Treats Kidney Xiao (Kidney Wasting-Thirst), characterized by the gradual thinning of both legs and weakness in the waist and feet (This occurs because after Zhong Xiao [Middle Wasting-Thirst], Stomach heat transmits to the Kidney, consuming and scorching the Kidney's essence/lipids, causing the Kidney to become dry and withered, thus leading to this disease. Note: Kidney Xiao is also known as Xia Xiao [Lower Wasting-Thirst], which is a progression from Shang Xiao [Upper Wasting-Thirst] and Zhong Xiao [Middle Wasting-Thirst]. It presents with drinking much and urinating much, with urine resembling paste or oil. Wang Bing's commentary states: The Lung governs Qi. When the Lung is healthy, Qi can control and manage body fluids; the refined essence nourishes sinews, bones, vessels, and blood, while the remainder becomes urine. When the Lung is diseased, body fluids lose Qi's control, and even the refined essence flows down with the urine).
Fuling (Poria), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Bibi (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma), Shudihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata), Fupenzi (Rubiae Fructus), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) (each 1 liang); Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis), Chuangzi (Cnidii Fructus) (each 7 qian 5 fen).
These are herbs for the Foot Shaoyin [Kidney] channel. Fuling descends Heart Fire and facilitates communication between the Heart and Kidney; Huanglian clears Spleen heat and drains Heart Fire; Shihe levels Stomach heat and astringes the Kidney (it can strengthen sinews and bones, treating wind-bi and leg weakness); Shudihuang and Xuanshen generate Kidney Water; Fupenzi and Chuangzi consolidate Kidney Essence; Renshen tonifies Qi; Huafen generates fluids; Bibi clears heat and promotes dampness drainage; Bibi acts like the spleen of a chicken, capable of digesting water and grain, unblocking the Small Intestine and Bladder to stop frequent urination, and is good at treating Ge Xiao [Diaphragm Wasting-Thirst]; Cishi (Magnetite) is black and enters the Kidney, tonifying the Kidney and benefiting Essence, hence it is used as an envoy herb (Yu Jiayan said: A friend of mine suffered from Xiao Ke [Wasting-Thirst]. Later, his thirst subsided slightly, but irritability increased, and his knees and feet became weak and flaccid. I recommended this pill added with Xijiao [Rhinocerotis Cornu]. A physician said: Treating the Heart with Huanglian and Xijiao for a Kidney disease is inverted. I replied: The Kidney is the gate of the Stomach. When Stomach heat transmits downward to the Kidney, the gate opens wide, allowing the Yang fire of the Heart to descend directly into the Kidney. Heart fire scorches the Kidney, causing irritability and lack of moistening. I use Xijiao and Huanglian to counteract this descending solar fire...)
(From Xu Renze)
Treats chronic Qi cough that has persisted for a long time, about to develop into Fei Wei [Lung Atrophy], alternating chills and fever, thick and sticky sputum and nasal discharge, wheezing and upward rushing of Qi, dry and cracked lips and mouth; there may also be hemoptysis. The patient gradually feels emaciated and frail, with scanty dark red urine, poor complexion, and erect hair. This also constitutes internal steaming-heat; and if chronic cough leads to Fei Yong [Lung Abscess], all expectorated matter becomes pus, discharged in varying amounts.
Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex) (1 sheng), Digupi (Lycii Cortex) (3 sheng. These two are decocted together to obtain 3 sheng of juice), Sheng Dizhi (Fresh Juice of Rehmanniae Radix) (5 sheng), Sheng Maidongzhi (Fresh Juice of Ophiopogonis Tuber) (2 sheng), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix) juice, Zao Gao (Jujube Paste). Stir continuously without stopping, decoct until thick like maltose syrup. Take an appropriate amount before going to bed at night.
These are herbs for the Hand Taiyin [Lung] channel. Sangbaipi drains the Lung and promotes water movement; Maidong tonifies the Lung and generates fluids; Digupi reduces fever and removes steaming-heat; Zhuli (Bamboo Sap) clears phlegm and nourishes blood (it can eliminate severe heat due to Yin deficiency); Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) dispels cold and warms the Stomach; Zao Gao tonifies Earth [Spleen] to generate Metal [Lung]; Dizhi and Gegen juice are sweet and cold to clear severe heat; Baimi (Honey) and Niusu (Butyrum Bovis) are sweet and moistening...
