Eye pain is of two types: one refers to pain in the white part of the eye (Sclera), and the other refers to pain in the black part of the eye (Cornea/Pupil). Pain in the white part belongs to Yang, so it worsens during the day; applying bitter-cold eye drops is effective, as stated in the classics: "The red vessels in the white part follow the pattern of Yang." Pain in the black part belongs to Yin, so it worsens at night; applying bitter-cold drugs exacerbates it, as stated in the classics: "The pupil and black part follow the pattern of Yin."
[From *Jian Yao Ji Zhong Fang*] Bu Gan San (Liver-Nourishing Powder): Treats eye pain due to Liver Blood deficiency, continuous cold tears, tendon and vessel pain, and photophobia.
Formula: Xiakucao (Prunella Vulgaris) 5 qian, Xiangfuzi (Cyperi Rhizoma) 1 liang, ground together into powder. Take 1 qian each time, mixed with winter tea, taken at any time.
Regarding the above formula, Xiakucao (Prunella Vulgaris) is extremely effective for treating eye pain in the black part, especially when it worsens at night. If applying bitter-cold eye drops causes increased pain, this medicine is also extremely effective. This is because the black part connects to the root of the eye (Ocular Root), also known as the Eye System (Mu Xi), which belongs to the Jueyin Liver Meridian. Worsening at night and aggravation by bitter-cold points indicate that both night and cold are Yin in nature. Zhu Danxi said: Xiakucao (Prunella Vulgaris) has the function of nourishing the Jueyin blood vessels. It flowers in the third and fourth lunar months and withers when Yin energy begins to grow at the Summer Solstice, indicating it possesses pure Yang Qi. Therefore, it treats Jueyin eye pain miraculously by using Yang to treat Yin.
My teacher, Mr. Zhou, suffered from eye pain in the black part, extending to the brow bone, and swelling/pain on one side of the head, occurring at night. Using Huanglian Gao (Coptis Ointment) caused severe pain, and other medicines were ineffective. Moxibustion on Jueyin and Shaoyang acupoints stopped the pain, but it recurred after half a month. After repeated moxibustion for over a month, I used Xiakucao (Prunella Vulgaris) 2 liang, Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) 2 liang, and Gancao (Licorice Root) 4 qian, ground into fine powder. Each dose was 1.5 qian, taken with clear tea. The pain decreased by more than half, and he recovered fully in four to five days.
Another man, aged sixty, also had eye pain in the black part extending to the brow bone, worsening at night, and aggravated by bitter-cold drops, similar to the previous case, but with two white nebulae (corneal opacities) on the black part. Previous medicines were ineffective. He was treated with this medicine combined with Dongyuan's Xuanqi Tang, plus Siwu Decoction with Huanglian, and moxibustion on Jueyin and Shaoyang acupoints, leading to recovery.

Stir the paste frequently, re-spread and fumigate until the herbs are consumed. Take out, form into needle-head sized pills. Apply one pill to the eye; miraculous.
[Zhu Danxi] For all eye diseases, decoct Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) in human milk and apply.
[From *Yang Shi Jia Cang Fang*] Why does human milk have many benefits for the eyes? The Heart governs Blood, the Liver stores Blood; when the Liver receives Blood, vision is possible. Water entering the meridians forms Blood. It is said: ascending becomes milk, descending becomes menstruation. Thus, milk is Blood. Applying it to the eyes is certainly appropriate.
For eye pain. Xiao Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark), also called Xiao Baizi. Rub off the rough skin with coarse cloth, scrape off the soft yellow shavings, quickly squeeze into a ball the size of a chicken egg, bind with ramie thread, wrap in radish leaves, bind again, and roast in ash fire.
