Those whose age is the same and whose symptoms are identical are suffering from diseases caused by the Five Movements and Six Qi (Wu Yun Liu Qi, the theory of cyclical climatic influences). Diseases caused by the Five Movements and Six Qi have both regular patterns and variations, making them difficult to diagnose. Detailed explanations can be found in the "Category of Patterns Related to Movement and Qi"; here, we only compile those that follow the regular pattern without variation.
Li Qiu Er (Xuanwei, Southwest) | Qiu Fen Qi (Cangguo, West) | Li Dong Liu (Xinluo, Northwest)
Xia Zhi Jiu (Shangtian, South) | Zhaoyao Center | Dong Zhi Yi (Yezhe, North)
Li Xia Si (Yinluo, Southeast) | Chun Fen San (Cangmen, East) | Li Chun Ba (Tianliu, Northeast)
[From *Ling Shu*] Taiyi (The Great One, a metaphysical concept representing the central energy moving through the nine palaces) usually resides in the Yezhe Palace for forty-six days starting from the day of Winter Solstice. The next day, it resides in the Tianliu Palace for forty-six days; the next day, in the Cangmen Palace for forty-six days; the next day, in the Yinluo Palace for forty-five days; the next day, in the Tian Palace (i.e., Central Palace/Zhaoyao) for forty-six days; the next day, in the Xuanwei Palace for forty-six days; the next day, in the Cangguo Palace for forty-six days; the next day, in the Xinluo Palace for forty-five days; and the next day, it returns to the Yezhe Palace, marking the Winter Solstice again. The daily movement of Taiyi begins with its residence in the Yezhe Palace on the day of the Winter Solstice. Counting the days from one position to nine, it then returns to one. This cycle continues endlessly, ending and beginning anew. When Taiyi shifts its position, Heaven must respond with wind and rain. If the wind and rain are harmonious on that day, it is auspicious; the year will be bountiful, the people peaceful, and disease rare. If the wind and rain come too early, there will be excessive rain; if they come too late, there will be drought. If there is an anomaly when Taiyi is at the Winter Solstice position, the omen applies to the Ruler. If there is an anomaly when Taiyi is at the Spring Equinox position, the omen applies to the Chancellor. If there is an anomaly when Taiyi is at the Central Palace position, the omen applies to the Officials. If there is an anomaly when Taiyi is at the Autumn Equinox position, the omen applies to the Generals. If there is an anomaly when Taiyi is at the Summer Solstice position, the omen applies to the Common People. By "anomaly," it means that on the days Taiyi resides in the five palaces, fierce winds break trees and scatter sand and stones. One should predict status and rank based on the direction associated with each palace. Furthermore, observe where the wind comes from to make predictions: wind coming from the direction Taiyi resides is called Real Wind (Shi Feng), which promotes life and nourishes all things; wind coming from the opposite direction is called Empty/Virtual Wind (Xu Feng), which harms humans, causing destruction and injury. One must carefully monitor and avoid Virtual Wind. Thus, the Sages said: To avoid the path of empty evil is like avoiding arrows and stones; if one does so, evil cannot harm, which is what this refers to. Therefore, when Taiyi moves to stand in the Central Palace, it faces the Eight Winds to predict auspiciousness or inauspiciousness.
