Po Gu Zhi (Cibotii Rhizoma) ten liang (steamed with wine and ground into powder), Hu Tao Rou (Semen Juglandis) twenty liang (skin removed, pounded until soft).
Mixed with honey to a consistency like maltose syrup; take one large spoonful with wine every morning. For those who cannot drink alcohol, mix with hot water. Avoid eating You Cai (Brassica rapa var. parachinensis) and mutton.
Adding Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex) one jin and Sheng Jiang fried garlic four liang to this formula creates Qing E Wan (Green Young Pill). Adding Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex), Hu Lu Ba (Trigonellae Semen), Xiao Hui Xiang (Foeniculi Fructus), and Bi Xie (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma) to this formula creates He Qi Wan (Drinking Up Pill).
Asthma and cough arise from phlegm rising with qi; lower back and leg pain arises from the kidney's failure to grasp qi. The two ingredients in this formula warm the kidney and grasp qi, thereby naturally calming asthma and cough and strengthening the lower back and legs. Both Qing E Wan and He Qi Wan have their own significance.
Dong Qing Zi (i.e., Nv Zhen Zi / Ligustri Lucidi Fructus). Harvested on the Winter Solstice, quantity not limited, dried in shade, steamed with honey and wine, left for one night, coarse skin rubbed off, dried and ground into powder. Han Lian Cao (Ecliptae Herba). Harvested on the Summer Solstice, quantity not limited, juiced and boiled into paste, mixed with the previous medicine to form pills.
Take with wine before retiring. Another method adds Sang Shen Zi (Mori Fructus) to form pills, or boils into paste and mixes in.
Er Zhi Wan (Two Solstices Pill) has excellent naming intent, but its efficacy is considered somewhat shallow. Adding Tian Dong (Asparagi Radix), Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), and Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), combining San Cai Tang (Three Powers Decoction) with Er Zhi Wan, makes it more effective.
Nen Sang Ye (Young Mori Folium) (stalks removed, washed, dried) one jin (ground into powder). Ju Sheng Zi (i.e., Hei Zhi Ma / Sesami Nigris Semen) four liang.
Crush the sesame seeds, boil to extract juice, refine with honey until it forms beads when dropped in water, add Sang Ye powder to form pills.
This is what is commonly known as Sang Ma Wan (Mulberry and Hemp Pill). It dispels wind and brightens the eyes, darkens beard and hair, and is quite effective. However, claims that it preserves youth and prolongs life are excessive praise and factually inaccurate.
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (soil-fried), Fu Ling (Poria), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (fried), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) each two jin. Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Bian Dou (Vigna Semen) (fried) one jin half. Yi Ren (Coicis Semen) (fried) one jin. Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus) one jin. Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) one jin. Lian Rou (Nelumbinis Plumula) (fried, heart removed) one jin.
Ground into powder. Take three qian each time, mixed with date soup or rice water.
This is the orthodox medicine for invigorating the spleen and harmonizing the stomach. However, Bian Dou (Vigna Semen) has inferior properties and should be reduced or omitted. I have seen cases where malaria recurred after taking Bian Dou following recovery, which indicates this.
