The *Qianjin Fang* records: This formula is indicated for deafness caused by fatigue, qi stagnation, wind pathogen, deficiency, and toxicity, as well as for long-term deafness accompanied by tinnitus.
Deafness due to fatigue (Lao Er) is caused by fire from overexertion disturbing the auditory orifice. Deafness due to qi (Qi Er) is caused by stagnation of meridian qi at the auditory orifice. Deafness due to wind (Feng Er) is caused by wind-heat closing the auditory orifice. Deafness due to deficiency (Xu Er) is caused by depletion of qi and blood leading to dysfunction of the spirit. Deafness due to toxicity (Du Er) is caused by obstruction of pus and blood hindering the auditory orifice. Long-term deafness (Jiu Er) is caused by pathogenic factors accumulating and obstructing due to a prolonged disease course. All cases of deafness inevitably involve tinnitus; therefore, they are collectively categorized under tinnitus.
Herbs with sweet flavor can tonify deficiency and eliminate fatigue. Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Yang Shen (Sheep Kidney), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus), Gan Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Tu Si Zi (Cuscutae Semen), Ba Ji Tian (Morindae Officinalis Radix), Rong Rong (Cistanches Herba), Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Fu Ling (Poria), and Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) are all sweet-flavored herbs capable of treating deficiency deafness and fatigue deafness.
Herbs with pungent flavor can dispel wind and regulate qi. Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Shi Chang Pu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix), Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), and Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis) are all pungent-flavored herbs capable of treating qi deafness and wind deafness.
Herbs with toxic properties can resolve toxic accumulations and treat chronic bi-syndrome. She Chuang Zi (Cnidii Fructus), Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), and Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) are all acrid-warm and slightly toxic herbs capable of treating toxicity deafness and long-term deafness.
Take 30 jin of iron filings, soak them in 7 dou of water for three days, then extract the juice. Add 7 dou of rice and yeast, and brew according to standard wine-making methods until ripe. Take 1 jin of Ci Shi (Magnetitum), grind it into powder, and soak it in the wine for three days. Then drink until intoxicated. Wrap the Ci Shi (Magnetitum) in cotton and insert it into the ear. Lie on your side, and upon waking from the drunken sleep, remove the Ci Shi (Magnetitum); the condition will be cured. Wu Kun states that Ci Shi (Magnetitum) attracting iron demonstrates mutual resonance between similar substances. Minerals and metals have cold natures, which can clear internal heat; they have heavy natures, which can anchor fearful qi. Brewing these together in wine aims to allow the medicinal power to reach everywhere; drinking the wine while inserting Ci Shi (Magnetitum) into the ear aims to create internal and external mutual resonance, thereby opening the auditory orifice.
