If the manifestation of the disease does not correspond to the Qi of the current year, observe which year's Yunqi (Luck and Qi) it resembles. Seek the flexible treatment method from that year, and you will realize that all principles lie within the *Zhi Zhen Yao Lun* (Treatise on the Most Essential Truths).
The normal transformation and abnormal variation of the Six Qi, along with the Winning Qi (Sheng), Repaying Qi (Fu), and excessive influence, are complex and cannot be easily governed by simple principles. When the Six Qi arrive, they bring peace, warmth, or dust; intense heat or cool wind—these are the constants of seasonal transformation. Cracks open, expansion flourishes; fullness盈 (completeness) emerges and moves; storage and收敛 (contraction) under the governance of Geng Metal—are the constants of the transformative functions. Wind, rain, fog, and dew appear, shapes become lush and fresh; growth, harvest, and storage are the constants of Qi transformation. The Six Qi generate and conclude life; cold, warmth, humidity, and dryness allow fur, feathers, shells, and scales to grow and transform—all constitute the constants of generation. Vitality flourishes, nourishment thrives, firmness stores—this is the constant of administering policies (the governance of the Five Elements). Sudden great coolness pours down, burning and scattering, accompanied by dust, water, and hail—this is the constant of Qi variation. High brightness and clarity, deep yin darkness, sharp and desolate sounds, hard, sharp, and rigid solidity—this is the constant of executing orders (the execution of the Five Movements).
As manifestations of disease: abdominal urgency, sores and pain, body heat, accumulation of fluids, stagnation and obstruction, sneezing, vomiting, sores and ulcers, floating and deficient pulse, bodily edema—these are the constants of disease forms. Limb pain, fright and confusion, aversion to cold and shivering, delirium, convulsions and restlessness, visual obscuration, accumulation and fullness, diseases of the sacrum and knees—these are the constants of internal diseases. Perverse Qi, sadness and madness, epistaxis, vomiting and rushing upward, cholera-like vomiting and diarrhea, throat closure, tinnitus, skin cracking and peeling, nocturnal sweating—these are the constants of meridian diseases. Hypochondriac pain, vomiting and diarrhea, heavy speech, sudden violent diarrhea, flowing accumulation, prohibition of flow and excretion—these are the constants of the main disease location.
Regarding the twelve variations: virtue is repaid with virtue, transformation with transformation, policy with policy, order with order. If Qi is high, the pathology is high; if Qi is low, the pathology is low; if Qi is posterior, the pathology is posterior; if Qi is anterior, the pathology is anterior; if Qi is central, the pathology is central; if Qi is exterior, the pathology is exterior. This is the constancy of position. Excess Wind causes movement; excess Heat causes swelling; excess Dryness causes dryness; excess Cold causes edema; excess Dampness causes loose stools; in severe cases, pathological changes occur, such as fluid retention and organ swelling. Depending on where the Qi resides, one can describe its variations. The function of the Six Qi returns to what it overcomes (is overcome by), thereby generating specific transformations. Taiyin's Rain Transformation applies to Taiyang; Taiyang's Cold Transformation applies to Shaoyin; Shaoyin's Heat Transformation applies to Yangming; Yangming's Dryness Transformation applies to Jueyin; Jueyin's Wind Transformation applies to Taiyin. Each is destined to its location, serving merely as signs.
