Treats diarrhea that persists after the seventh day of smallpox, or diarrhea occurring ten-plus days later; both are treated with this formula.
Huangqi (Radix Astragali) [8 qian], Dangshen (Radix Codonopsis) [3 qian], Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) [2 qian], Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) [2 qian], Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) [2 qian], Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) [2 qian], Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) [1 qian], Honghua (Flos Carthami) [3 qian], Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) [1 qian, processed], Liangjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Officinalis) [5 fen], Guirou (Cortex Cinnamomi) [5 fen, coarse bark removed].
Decoct in water and take orally.
This formula is indicated specifically for diarrhea occurring six to seven days after the onset of smallpox. It is also effective for convulsions accompanied by diarrhea during the late stage of smallpox. It is not a formula for diarrhea occurring when smallpox first erupts.
Formula Song:
Zhi Xie Tiao Zhong uses Ginseng and Licorice, followed by Atractylodes, Angelica, Peony, Ligusticum, and Safflower;
Small doses of Aconite, Zingiber, and Cinnamon twig are used; suitable for all cases of Qi deficiency diarrhea.
Treats dysentery occurring five to six days after the onset of smallpox, whether the stool is white, red, or mixed red and white; all are treated.
Huangqi (Radix Astragali) [1 liang, decocted to make a soup for flushing powder], Huashi (Talcum) [1 liang, powdered].
Adding 5 qian of white sugar at night makes it even better.
This formula is my unique method. It is not only effective for pediatric smallpox and dysentery but also has miraculous effects on initial and chronic dysentery in adults. However, for initial adult dysentery, use 1.5 liang of Talcum and 1 liang of white sugar, without Huangqi. For chronic dysentery, add Huangqi, while keeping Talcum at 1.5 liang.
Formula Song:
Bao Yuan Hua Zhi is a formula combining tonification and purging; one liang of Astragalus decocted into soup,
One liang of Talcum powder taken with the soup stops dysentery without injuring Qi.
Treats persistent itching six to seven days after the onset of smallpox, where scratching breaks the skin without bleeding. Also treats hoarseness and aphonia.
Huangqi (Radix Astragali) [1 liang], Taoren (Semen Persicae) [2 qian, ground], Honghua (Flos Carthami) [2 qian], Zaocili (Spina Gleditsiae) [1 qian], Chishao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra) [1 qian], Shanjia (Corneus Scutellae Spinae / Pangolin Scales) [1 qian, stir-fried].
Decoct in water and take orally.
This formula treats severe itching six to seven days after smallpox onset, where scratching results in broken skin without bleeding. It is not a formula for itching occurring one or two days after smallpox first erupts.
Formula Song:
Zhu Yang Zhi Yang uses Astragalus, Peach Kernel, and Safflower, along with Gleditsia Spine, Red Peony Root, and Pangolin Scales;
Hoarseness and aphonia are treated similarly, due to exterior deficiency causing stagnation of interior Qi.