Wind coming from the South is named Da Ruo Feng (Great Weak Wind); when it injures humans, it internally settles in the Heart and externally affects the vessels, its qi being primarily Heat. Wind coming from the Southwest is named Mou Feng (Strategizing Wind); when it injures humans, it internally settles in the Spleen and externally affects the muscles, its qi being primarily Weakness. Wind coming from the West is named Gang Feng (Rigid Wind); when it injures humans, it internally settles in the Lungs and externally affects the skin, its qi being primarily Dryness. Wind coming from the Northwest is named Zhe Feng (Breaking Wind); when it injures humans, it internally settles in the Small Intestine and externally affects the Hand Taiyang vessel; if the vessel is severed, blood overflows; if blocked, it becomes knotted and obstructed, leading to sudden death. Wind coming from the North is named Da Gang Feng (Great Rigid Wind); when it injures humans, it internally settles in the Kidneys and externally affects the bones and the latissimus dorsi tendons of the shoulder and back, its qi being primarily Cold. Wind coming from the Northeast is named Xiong Feng (Auspicious/Ominous Wind - contextually Ominous); when it injures humans, it internally settles in the Large Intestine and externally affects the lower parts of the two flanks, armpits, and joints. Wind coming from the East is named Ying Er Feng (Infant Wind); when it injures humans, it internally settles in the Liver and externally affects the tendon connections, its qi being primarily Dampness in the body. Wind coming from the Southeast is named Ruo Feng (Weak Wind); when it injure humans, it internally settles in the Stomach and externally affects the muscles, its qi being primarily Heaviness. These eight winds can only cause disease when they come from the "Empty" directions (the directions opposite to the season's ruling energy). When three types of emptiness combine, sudden illness and abrupt death occur. With two realities and one emptiness, the disease manifests as damp-cold alternating with heat; if one violates the rainy and damp places, it leads to Wei Syndrome (flaccidity syndrome). Thus, the Sages avoided wind as they would avoid arrows and stones. If one has three emptinesses but is only partially struck by the evil wind, it results in collapse or hemiplegia. (*Ling Shu*, Chapter: Nine Palaces and Eight Winds*)
The days of the Central Palace refer to the four days of Li Chun (Start of Spring), Li Xia (Start of Summer), Li Qiu (Start of Autumn), and Li Dong (Start of Winter), belonging to the four corners (Si Wei), corresponding to the Earth of the Center. "Taiyi moves to stand in the Central Palace" should be interpreted as standing in the Five Palaces.
Yellow Emperor said: I wish to hear why, in a given year, everyone suffers from the same diseases, and what causes this? Master Shao Shi replied: This is observed according to the Eight Correct Seasons (Ba Zheng). Yellow Emperor asked: How is it observed? Master Shao Shi replied: To observe this, one must wait for the day of Winter Solstice, when Taiyi stands in the Yezhe Palace. Upon its arrival, Heaven must respond with wind and rain. Wind and rain coming from the South are Virtual Wind (Xu Feng), which are thieving winds that harm humans. If they arrive at midnight, all people are asleep and not affected, so the people suffer less disease that year. If they arrive during the day, people are lazy and lax, and all are struck by Virtual Wind, so many people fall ill. Virtual Evil enters and lodges in the bones but does not manifest externally. When Spring arrives, Yang Qi expands greatly, and the cou li (pores/skin texture) open. Coinciding with the day of Start of Spring, if wind comes from the West, the people are again struck by Virtual Wind. These two evils interact, causing the Jing Qi (Meridian Qi) to become knotted and intermittent. Therefore, anyone who encounters such wind and rain is said to encounter "Sui Lu" (Yearly Dew/Evil). Because the year's harmony prevails and there are few thieving winds, the people suffer little disease and few deaths. If the year has many thieving winds and evil qi, and cold and warmth are discordant, then the people will suffer much disease and die.
Yellow Emperor asked: Regarding Virtual Evil Wind, how severe is the damage to different statuses? How is it observed? Master Shao Shi answered: On the first day of the first lunar month (Zheng Yue Shuo Ri), Taiyi resides in the Tianliu Palace. If on that day there is northwest wind and no rain, many people will die. On the first day of the first lunar month, if north wind blows at dawn, predicting spring, many people will die. On the first day of the first lunar month, if north wind blows strongly at dawn, many people will be sick; three out of ten. On the first day of the first lunar month, if north wind blows at noon, predicting summer, many people will die. On the first day of the first lunar month, if north wind blows at dusk, predicting autumn, many people will die. If north wind blows all day, six out of ten will die of serious illness. On the first day of the first lunar month, if wind comes from the South, it is called the Land of Drought. If it comes from the West, it is called White Bones, indicating disaster for the state and many deaths. On the first day of the first lunar month, if wind comes from the East, overturning houses and scattering sand and stones, the state will face great disaster. On the first day of the first lunar month, if wind comes from the Southeast, there will be deaths in spring. On the first day of the first lunar month, if the weather is harmonious and warm without wind, grain prices will be low, and people will not be sick. If the weather is cold and windy, grain prices will be high, and people will be sickly. This is referred to as observing the wind of the year; even subtle wind can harm people. If there is no wind on the Chou day of the second month, people will suffer many heart and abdominal diseases. If it is not warm on the Xu day of the third month, people will suffer many cold-heat alternating diseases. If it is not hot on the Si day of the fourth month, people will suffer many jaundice diseases. If it is not cold on the Shen day of the tenth month, people will suffer many sudden deaths. All winds described here are capable of overturning houses, breaking trees, scattering sand and stones, raising body hair, and opening the cou li. (*Ling Shu*, Chapter: Discussion on Yearly Dew*)
