Treats convulsions (spasms and flaccidity) caused by wind deficiency, unconsciousness, or alternating chills and fever. (Spasms are called *chi* (瘛), flaccidity is called *zong* (疭), and continuous extension and flexion is called *chi zong* (瘛疭), which resembles the bending and straightening of wood. When Liver Qi is deficient and Wind pathogen takes advantage, entering the blood vessels causes spasms; if in the skin, it manifests as chills and fever; if the pathogen transfers to the organ it generates, it leads to mental confusion and loss of consciousness.)
Du Huo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), Qiang Huo (Rhizoma Notopterygii), Fang Feng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Xi Xin (Herba Asari), Gui Xin (Cortex Cinnamomi), Bai Wei (Radix Cynanchi Atrati), Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Xiong Duan (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Ban Xia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), Yuan Zhi (Radix Polygalae), Chang Pu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii) (each 5 qian), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried, 2.5 qian). Take 1 liang per dose, decoct with Sheng Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) and Da Zao (Fructus Jujubae).
This prescription acts on the Hand Shaoyin Heart Meridian and Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. The Liver belongs to Wind-Wood and governs the sinews; thus, spasms are a manifestation of Liver pathogen. The Liver desires dispersion, so pungent foods/drugs should be eaten urgently to disperse it. Qiang Huo and Du Huo dispel Wind, Xi Xin and Gui Xin warm the meridians, Ban Xia eliminates phlegm, Xiong Duan and Dang Gui disperse Wind with pungency and gently warm the blood; when blood flows, Wind disperses. Using pungency to disperse is equivalent to using pungency to tonify (Wood likes free flow, so dispersion is considered tonification); the Heart is the child of the Liver; if Liver Heat transfers to the Heart, it causes mental confusion, so Ren Shen tonifies Heart Qi, and Chang Pu opens the Heart orifices. Fu Shen and Yuan Zhi calm the Spirit, Bai Wei clears heat with salty-cold properties and treats cold limbs; this makes Wind still and Fire subside, blood circulate, and Spirit reside, thereby stopping spasms naturally.
Treats hemiplegia causing numbness in hands and feet that persists for a long time, where damp-phlegm and dead blood stagnate in the collaterals, causing sudden pain in one or two spots in the legs and arms.
Chuan Wu (Radix Aconiti Kusnezoffii, processed, remove umbilicus and skin), Cao Wu (Radix Aconiti Karakolicum, processed, remove skin), Dan Xing (Sclerotium Bile-processed Arisaematis), Di Long (Pheretima, washed, dried by baking), Ru Xiang (Resina Frankincense)...
This prescription acts on the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian and Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. Wu Hegao said: Dan Xing is pungent and fierce, used to dry damp-phlegm; Chuan Wu and Cao Wu are pungent and hot, used to scatter cold-damp; Di Long is born in damp earth, intended to guide Chuan Wu and Dan Xing directly to the site where damp-phlegm condenses, as stated in the *I Ching*: "like energies seek each other" (Di Long is salty-cold, clears heat and promotes urination); Wind pathogen pours into joints and limbs, and over time blood vessels coagulate and circulation stops, so Ru Xiang and Mo Yao are used to eliminate blood stasis (Ru Xiang invigorates blood, dispels Wind and extends sinews, Mo Yao...)
