*Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases) states: For swelling caused by heat-toxin, there is no fixed location; it presents as sudden redness and swelling, accompanied by alternating chills and high fever, along with restlessness and discomfort.
*Jiyao Fang* (Essential Formulas) records a secret, non-transmitted formula for treating heat-toxin swelling:
*Cedillus Fructus Spinus* (Saponaria Spine) (one handful, remove both ends).
Take one *sheng* (approx. 200ml) of water, boil until half remains, filter out the dregs, and take in one dose. The goal is to induce diarrhea; the swelling will subside as rapidly as snow melting under hot water.
It also states: A formula for treating all types of heat-toxin swelling that suddenly appears on the neck, chest, or back and seals up without forming pus:
*Rehmanniae Radix Recens* (Fresh Rehmannia Root) (two *sheng*)
*Douchi* (Fermented Soybean Paste) (half *sheng*)
*Mangxiao* (Natrii Sulfas) (five *liang*).
Mash these ingredients thoroughly, apply as a poultice to the swollen area with a thickness of two *fen*, apply five to six times daily, until the swelling subsides.
*Jiuji Danyan Fang* (Emergency Single-Test Formulas) provides a formula for treating heat-toxin swelling:
Take soil from beneath the southeast root of a mulberry tree, mix with water to form a mud cake, place it on the swollen area, and moxa-burn it. Relief occurs immediately upon feeling the heat. This applies to both men and women.
*Guangji Fang* (Broad Salvation Formulas) provides a formula for treating heat-toxin swelling:
Burn the ribs of an ox to ash, mix with strong vinegar to form a paste, apply to the affected area, and replace when dry.
*Qipo Fang* (Formula of Qibo) provides a formula for treating human heat-swelling and pain:
*Shengma* (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (three *liang*)
*Yegan* (likely *Atractylodis Rhizoma* or similar aromatic herb, contextually treated as an aromatic) (two *liang*)
*Dahuang* (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (two *liang*)
*Mangxiao* (Natrii Sulfas) (two *liang*)
*Qingmuxiang* (Styrax) (one *liang*)
*Zhizi* (Gardeniae Fructus) (one *liang*)
*Gancao* (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (half *liang*).
Chop the seven herbs, boil in six *sheng* of water to obtain three *sheng* of liquid, add Mangxiao, stir until dissolved. Divide into three doses. Recovery occurs upon inducing diarrhea.
*Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* states: The manifestation of Qi-swelling disease resembles carbuncles (*yong*), characterized by hollow swelling without a head, unchanged skin color, tight painful skin, and immediate pain upon touch. This arises from wind-pathogen clashing with Qi.
*Duanju Fang* states: There is a condition called Qi-swelling disease, manifesting like a carbuncle, with hollow swelling without a head, unchanged skin color, tight painful skin, and immediate pain upon touch. This results from internal heat combined with exposure to wind, followed by sudden cold injury, causing Qi to condense into swelling.
One should take *Wuxiang Lianqiao Tang* (Five-Aromatic Forsythia Decoction), perform acupuncture with white needles to drain Qi, and apply *Jili Bo Gao* (Tribulus Poultice). Applying *Xiaodou Bo Gao* (Adzuki Bean Poultice) is also effective. (Current note: *Wuxiang Lianqiao Tang* can be found in the formulas for treating *Ehe* [malignant nodules].)
*Tribulus Poultice Formula*:
*Tribuli Fructus* (Tribulus Fruit) two *sheng*, sift finely, mix with sesame oil to form a paste, fry until scorched black. Apply onto fine, old, warm cloth, cut slightly larger than the swelling but without opening the center, and pad/apply it. If Tribulus is unavailable, crush adzuki beans, sift finely, mix with egg white, apply to the swelling, and reapply when dry. Both methods resolve the swelling. (*Jiyan Fang* agrees with this.)
