Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 1.5 qian) Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Sharen (Amomi Fructus), Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix, stir-fried), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, stir-fried).
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, 1 qian each), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 0.5 qian each).
Indicated for macules or rashes resulting from heat accumulation due to both internal injury and external contraction. This formula is the primary treatment for such conditions.
Internal injury leads to interior heat, while external contraction leads to exterior heat. If neither heat can be vented, it results in macular eruptions. For cases caused by external factors affecting the interior, one must regulate the Middle Jiao; Cangzhu, Chenpi, Sharen, Huoxiang, Banxia, Shaoyao, Zhike, and Jiegeng are all herbs that regulate the Middle Jiao. For cases caused by external pathogens, one must disperse the exterior; Mahuang, Guizhi, Qianghuo, Chuanxiong, Baizhi, and Gancao are all herbs that disperse the exterior. By treating both the exterior and the interior, the macules will heal spontaneously.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Huangqi (Astragali Radix, honey-fried), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix, wine-stir-fried), Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, processed), Heifuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata).
Indicated for macules arising on the skin surface due to rootless fire losing its control because of deficiency of Middle Qi. This formula is the primary treatment for such conditions.
This syndrome occurs after treatments involving sweating, vomiting, or purging. When Middle Qi is deficient and lacking, residual pathogenic factors have no place to attach, appearing faintly on the skin surface with a pale red color that is not very prominent, which serves as a distinguishing feature. Renshen and Huangqi tonify the Middle; Banxia and Gancao harmonize the Middle; these are all Spleen-strengthening herbs. Additionally, Danggui and Shaoyao invigorate blood circulation, ensuring that extravasated macules flow smoothly without stagnation. Guixin and Fuzi warm the Middle, guiding the displaced fire back to its origin. This is like raising the banner of the central camp so that scattered troops return to their ranks. Using Fuzi, Guizhi, Renshen, and Huangqi to treat macules represents a variation in therapeutic method. A physician who has not reached the level of flexible adaptation cannot discuss this approach.
Preface: The principles of malaria are difficult to articulate fully. Only by understanding the Five Movements and Six Qi, and the fourteen meridians, can one roughly comprehend its manifestations. Only by comprehending the principles of the advance and retreat, waxing and waning of Yin and Yang, can one appreciate the subtleties of malaria's progression. Unless one meticulously studies this discipline, knowledge remains superficial; when questioned, one would merely stand idle and smile helplessly. Herein, eighteen famous formulas are examined, with explanations of syndromes and medication, serving as an introductory guide for beginners.
