According to the *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases), Bianbing (a disease characterized by red, rope-like skin eruptions) is caused by overexertion leading to excessive heat in the limbs. Subsequently, exposure to wind-cold and suppression by cool-dampness allows pathogenic factors to enter the muscles, causing the sinews and vessels to knot and aggregate. The presentation includes red vascular prominences resembling woven ropes, accompanied by acute pain and high fever. When occurring on the feet, it typically starts from the dorsum pedis (Shupu) and extends to the ankle, appearing red like a woven rope, hence the name Bianbing; when occurring on the arms, it typically starts from the axilla and extends to the hand. If not treated promptly, after ulceration and pus discharge, tendon contraction may occur. If located on the foot and left untreated, it neither resolves nor ulcerates; as the heat subsides but qi stagnation persists, it transforms into a fistula (KT). A slow pulse with pathogenic invasion indicates that swelling has progressed to suppuration.
The *Duanju Fang* (Short Drama Formulas) provides a formula for treating fistula diseases:
It is appropriate to administer Loulu Tang (Cistanche Decoction). Externally, use a sharp needle multiple times to release blood and qi, puncture the area of nodules to drain pathogenic qi and blood, and apply a thin plaster of Vigna angularis (Adzuki Bean) to resolve the condition. These can also be managed according to the methods for treating Dan syndrome (erysipelas), or using the Sanwu Ganjiao Bo (Three-Ingredient Sweet Scorched Root Thin Plaster) used for treating carbuncles. Once ulcerated and suppurating, employ fire needles and apply ointment powders, following the same methods as for carbuncles.
The *Ge Shi Fang* (Ge's Formulas) provides a formula for sudden swelling of skin and flesh, accompanied by long red painful areas, named Bianbing:
Lu Jiao (Deer Horn, 1 liang) Bai Lian (Ampelopsis Radix, 1 liang) Mu Li (Ostrea Shell, 4 liang) Fu Zi (Prepared Aconite Root, 2 liang, processed)
Crush the above four ingredients, sieve them, mix with vinegar, apply to cloth, and patch. Replace when dry.
According to the *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun*, wind-pathogen toxic vapors reside in the muscles and accumulate at sites of deficiency, forming Luoli (scrofula/cervical lymphadenitis). The nodules may resemble plums, peaches, or dates in size, with two or three connected subcutaneously, accompanied by intermittent chills and fever. Over time, they transform into pus and ulcerate into fistulas.
The *Luyan Fang* (Verified Formulas) states: To treat Luoli, one must use a round needle for acupuncture. Small nodules will dissipate immediately; large ones will ripen, allowing pus to drain, after which recovery occurs. Acupuncture should be performed every other day.
The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) provides a formula for all cases of Luoli occurring on the neck and genital regions, where flesh knots condense resembling sores, carbuncles, or furuncles:
Use a single clove of garlic, cut off both ends, remove the core, shape it into an moxa cone base. Weigh the garlic to determine the size, place it on the nodule, and moxibustion. Do not break the skin; only ensure warmth. Perform seven moxa cones per application, replacing the garlic each time. Apply daily until resolved.
Another formula: Grind Bai Jiang Can (Bombyx Batryticatus, Silkworm) into powder. Administer 5 fen bi with water, three times daily. Recovery in ten days.
Another formula: Dry cat tongue ground into powder, applied topically to the sore.
Another formula: Ash from wild wolf feces, applied topically.
The *Yimen Fang* (Medical Gate Formulas) provides a formula for treating Luoli:
Puncture the Luoli nodule thoroughly with a sharp needle. Place a piece of Shi Liu Huang (Realgar/Orpiment, roughly bean-sized) into the needle hole. Heat the needle until red-hot and molten, allowing the medicine to flow into the wound. The sore heals and disappears. This method is highly effective.
The *Duanju Fang* provides a formula for treating Luoli and Yingqi (goiter) in thirty-year-olds:
Hai Zao (Sargassum Thallus, 1 jin) is placed in a silk bag and soaked in 2 dou of good clear wine for two nights during spring and summer. Take 2 he of the wine. After consumption, soak again in 2 dou of wine. Drink as before. Once the wine is finished, dry the Sargassum by roasting, grind into powder, and take 1 fang cun bi three times daily. There are no dietary restrictions. If one dose is ineffective, prepare up to three doses.
(Note: The *Ge Shi Fang* treats Luoli under the neck, numerous like plums and peaches, aiming for rapid resolution.)
The *Liu Juanzi Fang* provides a formula for cold-heat alternating Luoli in the neck and axilla, resembling plums in size:
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 4 fen) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, 4 fen) Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, 4 fen) Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger, 4 fen)
These four ingredients are equal in dosage. Grind, mix, and sieve. Take 1 fang cun bi before meals, three times daily. Children take half a fang cun bi. Another method uses wine for administration.
The *Fan Wang Fang* provides the Longgu San (Dragon Bone Powder) for Luoli with morning and evening fever:
Long Gu (Fossilized Mammoth Bone, 7 fen) Mu Li (Ostrea Shell, 3 fen; another version uses equal parts)
Grind these two ingredients, mix, and sieve. Take 5 fen bi before meals, three times daily.
The *Seng Shen Fang* (Monk Shen's Formulas) provides a formula for various Luoli accompanied by high fever due to sores:
Bai Lian Hui (Ash of Ampelopsis Radix, 2 sheng)
Mix this single ingredient with boiling water to form a porridge-like consistency. Apply hot compress to the affected area. Highly effective.
The *Guangli Fang* provides a formula for Luoli that have suppurred and formed perforations:
Lu Feng Fang (Vespa Nest, 2 pieces) is roasted and ground into powder. Mix with lard rendered in the twelfth lunar month and apply to the perforation.
