King Qi's Huang Ji's elder brother, Huang Changqing, hosted a banquet at his home and invited Chunyu Yi and other guests. While the guests were seated but before the food was served, Chunyu Yi looked at Song Jian, the younger brother of King Qi, and said to him: "You are ill. In four or five days, your condition will worsen. You have pain in your waist and hypochondrium, making it impossible to bend or straighten your back, and you are unable to urinate freely. If not treated promptly, the pathogenic factor will invade and moisten the Kidney. Before it settles in the Five Zang organs, urgent treatment is required. Currently, the guest's pathology is moistening the Kidney; this is what is called 'Kidney Bi' (Kidney Obstruction Syndrome)."
Song Jian replied: "Indeed. I previously suffered from lower back and spine pain. Four or five days ago, several sons-in-law (Qian: son-in-law) saw a large stone near the granaries below Jingfang at my house and teased me into mimicking lifting it. I attempted to do so, but due to excessive effort, I could not rise, and then I put it down again. By evening, my lower back and spine hurt severely, and I could not urinate. This has persisted until today without relief. My illness resulted from a fondness for carrying heavy objects."
Chunyu Yi said: "I knew Song Jian was ill because I observed his complexion. The area of the Taiyang channel appeared dry, and the region above the Kidney area extending to the waist was withered, showing a withered color covering one-fourth of the area. Therefore, I deduced that the onset occurred four or five days ago. I prescribed a gentle decoction (Rou Tang) for him to take, and after eighteen days, he recovered."
In ancient times, there was a patient suffering from Chest Bi (Chest Obstruction Syndrome), experiencing tight and painful sensations in the heart like being pierced by an awl, unable to bend or straighten the body. A physician from Shu attributed this to evil blood in the chest mansion. He took several catties of raw leeks, crushed them to extract juice, and administered it to the patient. The patient indeed vomited the evil blood from the chest, and the disease subsequently resolved. Xiao Bing also recorded that newborn infants should be given juice from leek roots to induce vomiting of evil blood, ensuring they grow up without illness. This verifies that leeks can direct Qi to the Heart, remove evil Qi from the pericardium, and treat diseases in the chest (from *Records of Famous Physicians*).
Xin, the Chief Official of the Central Imperial Mansion in Qi, fell ill. Chunyu Yi went to diagnose him and, upon taking the pulse, informed him: "This is Heat Qi disease. However, since sweating occurs during summer and the pulse is slightly weakened, death is not imminent. This illness originated from bathing in flowing water while feeling severe cold. Subsequently, fever developed." Xin said: "That is correct. In winter last year, I served as an envoy for the King to Chu. Upon reaching Yangzhou Water in Ju County, the bridge was somewhat damaged. I held onto the carriage shafts, unwilling to cross. The horse panicked, throwing me into the water. I nearly drowned. Officials came to rescue me. After emerging from the water, my clothes were completely soaked. Soon after, my body felt cold, followed by intense heat, like fire. To this day, exposure to cold triggers the symptoms. I prescribed Ye Tang Huo Qi (Liquid Decoction and Fire Regulation Formula) to expel the heat. After one dose, sweating ceased; after two doses, the heat subsided; after three doses, the illness was cured. Even with movement in and out over twenty days of medication, no other ailments affected the body. I determined Xin's condition by palpating the pulse, which showed 'Bing Yin' (Concurrent Yin). The pulse method states: if Yin and Yang intersect in Heat disease, death ensues. Palpation revealed no intersection, only concurrent Yin. For concurrent Yin, administering harmonizing and clearing medications leads to recovery. Although the heat is not entirely exhausted, life is preserved. Kidney Qi may occasionally become turbid, appearing as a sparse pulse at the Taiyin pulse position; this indicates Water Qi. Since the Kidney governs Water, I identified it thus. If treated improperly even briefly, it would transform into alternating chills and fever."
