According to Yunqi (Luck and Qi) theory, there are three types of eye redness:
First, wind assists fire, stagnating in the upper jiao. The Classics state: When Shaoyin governs the heaven's policy, during the second qi phase, yang qi spreads, wind prevails, cold qi arrives intermittently, and people suffer from blindness and eye redness due to qi stagnation in the upper jiao causing heat. It also states: When Shaoyang governs the heaven's policy, during the first qi phase, wind excess leads to flooding, the climate becomes very warm, the pathology is qi stagnation in the upper jiao, manifesting as eye redness.
Second, fire excess. The Classics state: Excessive fire is called Hexi. In the Hexi era, the disease is eye redness. It also states: When fire stagnates and erupts, people suffer from eye redness and heart heat. It also states: When Shaoyang governs the heaven's policy, during the third qi phase, intense heat arrives, causing eye redness. It also states: Shaoyang victory manifests as eye redness.
Third, dryness pathogen injuring the Liver. The Classics state: When Metal year is excessive, dryness qi prevails, and people suffer from eye redness. It also states: When Yangming governs the heaven, dryness qi descends, Liver qi rises in response, manifesting as hypochondriac pain and eye redness.
The *Neijing* describes four methods for moxibustion and acupuncture for white eye pain:
One: Select Foot-Taiyang. The Classics state: Eye pain with red vessels running from top to bottom indicates Taiyang disease; hence, select this channel.
Two: Select Foot-Yangming. The Classics state: Eye pain with red vessels running from bottom to top indicates Yangming disease; hence, select this channel.
Three: Select Foot-Shaoyang. The Classics state: Eye pain with red vessels running from outside to inside indicates Shaoyang disease. Also, diseases generated by Hand and Foot-Shaoyang channels all involve the outer canthus; hence, select this channel.
Four: Select Qiao Mai (Vessel Channels). The Classics state: Evil invading Foot-Yangqiao causes eye pain starting from the inner canthus; puncture half a cun below the lateral malleolus, left side punctured right, right side punctured left. It also states: Eye redness and pain starting from the inner canthus should be treated by selecting Yin-Qiao.
There are three methods for moxibustion and acupuncture for black eye (cornea) pain:
One: Select Foot-Taiyang. The Classics state: Foot-Taiyang has a branch entering the brain from the nape, directly connecting to the root of the eye, named Yanxi (Eye System). If head and eye hurt, select points between the two tendons in the nape.
Two: Select Foot-Jueyin. The Classics state: Foot-Jueyin Liver channel ascends to Hangsang, connecting to the Eye System; hence, select this channel.
Three: Select Shaoyin. The Classics state: The Luo-connecting vessel of Hand-Shaoyin, named Tongli, belongs to the Eye System; select one cun posterior to the wrist crease. Also, the Zheng (Regular) channels of Foot-Shaoyang and Yangming both connect to the Eye System, but the Classics do not specify treatment methods for them.
[Zihe]: I once suffered from eye redness, sometimes swelling, sometimes nebula, with unpredictable onset and remission. Upon arriving at the Xinxi Governor's office, I suffered from photophobia and foreign body sensation for over a hundred days, with unceasing pain and swelling. Suddenly, ophthalmologist Jiang Zhongan said: You should puncture from Shangxing to Baihui, rapidly using needles for 40-50 pricks. At Canzhu and Sizhukong acupoints, plus the eyebrow margin, twenty pricks, and inside the nostrils, stimulate bleeding using a straw stem like before, about two sheng total. The next day, mostly healed; within three days, recovered completely.
[Jie]: For eye pain where the eyeball feels like it will protrude, perform major bloodletting at the Baguan points between the ten fingers. (Bleeding must occur from the finger webs.)

[Zhang]: Sudden nebula formation in wind-eyes with pain: Tip of the proximal phalanx of the middle finger. (Moxibustion 3 cones, wheat-sized, left side moxa right, right side moxa left.)
[*Ji*]: Various opacities: Jingming, Sibai (1 fen below the eyeball), Taiyang, Baihui, Shangyang, Lidui, Guangming (bleed each.) Hegu, Zusanli, Mingmen, Ganshu, Guangming (moxibustion each.)
[*Cuoyao*]: Red, swollen, painful eyes: Yanggu (insert 1 fen, reduce method, moxibustion.) Zhiyin.
[*Jia Yi Jing*]: Inner canthus red and swollen, blurred vision, itching and pain, white nebula on the skin: Jingming governs. Blurred vision with red pain: Tianzhu governs. Eye pain with tearing, severe feeling of protrusion: Qian Gu governs. Eye pain: Xia Lian governs. White membrane covering the cornea causing blindness: Jie Xi governs. Eye pain with deviation of mouth, squinting and unclear vision: Sibai governs. Eye pain radiating to the collarbone, unilateral lower abdominal pain ("collarbone" alternatively "spine"), vomiting, convulsions, dim vision and drowsiness: Zhaohai governs. Reduce Left Yin-Qiao, select anterior to Left Foot-Shaoyin, puncture Yin-Qiao first, then Shaoyin, qi located above Henggu. White nebula in the eye: Ran Gu treats it. Unclear vision, chills, eye nebula, pupil invisible, bilateral flank pain, leg soreness and tendon contraction: Qiuxu governs. Red and yellow eyes: Quanliao governs. Dizziness with blindness, unilateral headache radiating to the outer canbus with tension: Hanyan governs. Eye pain preventing vision: Shangxing governs. First select Collarbone, then Tianyou, Fengchi. Eye pain and unclear vision: Yinjiao governs.
