If there is exterior excess with no sweat, high fever, and irritability, Sanhuang Shigao Tang (Three Yellows and Gypsum Decoction) should be used to clear heat and calm the spirit. If there is interior heat with red and scanty urine, Liangge San (Cooling the Diaphragm Powder) combined with Tianshui San (Heavenly Water Powder) should be used to clear heat and promote urination. If there is stomach excess with constipation and tidal fever, Da Chaihu Tang (Major Bupleurum Decoction) should be used for purging if there is a slight exterior syndrome, while the Three Chengqi Decoctions (San Chengqi Tangs) should be used if there is no exterior syndrome. Guiling Ganlu Yin, Baihu Tang, Da Chaihu Tang, and the Three Chengqi Decoctions have been detailed in *Shanghan Yaojue* (Essentials of Cold Damage). Liuyi San (Six-to-One Powder) and Liangge San are detailed in *Zabing Yaojue* (Essentials of Miscellaneous Diseases).
Fangfeng Tongsheng San
33. Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Saposhnikovia and Scutellaria Universal Rescue Powder) treats wind-heat pathogens constrained within the San Jiao (Triple Burner), affecting both the interior and exterior, leading to stagnation of Qi and Blood and obstruction of the collaterals. The formula consists of Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), plus Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Shigao (Gypsi Fibrosus), Huashi (Talcum), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), and Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica). For dysentery, reduce Mangxiao and Dahuang; for vomiting, add Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma); for spontaneous sweating, remove Mahuang and add Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus).
[Note] This formula treats all wind-fire pathogens constrained in the San Jiao, interior, exterior, and collaterals, preventing the free flow of Qi and Blood. It is suitable for initial colds with fever and headache, rashes transmitting through meridians, yellow spots, convulsions, irritability, thirst, insomnia, constipation, and difficult urination. Its efficacy is remarkable.
Chaige Jieji Tang

35. For extreme Yang toxicity causing rashes, spots, and vomiting, accompanied by irritability, thirst, groaning, delirium, and mania, or persistent high fever after purging despite soft stools, use Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Decoction for Resolving Toxicity), consisting of Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex). If there is interior excess with hard stools requiring purging, add Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) to create Zhizi Jinhua Tang (Gardenia Golden Flower Decoction). If there is exterior excess with no sweat requiring diaphoresis, add Shigao (Gypsi Fibrosus), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Danshichidou (Sojae Semen Praeparatum), and Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) to create Sanhuang Shigao Tang (Three Yellows and Gypsum Decoction). For dysentery, remove Shigao and add Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) to protect the interior.
[Note] For conditions such as extreme Yang toxicity, or persistent high fever with soft stools after purging, Huanglian Jiedu Tang is appropriate, comprising Huanglian, Huangqin, Huangbai, and Zhizi. For interior excess with hard stools requiring purging, adding Dahuang creates Zhizi Jinhua Tang. For exterior excess with no sweat requiring diaphoresis, adding Shigao, Mahuang, Danshichidou, and Congbai creates Sanhuang Shigao Tang. For dysentery, removing Shigao and adding Gegen avoids damaging interior Qi.
