[Point Hundred Ointment]
Rendong (Fructus Pruni Spinosae, remove skin and tip, 3 qian) Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae, 8 qian) Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis, cleaned, 2 liang) Dangguishen (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, root body) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis, each 6 qian).
Chop the aforementioned herbs finely, decoct together with five bowls of water. When the liquid reduces to half, strain off the dregs. Decoct again until the liquid is concentrated enough that a drop does not disperse when dropped. Add an equal amount of pure honey, and simmer for a short while. Use five to seven times daily. It is named "Point Hundred Ointment," intending to make the medicinal efficacy successive. Li Dongyuan recorded: Zhang Jishi suffered from eye nebula (cataract/opacity) for six years, which eventually obscured the pupil, causing visual disturbances resembling clouds and wind. He used this medicine and achieved efficacy. Analyzing these five herbs: Rendong can dissipate stagnant Qi; Dangguishen can invigorate stagnant blood; Fangfeng can dispel wind pathogenic factors; Huanglian can attack chronic heat; Gancao can harmonize Qi and Blood; and honey merely provides moistening.
[Bright Eye Washing Formula]
Guqingqian (Ancient Copper Coin, ten coins) Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis, 1 qian) Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, seven pieces, remove skin) Aiye (Folium Artemisiae Argyi, three slices).
Decoct the above herbs in one cup of water, reducing it by half. Let it settle clearly overnight. Wash the eyes frequently the next day for good results.
For those suffering from wind-heat, resulting in redness and ulceration of the eye sockets, wash with this formula.
Copper has a clear and austere nature, capable of overcoming heat and brightening the eyes. Huanglian is bitter and drying, capable of purging heat and firming the skin. Aiye is acrid and warm, capable of driving out wind and overcoming dampness. Xingren is acrid... [Text cuts off here]
[Benshi Sheep Liver Pill]
Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis, 1 liang) Baiyanggan (White Sheep Liver, one piece, boiled until soft).
Grind both together into pills, sized like wu-tou seeds (Fructus Cocculi). Take twenty pills per dose. Avoid pork and cold water.
The *Benshi Fang* states: This formula treats all eye diseases involving nebula, obstruction, and blindness (Qingmang).
Cui Chengyuan of the Tang Dynasty, while holding office, treated a death-row prisoner, saving his life. The prisoner later died of illness after several years. Cui Chengyuan was subsequently troubled by internal cataracts. After being blind for over a year, he sat alone sighing at midnight when he suddenly heard footsteps on the steps. Cui asked who it was. A slow voice replied, "I am the prisoner you once saved from death. Unable to repay you in life, I have come to present a prescription for eye disease." Having recited the aforementioned formula, he vanished. Cui prepared and took the medicine according to this method, and within a few months, his vision was restored. Kun (Wu Kun) states: The eyes are the orifices of the Liver. If Liver Wood becomes excessive, eye disease occurs; this is evil invading the empty orifices. Yue Ren (Bian Que) said: For excess conditions, purge the son organ. Therefore, use Huanglian to purge Heart Fire. By purging the Heart, the son (Heart) draws Qi from the mother (Liver), making the Liver no longer excessive. Would not the eyes then become clear and bright? However, the reason for combining sheep liver is to take advantage of its nature as a substance of blood and Qi, where similar things follow each other. Using it to tonify the Liver is unlike the nature of herbal medicines, which tend to be biased in one aspect and lose the balanced harmony (Chonghe).
