Its presentation involves alternating chills and fever with regular periodicity. This is due to pathogenic factors combining with the miasmic qi of mountain streams and valleys.
The *Qipo Fang* (Prescriptions of Qibo) essential formula for treating zhang-malaria:
Hengshan (Radix Daphnes, 3 liang), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 2 liang), Guangmingsha (Realgar, 1 liang).
Pulverize these three herbs and sift them. Mix with honey to form pills the size of a Chinese quince seed. Take three pills before the onset of the attack, two pills during the attack, and one pill after the attack. Administer another dose for the following three days. Observe dietary restrictions for three days.

The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* states: Jianri-malaria (Every-other-day Malaria) occurs when pathogenic factors and Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) circulate together through the Six Fu-organs but occasionally fall out of phase and fail to interact properly, causing pathogenic factors to press inward upon the Five Zang-organs.
