Semen) inside. Wrap lightly in paper and bake until cooked. Remove Ba Dou (Crotonis Semen). Grind with Huang Dan (Lead Monoxide) to make pills the size of a chicken head. Take one pill per dose. If chills occur first, use seven cun of peach branch facing east, decoct in water. On the day of onset, take at Wugeng (3-5 AM) facing north. If fever occurs, swallow with cold water. If not fully healed, take another dose at the next onset to eradicate the root.
The above Huang Dan (Lead Monoxide) seizing phlegm method is a mild agent.
[Yi Jian] Qi Bao Tang (Seven Treasures Decoction)
Chang Shan (Dichroae Radix), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Qing Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Bing Lang (Arecae Semen), Cao Guo (Tsaoko Fructus), Gan Cao (Honey-fried), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex. Equal parts).
The above are chopped. Take half liang per dose, one lamp of water and one lamp of wine. Decoct until six parts remain. Take on the morning of the day of onset. This formula contains Chang Shan (Dichroae Radix); vomiting must occur for cure. Or severe reaction occurs that day, commonly called "fighting medicine." Not suitable for weak persons or those with spleen-stomach cold.
The above seizing phlegm method is a heavy agent. Use cautiously in deficient persons, or after tonification.

Xin Shi (Arsenolite, vinegar-fried, two qian and half). Jin Bo (Gold Leaf, twenty-five pieces, as coating).
Grind all into powder. Knead with refined honey. Make twenty pills per liang. Coat with Wu Ming Yi (Haematitum). Take one or two pills per dose, grind with warm water. For daily onset, take before onset. For alternate-day onset, take on the night of non-onset. For multi-day interval onset, take on the night before.
[He Jing] Bi Xie Dan (Evil-Repelling Pill) Treating Lan Zhang Ghost Malaria, and daily/frequent onset.
Lv Dou (Mung Bean), Xiong Hei Dou (Male Black Soybean). Forty-nine grains each. Xin Shi (Arsenolite, half qian, grind separately). Huang Dan (Lead Monoxide, one qian). Zhu Sha (Cinnabaris, two qian).
Grind all into powder. Put in mortar together. Add drops of water to make pills. Divide into thirty pills. Take one pill per dose. Take seven heart-shaped pieces of peach wood from southeast direction, grind for juice. Mix with Jing Hua Shui (Well Water). Swallow facing the sun when it is about to rise but not yet risen in the morning.
The above Xin Shi (Arsenolite) and Pi (Arsenic) seizing phlegm is an extremely harsh agent. Deficient persons must absolutely avoid it.
Yun Qi (Luck/Climate) theory states there are two types of malaria:
One is Fire-Heat. The Classic says: When Year Fire is excessive, hot summers prevail, Metal-Lung receives evil, people suffer malaria with shortness of breath. It also says: Excessive Fire is called He Xi, its disease manifests as laughing malaria and madness. It also says: When Fire is depressed and erupts, people suffer warm malaria. It also says: When Shaoyang governs the sky, Fire excess wins, people suffer fever, aversion to cold, and malaria. It also says: Shaoyang recurrence leads to malaria. It also says: Shaoyang governance policy causes people to suffer cold-heat malaria. Treat with cold agents.
Two is Cold-Damp. The Classic says: When Yangming governs the sky, as the fourth qi, disease is malaria, this is the sign of cold.
[He Jing] Duan Mie Ru Sheng San (Stopping Malaria Like Sage Powder)
Pi (Arsenic, one qian). Zhi Zhu (Spider, large ones, three). Xiong Hei Dou (Male Black Soybean, forty-nine grains).
Grind all into powder. Add drops of water to make pills the size of a chicken head. If onset is tomorrow, offer sacrifice under Big Dipper tonight. Next morning wrap in paper, insert one pill into ear canal. Immediately heals like magic. One pill can save two people.
[Su Wen] Emperor said: The Classic says excess is drained, deficiency is tonified. Now heat is excess, cold is deficiency. But the cold of malaria patients cannot be warmed by soup or fire; when hot, ice and water cannot cool them. These belong to excess and deficiency categories. At this time, even skilled doctors cannot stop it; must wait for self-decline to needle. Why? Please explain. Qibo said: The Classic says do not needle intense heat, do not needle chaotic pulse, (Wang Bing notes: Chaotic means pulse without order.) do not needle dripping sweat, because the pathogen is rebellious, not treatable yet. When malaria starts, Yang Qi merges into Yin. At this time, Yang is deficient and Yin is abundant, exterior has no Qi, so chills occur first. When Yin Qi rebels to extreme, it returns to Yang. Yang and Yin merge again to exterior, so Yin is deficient and Yang is substantial, so fever and thirst occur first. Malaria Qi, merging into Yang makes Yang win, merging into Yin makes Yin win. Yin win brings cold, Yang win brings heat. Malaria wind-cold Qi is not constant; when disease peaks, it recurs. Disease onset is like fire heat, like wind and rain unstoppable. So Classic says: When peak, must destroy; when decline, matters prosper greatly. This is what it means. When malaria has not started, Yin has not merged into Yang, Yang has not merged into Yin. Regulate it then, True Qi rests, Evil Qi perishes. So doctors cannot treat already-onset disease, because Qi is