[Taiwu Shenshu San] Cangzhu (Cyperus Rhizoma) soaked in rice water, 1 qian; Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) stir-fried with ginger juice, 1 qian; Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) with the white pith removed, 2 qian; Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) roasted; Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba); Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), each 1.5 qian. It treats contraction of mountain miasma and damp-evil, aversion to cold with high fever, generalized body pain, swelling of the head and face, as well as malarial toxins and seasonal toxic pathogens. (Damp-heat seasonal toxins enter through the mouth and nose, transmitting to the Yangming channel. When pathogenic factors contend with healthy qi, yin excess causes aversion to cold, while yang excess causes high fever. When the pathogen flows into the hundred joints, it causes generalized body pain; when it ascends to the head and face, it causes swelling, known as "Big Head Plague" (Datou Wen). Cangzhu is pungent and strong, raising yang, dispelling evil, drying dampness, and resolving stagnation; Houpo is bitter and warm, eliminating dampness and distension, transforming food and widening the intestines; Chenpi regulates qi and unblocks the Triple Burner; Gancao harmonizes the middle and supports the spleen earth. This formula is essentially Pingwei San, but with Chenpi used heavily as the sovereign herb. The human body relies primarily on Stomach Qi; when Stomach Qi is robust, external pathogens cannot invade. Therefore, treating external pathogens must prioritize strengthening the Stomach. Adding Huoxiang and Shichangpu utilizes their pungent-aromatic properties to open orifices, also dispelling evil and benefiting the Stomach. Wu Hegao stated: Taiwu's formula mainly regulates the Spleen and Stomach, yet its miraculous effect in resolving miasma lies within, truly deserving the title of Danxi's teacher.)
[Xushi Xueshi Shenshu San] Cangzhu 2 liang, Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Ben (Ligustici Rhizoma - likely referring to Gaoben), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), roasted Gancao 1 liang. Take 4 qian per dose, decoct with fresh ginger and scallion white.
For Wind-Cold injury with expected sweating, (after using pungent herbs like Qianghuo, Chuanxiong, etc., observe the middle jiao condition).
Xushi Xueshi Shenshu San: Cangzhu 1 jin, Zhima (Sesami Semen) 5 qian (ground into paste), Jujubae Fructus 50 pieces (extract flesh and pound into pills). It treats fluid retention forming "nest-like cysts" (accumulations of fluid and phlegm forming pocket-like structures; only the pungent, strong nature of Cangzhu can break them; adding Zhima moistens the dryness; using Jujube flesh tonifies Earth to control Water).
Maoshan Cangzhu, steamed and sun-dried nine times, ground into powder. It treats abdominal pain caused by Phlegm-Fluid retention.
(From *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*)
Treats early-stage Shanghan (Cold Damage) presenting with headache, body heat, and a surging pulse. It should be taken immediately.
Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) one handful, Douchi (Sojae Seminis Preparatum) one sheng. Decoct and take orally to induce sweating. If there is no sweating, add Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) 3 liang (Same as Cui Shi's formula).
This belongs to the Foot-Taiyang bladder channel medications. Congbai unblocks Yang and induces sweating (scallions are hollow, associated with the Lung vegetable, dispersing pathogenic factors from the Hand-Taiyin Lung and Hand-Yangming Large Intestine channels); Douchi rises and disperses to induce sweating, thereby expelling exterior pathogens.
If this formula omits Douchi and adds Shengjiang (Zingiberis Recens Rhizoma), it is named Lianxu Congbai Tang (from *Leizheng Huoren Shu*: indications are the same).
