Treats food stagnation and fluid retention, presenting with abdominal pain and diarrhea, chest and epigastric fullness and distension, vomiting of sour fluid, aversion to food due to stagnation, malaria or dysentery caused by dietary injury (due to dietary damage, the Spleen fails to transform and transport, leading to stagnation in the intestines).
Li Dongyuan's theory on digestion states:
Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus, 3 liang, pips removed; some say the pips are also effective), Shenqu (Fermented Wheat Mass, stir-fried), Fuling (Poria), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 1 liang), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Laifuzi (Raphani Semen, slightly stir-fried).
These are herbs for the Foot-Taiyin (Spleen) and Foot-Yangming (Stomach) meridians. Shanzha has a sour-warm nature with astringent properties, capable of digesting fatty and fishy foods (the astringency aids digestion); Shenqu is a pungent-warm fermented product, capable of resolving stagnation from wine, food, and stale residues; Laifuzi is pungent-sweet, directs Qi downward and controls wheat-based food stagnation; Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus) is salty-warm, digests grain accumulation and softens hardness (such as firm accumulations and phlegm); Food injury invariably involves dampness, so Fuling tonifies the Spleen and leaches out dampness; Stagnation over time inevitably turns into heat, so Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus) dissipates nodules and clears heat; Banxia can warm and dry, harmonizing the Stomach and strengthening the Spleen; Chenpi can descend and ascend, regulating the Middle Jiao and promoting Qi movement; This describes internal injury where Qi has not yet severely malfunctioned; one should only employ resolution and guidance methods, without need for tonification.
Da'an Wan (Great Peace Pill):
To this formula, add Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) and Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), remove Banxia, Laifuzi, and Lianqiao, and form pills using steamed dough paste. It is named Xiao Baohe Wan (Minor Harmonize the Stomach Pill): assists the Spleen in accepting food. If two liang of Baizhu are added to this formula, it is named Da'an Wan; or if Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) is added: treats indigestion due to Qi deficiency and mild pathogenic factors. If Baizhu, Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex)... are added...
Treats Spleen deficiency and Qi weakness, resulting in indigestion.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, soil-stir-fried, 2 liang), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus, stir-fried, 2 liang), Shanzha (Crataegi Fructus, pips removed, 1.5 liang), Zhishi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, 3 liang).
These are herbs for the Foot-Taiyin (Spleen) and Foot-Yangming (Stomach) meridians. The Spleen and Stomach are the officials responsible for the granaries. If the Stomach is deficient, it cannot receive and contain food, hence there is lack of appetite; if the Spleen is deficient, it cannot transform and transport... meat... transforms into痞 (Pi syndrome/accumulation)... resolution and guidance...
If Shanzha and Maiya are removed from this formula, and Fuling (Poria) and Zhi Gancao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) are added, it is named Yiqi Jianpi Wan (Qi-Boosting Spleen-Strengthening Pill): treats Spleen deficiency with poor appetite. If Shanzha, Maiya, and Chenpi... blood fills... Shaoyao... Maiya are removed, and Shenqu, Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), and Xiangfu are added, forming pills with Shenqu paste, it is named Shuyu Jianpi Wan (Soothing Depression Spleen-Strengthening Pill): treats Spleen Qi stagnation with indigestion. If Shanzha and Maiya are removed, and Banxia, Danningxing (Arisaematis Cum Bile), Ge Fen (Concha Meretricis), and Fuling are added, forming pills with Shenqu paste, it is named Huatan Jianpi Wan (Phlegm-Resolving Spleen-Strengthening Pill): treats internal injury complicated by phlegm. If Renshen, Shanzha, and Maiya are removed, and Banxia, Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Huanglian are added, forming water pills, it is named Qinghuo Jianpi Wan (Fire-Clearing Spleen-Strengthening Pill): treats Spleen deficiency with fire. If Renshen, Shanzha, and Maiya are removed, and Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Binglang (Arecae Semen), Houpo, Banxia, and Gancao are added, it is named Hezhong Jianpi Wan (Middle-Harmonizing Spleen-Strengthening Pill): treats Stomach deficiency with hunger but no desire to eat. Adding Renshen makes it Miaoying Wan (Miraculous Efficacy Pill): treats Stomach deficiency inability to eat, where organs may be obstructed or loose. If Shanzha is removed from this formula, and Banxia, Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Muxiang, Sharen (Amomi Fructus), Cao Kou (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Zhi Gancao, Fuling, Zhuling (Polyporus), and Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma) are added, forming pills with steamed dough, it is named Kuanzhong Jinshi Wan (Broad-Middle Appetite-Advancing Pill, by Li Dongyuan): tonifies the Spleen and Stomach, advances diet.
