[Tang] In *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases), the entry for "Goose Mouth" states: When a newborn infant is born, there are white flakes in the mouth, covering the tongue like a goose's mouth; hence it is called "Goose Mouth." This condition arises from fetal heat, with the Heart and Spleen being the most affected. The heat steams upward to the mouth. Treatment involves wrapping thread around the finger, dipping it into well water (Jinghua Shui, water drawn from a well at dawn), and wiping the affected area. Before sleep, sprinkle Huangdan (Cinnabar, processed by fire) onto the tongue. (From *Ge Shi Fang*). If the white flakes on the tongue do not come off after using the above method, boil chestnut juice until thick, wrap cotton around the finger, and wipe. If chestnuts are unavailable in spring or summer, boil the bark of the chestnut tree, using it as one would use well water.
When an infant first leaves the womb, some have a "tongue-tie," where a membrane under the tongue resembles a pomegranate seed, connecting the underside of the tongue. This may later cause speech impediments and limited tongue movement. One can sever this connection with fingernails; slight bleeding is harmless. If bleeding does not stop, apply ash from burnt hair to the wound to stop it.
(See section on Heat in the Heart Master)
[Tian] For adults or children suffering from trismus (lockjaw) with inability to open the mouth and tight jaw muscles, if various medicines fail, take one qian of powder of Rhizoma Arisaematis (Tiannanxing) mixed with a small amount of Borneol (Naozi). Grind them evenly together. Dip a finger in fresh ginger juice, apply the medicine to the roots of the upper and lower molars on both sides, and the mouth will open immediately.
[Danxi] For newborns with trismus who cannot suckle milk, use Peripatus schlegelii (Chi Jiao Wu Gong), remove the legs, roast, and grind into powder. Mix with pig milk and administer 5 fen orally. After three or four doses, the condition cures.
*[Taiping Shenghui Fang]* A child develops trismus seven days after birth. Take a small amount of Calculus Bovis (Niuhuang), mix with Bamboo Sap (Zhuli), administer a quantity equivalent to one zi, and drip pig milk into the mouth.
Method for inducing sneezing in trismus: Grind Curcuma aromatica (Yujin), Veratrum nigrum (Lilu), and Melon Seed (Gua Di) into powder. Mix with water and insufflate into the nasal cavity.
(This refers to drooling from the corners of the mouth.)
[Su] Qingxin Daotan Wan (Clear Heart and Guide Out Phlegm Pill) treats flaccid tongue with drooling. (Formula seen in Adult Section. Has been used with excellent results.)
[Tang] Infants suffering from "Zhi Yi" (drooling accumulation on the chin) exhibit excessive saliva flowing out and accumulating on the chin. This is caused by coldness in the Spleen and Stomach leading to excess saliva. The fluid of the Spleen is saliva. Due to deficiency-cold in the Spleen and Stomach, the body fails to control the fluids, causing them to flow onto the chin. The treatment method should be to tonify the Spleen. (Note: *Huangdi Neijing* states that flaccid tongue and drooling belong to Heat. This may be Tang's biased view. Both are preserved here for reference.)
Zhang Huan's Wenpi Dan (Warm the Spleen Pill) is effective for treating Zhi Yi.
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride) (each half liang); Banxia Qu (Prepared Pinellia Fermented Paste), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos) (each one liang); Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum) (processed, half liang).
Grind the above into fine powder, make pills with rice paste the size of millet seeds. For a one-year-old infant, administer ten pills; for a two-year-old, twenty pills. Swallow with rice drink.
