Gansui (Radix Kansui, wrapped in flour and roasted) Daji (Radix Euphorbiae Pekinensis, mixed with moisture and stir-fried) Yuanhua (Flos Genkwa, each half tael, stir-fried) Qingfen (Calomelas, one fen) Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, one tael)
Heiqiu (Fructus Cassiae Tora, two taels, take the first powder)
Grind the above medicines into fine powder, add drops of water to form pills, sized like small beans. Initially take five pills, increase by five pills per dose, swallow with warm water, three times a day, stop when bowel movement is unobstructed. If extreme chest fullness and oppression occur after taking the medicine, this is due to phlegm-fluid obstructing the orifices; the violent attack fails to open them, exacerbating pain and oppression. In this case, start with three pills initially, increase by two pills per dose, and stop once smooth bowel movement is achieved.
When phlegm-fluid generates various diseases, wind-heat stagnates and dries, causing limb numbness, wandering pain, phlegmatic cough, qi-blood stagnation, and inability to circulate freely, this formula is indicated for those who are robust and have strong healthy qi.
Gansui can reach places where phlegm-fluid hides; Daji and Yuanhua can drain fluid from the twelve meridians; Heiqiu is also a drug that expels fluid; Dahuang is an agent that pushes away accumulation. The addition of Qingfen is because it penetrates every orifice, expels wind-phlegm and accumulated heat, and mitigates the acrid and harsh nature of other drugs. This pill gathers highly toxic substances; if used skillfully, it can quell chaos and restore peace; if misused, it will deplete the true qi of weak individuals. Be cautious.
Narrative: When there is stubborn phlegm in the diaphragm, external pathogenic factors from improper seasons, and internal obstructed qi, asthma results. Methods such as warming, sweating, and vomiting are all good approaches. If one hesitates and merely regulates, it suits deficiency-type asthma; if the person is emaciated and qi-deficient, moxibustion on the back shu points is suitable. Now examining seven ancient formulas, but
Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae, remove joints, three qian) Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi, wash clean, two qian) Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, remove skin and tips, seven seeds) Gancao (Radix et Rhizoma Glycyrrhizae, one qian)
For asthma caused by original wind-phlegm in the lungs combined with cold-pathogen invasion of the back, this formula is indicated.
"Back" refers to the back shu points, which primarily transport the qi of the zang organs. Once invaded by wind-cold, the organ qi is closed by the cold-pathogen and cannot circulate outward, thus causing asthma. The acridity of Mahuang can open the couli and disperse cold; the warmth of Guizhi can resolve the muscle layer and vent the exterior; Xingren is slightly acrid, enters the lungs, and promotes qi flow; Gancao is sweet and neutral, harmonizes the middle jiao and aids dispersion.