rebellious. Emperor said: Good. How to attack? Early or late? Qibo said: When malaria is about to start, Yin and Yang Qi are about to shift, must start from four extremities. Yang injured, Yin follows. So bind firmly before onset to prevent Evil entering and Yin exiting. Observe carefully. Where Sun Luo (Collaterals) are full and hard with blood, take them. This is where Evil goes but hasn't merged yet. [Mall Theory] Generally treat malaria, start treatment about the time of one meal. If missed, lose timing. Malaria body just hot, needle dorsal artery, open aperture, bleed, heat stops immediately. Malaria just wanting cold, needle Hand Yangming Taiyin, Foot Yangming Taiyin. (Also say bleeding should follow Jing-Shu points.) Malaria pulse full-large-urgent, urgently needle Back-Shu points, use medium needle beside Five Shu points one each, adjust fat/thin to bleed. (Wang Bing notes: Back-Shu refers to Dazhu. Five Shu refers to Yixi. , sound quyu reverse.) Malaria pulse small-solid, urgently moxa Leg Shaoyin, needle Finger Jing. (Leg Shaoyin refers to Fuliou point, Finger Jing refers to Zhiyin point.) Malaria pulse slow-large-deficient, suitable to use medicine, not suitable to needle. All malaria where pulse not seen, needle ten fingers between bleed, blood gone must heal. First look at body red like small beans, take all. Needling malaria, first ask where disease started first, needle there first. First headache and heavy, first needle head top and two temples, two eyebrows between bleed. (Wang Bing notes: Head top refers to Shangxing, Baihui. Two temples refer to Xuanlu. Two eyebrows between refer to Cuanzhu etc.) First neck-back pain, first needle there. First waist-spine pain, first needle Zhong bleed. First arm-hand pain, first needle Hand Shaoyang Yangming ten fingers between. First leg-shank sour-pain, first needle Foot Yangming ten fingers between bleed. Wind Malaria, malaria onset sweating aversion to wind, needle Three Yang meridians Back-Shu blood. Sour-pain severe, press impossible, named Marrow Disease, use Zhen needle Jieguxia, bleed immediately heals. Body slight pain, needle Zhiyin, all Yin Jing points, no bleeding, alternate day one needle. Malaria not thirsty, alternate day onset, needle Foot Taiyang. Thirsty and alternate day onset, needle Foot Shaoyang. (Ling Shu Classic says: Malaria not thirsty, alternate day onset, needle Foot Yangming. Thirsty daily onset, needle Hand Yangming.) Warm Malaria no sweat, perform Fifty-Nine Needles. Foot Taiyang Malaria makes person waist pain head heavy, cold starts from back, first cold then heat, Ran, heat stops sweat out difficult to end, needle Zhong bleed. (Jinmen point Huangdi Zhonggao Tu Jing says: Weizhong governs it. Haizang: Qiang Huo plus Sheng Di Huang, Xiao Chai Hu Tang plus Gui Zhi Tang.) Foot Shaoyang Malaria makes person body loose, cold not severe, heat not severe, dislike seeing people, seeing people heart palpitations, heat more sweat out very much, needle Foot Shaoyang. (Xia point. Hai Xiao Chai Hu Tang.) Foot Yangming Malaria makes person first cold, Sa Xi Sa Xi, cold severe long then heat, heat gone sweat out, likes sun moon light fire air then comfortable, needle Foot Yangming dorsum. (Chongyang point.) Foot Taiyin Malaria makes person unhappy, likes deep sigh, not fond of eating, much cold-heat sweat out, disease arrives then good at vomiting, vomit then decline, then take it. (Wait disease decline then take Jing-Shu and Gongsun. Hai Xiao Jian Zhong Tang, Yi Gong San.) Foot Shaoyin Malaria makes person vomiting, much cold-heat, heat more cold less, wants close door window to stay, disease difficult to heal. (Hai Xiao Chai Hu Tang plus Ban Xia Tang. Yangming disease seeing Shaoyin middle is thief evil, thus difficult to heal.) Foot Jueyin Malaria makes person waist pain, lower abdomen full, urination difficult like strangury state, not strangury, frequent urge fear, Qi insufficient, abdomen depressed, needle Foot Jueyin. (Taichong point. Hai Si Wu plus Chai Hu, Ku Lian, Fu Zi Tang.) Lung Malaria makes person heart cold, cold severe heat, heat interval good at startling, like seeing things, needle Hand Taiyang Yangming. (Lieque, Hegu.) Heart Malaria makes person vexed heart, very want clear water, reverse cold more not very heat, needle Hand Shaoyin. (Shenmen.) Liver Malaria makes person color pale green, deep sigh, appearance like dead person, needle Foot Jueyin see blood. (Zhongfeng.) Spleen Malaria makes person cold, abdomen pain, heat then intestine鸣,鸣 then sweat out, needle Foot Taiyin. (Shangqiu.) Kidney Malaria makes person Sa Sa, waist-spine pain twisting, stool difficult, eyes blurred, hands feet cold, needle Taiyang Shaoyin. (Dazhang governs it.) Stomach Malaria makes person almost disease good hunger but cannot eat, eat then limb full abdomen big, needle Foot Yangming Taiyin horizontal vessel bleed. (Lidui, Jiexi, Sanli govern it.) Malaria cold-heat severe, cold-heat jue, take Hand Yangming. Malaria cold less heat more, take Foot Shaoyang. Malaria red eyes KTKT, heart pain, take Hand Yangming Shaoyang. Malaria waist-back pain, not thirsty, take Foot Taiyang. (All Needling Mall Chapter)
[Jia Yi Jing] Mai Malaria, Shenting and Baihui govern it. Malaria chills, heat盛 wild speech, Tianshu governs it. Malaria盛 heat, Lieque governs it.
