The formula is seen in the preceding text. The treatment method is the same as above.
Take the ingredients of Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction), grind them into powder, and mix with refined honey to form pills the size of a bullet. Take one pill each time, dissolved in ginger soup.
Treats all abdominal pain, cold limbs with reversal (cold extremities), spontaneous sweating, and faint pulse caused by cold invading the Three Yin meridians. Salt (four liang), wheat bran (two sheng), scallion white (twenty stalks, finely cut). Place the above three items in one cup of water, mix well, and stir-fry together in a pan twice until extremely hot. Wrap in cloth and apply hot compresses to the navel. Replace with another bag when it cools; if it becomes too cold, add water and re-fry. Use according to the previous method.
Shu (Summerheat) is the governing qi of summer. The fire-heat qi circulates between heaven and earth. At this time, if people are cautious and do not exert themselves recklessly, keeping their essence and qi internally secure and diet harmonious, then the pathogenic factor of summerheat-heat cannot harm them naturally. However, for those who work hard, laboring under the midday sun, traveling far while hungry, causing deficiency inside, the summerheat-heat pathogen enters through the deficiency. This results in Zhongre Bing (Heatstroke/Heat illness), also known as Zhongshu (Midsummer Heat). Its symptoms include headache, restlessness, dryness, heat, great thirst with desire to drink. This is a "obtained from movement" excess-heat disease. Treatment should employ clearing and resolving methods. If, on the other hand, idle persons seek coolness in deep halls or large buildings, allowing yin-cold qi to stagnate internally without dispersing, this results in Zhongshu Han Bing (Cold-type Summerheat illness). Its symptoms include aversion to cold, stiffness and tension, painful joints, fever, and absence of sweating. This is a "obtained from stillness" exterior-deficiency cold syndrome. Treatment should employ dispersing methods. There is also heat damaging Yuanqi (Primal Qi), causing fatigue in the four limbs, shortness of spirit, reluctance to speak, feeling of heat, vexation, poor appetite, and spontaneous sweating. This is a disease of summerheat damaging Yuanqi. Treatment should employ tonifying and nourishing methods. Generally, Shu Bing (Summerheat diseases) are divided into three types: Mao (Encounter), Shang (Injure), and Zhong (Strike); their treatments differ. In clinical practice, one must distinguish severity and seek appropriate treatment.
Regarding Shu as a pathogen, there are Shangshu (Summerheat Injuring), Zhongshu (Midsummer Heat), and Maoshu (Summerheat Encountering). Maoshu affects the Stomach and Large Intestine; its symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and watery diarrhea. Shangshu involves heat injuring the muscles; its symptoms include body heat, headache, greasy face, restlessness, sensation of prickles on the skin, dry mouth, and thirst. Zhongshu involves heat injuring Lung Metal; its symptoms include alternating chills and fever, spontaneous sweating, cough, flaccidity and weakness of the four limbs, and five-palm heat. Although the syndromes are three, the heat pathogen is one. Additionally, sudden collapse and loss of consciousness in summer, with cold extremities, is named Shufeng (Summerwind). This occurs because Ministerial Fire moves, phlegm-fluid obstructs the Heart orifices, leading to loss of sensation in the limbs and sudden collapse.
