Kaoyu Zhengyuan San (Regulate Qi and Resolve Stagnation Decoction)
6. The Zhengyuan San used generally for treating accumulations (Ji Ju, masses formed by stagnation of qi and blood) contains Poria (Fuling), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu), Tangerine Peel (Qingpi), Citrus Reticulata Peel (Chenpi), Medicated Leaven (Shenqu), Malt (Maiya), Corydalis Rhizome (Yanhusuo), Cyperus Rhizome (Xiangfu), Amomum Fruit (Sharen), Talcum (Haifen), Hawthorn Fruit (Shanzha), Licorice Root (Gancao), and Platycodon Root (Jiegeng). It resolves phlegm-fluids, food stagnation, and the binding knotting of qi and blood.
[Annotation] Five types of accumulations (Wu Ji) and six types of聚 (Liu Ju) are formed by the binding and knotting of phlegm-fluids, food stagnation, and qi and blood. Kaoyu Zhengyuan San is generally used to treat them. This formula consists of Poria (Fuling), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu), Tangerine Peel (Qingpi), Citrus Reticulata Peel (Chenpi), Medicated Leaven (Shenqu), Malt (Maiya), Corydalis Rhizome (Yanhusuo), Cyperus Rhizome (Xiangfu), Amomum Fruit (Sharen), Talcum (Haifen), Hawthorn Fruit (Shanzha), Licorice Root (Gancao), and Platycodon Root (Jiegeng). By strengthening the Spleen, promoting digestion, resolving phlegm and draining fluid retention, regulating qi and harmonizing blood, any accumulation will surely be cured.
Taonü San (Peach Bud Decoction)
7. When blood stasis remains in the abdomen without forming a solid mass, accompanied with sallow complexion, fever, abdominal distension and pain; when wind-cold invades during postpartum lochia discharge or menstruation, causing blood stasis to stagnate within the Blood Chamber (Xueshi). For postpartum lochia retention, Shixiao San (Laughing Out Powder) is indicated; for amenorrhea due to coagulated blood stasis, Yuzhu San (Jade Candle Decoction) is used to attack and resolve it. For blood gu (blood-related parasitic-like disease/mass), Taonü San combined with Rat Feces (Jiaoshufen), Corydalis Rhizome (Yanhusuo), Cinnamon Twig (Guixin), Amomum Fruit (Sharen), Cyperus Rhizome (Xiangfu), and Trogopterus Dung (Wulingzhi) is indicated.
[Annotation] During the postpartum period or menstruation, if a woman is injured by wind-cold, blood stasis must remain within the Blood Chamber. Since it has not yet formed a hard lump, it is not named Zhengjia (hard masses). The patient must present with a sallow complexion, distending and painful pain in the umbilical and abdominal region, internal heat, and afternoon tidal fever. If postpartum lochia does not flow smoothly, Shixiao San (Laughing Out Powder) is appropriate; if menstruation is closed and blocked due to coagulated blood stasis, Yuzhu San (Jade Candle Decoction) is appropriate. If blood stasis fails to move and accumulates over a long time, it will inevitably form Xuegu (Blood Gu). In this case, Taonü San (Peach Bud Decoction) should be used, which consists of Taonü (Dried Unripe Peach on the Tree), Jiaoshufen (Male Rat Feces), Corydalis Rhizome (Yanhusuo), Cinnamon Twig (Guixin), Amomum Fruit (Sharen), Peach Seed (Taoren), Cyperus Rhizome (Xiangfu), and Trogopterus Dung (Wulingzhi). Jiaoshufen is also known as Liangtoujian (Two-Ended Sharp), which is the feces of a male rat. Taonü refers to dried, unripe peaches that have not fallen from the peach tree.
*Shixiao San (Laughing Out Powder) formula is seen in the first volume under the section on Metrorrhagia and Metrostaxis.*
*Yuzhu San (Jade Candle Decoction) formula is seen in the first volume under the compiled formulas section.*
8. Pain in a tendon on either side of the umbilicus, protruding like a tight string, is a manifestation of Shan disease (Hernia/Colic). When located obliquely between the two hypochondria, it is called Pi (Sided Mass); when protruding high like a mountain, it is called Shan (Hernia). These conditions invariably cause pain radiating to the lower abdomen and lumbar/flank regions. All three syndromes are caused by wind-cold, appearing intermittently triggered by cold. Symptoms appear only when pain occurs and return to normal when pain subsides.
[Annotation] On both sides of the woman's umbilicus, tendons may protrude and cause pain. Large ones are as thick as an arm, small ones as thick as a finger, resembling a bowstring, named [specific type of] Shan/Pi. Located between the two hypochondria, it is named Pi (Sided Mass). If the lower abdomen pulls into the lumbar and flank regions, with pain and protrusion, it is called Shan (Hernia). Although the names differ in three ways, they are essentially all caused by wind-cold pathogenic factors lodging in the Uterus (Baozhong). Therefore, their attacks are always triggered by re-exposure to wind-cold. When attacking, there is pain and visible signs; when not painful, it returns to calmness as before.
