Pinellia Rhizoma (7 liang) Arisaema Cum Bile (3 liang) Rhizoma Typhonii (3 liang) Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (5 qian, skin and umbilicus removed)
Grind all into powder, soak in water for several days, then make pills.
For vertigo caused by damp-phlegm, this formula is the primary treatment.
The generation of phlegm stems from dampness; therefore, the drying properties of Pinellia Rhizoma and Arisaema Cum Bile are used. The stagnation of phlegm originates from cold; therefore, the warming properties of Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata and Rhizoma Typhonii are used.
Soaking for several days serves to neutralize their toxicity.
Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (albedo removed) Semen Pruni Armeniacae (skin and tip removed) Fructus Aurantii Immaturus (stir-fried with bran) Radix Scutellariae (wine-fried) Semen Trichosanthis (oil removed) Poria (1 liang each)
Make pills using ginger juice.
This is a general formula for treating phlegm-fire.
Unclear qi mechanism is due to phlegm; if phlegm is treated, qi will become clear. In this formula, Arisaema Cum Bile and Pinellia Rhizoma dry phlegm-dampness; Semen Pruni Armeniacae and Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae promote the flow of phlegm stagnation; Fructus Aurantii Immaturus attacks phlegm accumulation; Radix Scutellariae clears phlegm-heat; the function of Poria is to leach out phlegm-dampness; as for Semen Trichosanthis, it descends qi and promotes the flow of phlegm.
Pinellia Rhizoma Preparatum (2 liang) Poria (1 liang) Natrii Sulfas Exsiccatus (2.5 qian) Fructus Aurantii (5 qian)
Make pills using ginger paste.
For retained phlegm and hidden fluid at the Zhongwan (CV12) area, this formula is the primary treatment.
Pinellia Rhizoma dries dampness, Poria leaches dampness; when dampness is removed, fluid does not generate. Fructus Aurantii breaks down hardness, Natrii Sulfas Exsiccatus softens hardness; when hardness is removed, phlegm no longer adheres firmly.
Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (steamed with wine) Radix Scutellariae (rotten parts removed, 0.5 jin each) Lapides Micae Aureae (calcined with saltpeter until golden-yellow, 1 liang) Lignum Aquilariae Resinatum (5 qian)
Make pills together.
For stubborn phlegm with excess-heat, this formula is the primary treatment.
Radix et Rhizoma Rhei can push away stagnation, Radix Scutellariae can remove heat, Lignum Aquilariae Resinatum can descend qi, and Lapides Micae Aureae can drop phlegm-saliva. This formula is an attacking agent; it can only be used for patients with excess-heat. It is not suitable for those with deficiency-cold. Furthermore, Lapides Micae Aureae is calcined with saltpeter; it is best if aged for a long time. If newly calcined, the fire-toxin has not been eliminated, so it should not be taken.
Radix Kansui (heart removed) Radix Euphorbiae Pekinensis (skin removed) Semen Sinapis Albae (equal parts each)
For phlegm-saliva above and below the heart and diaphragm, causing pulling pain in the chest, back, hands, feet, neck, waist, and knees, cold numbness in hands and feet, and unsmooth qi and vessels, this formula is the primary treatment.
Radix Kansui reaches directly to where phlegm-saliva condenses; Radix Euphorbiae Pekinensis can attack phlegm-saliva in the chest and hypochondrium; Semen Sinapis Albae can dissipate fluid causing branch-pain. This is a fierce agent for attacking phlegm. It is also said: For fright-phlegm, add Cinnabaris; for pain, add Scorpio; for wine-phlegm, add Realgar and Scorpio; for masses formed by fright-qi, add Squama Manis, Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis, Radix Corydalis, and Rhizoma Curcumae Phaeocaulis; for arm pain, add Semen Strychni and Cortex Cinnamomi; for phlegm-heat, add Natrii Sulfas Crystallinus; for cold-phlegm, add Flos Caryophylli, Fructus Piperis Longi, and Cortex Cinnamomi. Add medicines according to the syndrome, just like deploying troops.
