If a person accidentally ingests raw arsenic (Pishuang), simply drinking raw oil until vomiting occurs is sufficient; the toxic qi of the arsenic will naturally dissipate and cause no harm.

During the Jiatai era, Fan Libu Dao served as the Prefect of Fuzhou. He recorded a prescription on a stone tablet: For anyone suffering from Gu poison (a traditional concept referring to poisoning caused by venomous insects or magical substances), regardless of how long ago it occurred, boil one duck egg, insert a silver hairpin into it, and hold it in the mouth. After approximately the time it takes to eat one meal, remove it. If both the hairpin and the egg turn black, it indicates poisoning. The prescription consists of: 2 liang of Chinese Gall (Wubeizi), 1 qian of powdered Sulfur (Liuhuang), 3 cun of Licorice Root (Gancao) (half processed to reduce its fire-toxicity, half used raw), 10 wen worth each of Clove (Dingxiang), Aucklandia Root (Muxiang), and Musk (Shexiang), 3 wen of Calomel (Qingfen), and 20 grains of Glutinous Rice (Nuomi). Total eight ingredients. Place them in a bottle with water filling ten parts, decoct until seven parts remain. When wrinkles appear on the surface of the medicine, it is ready. Filter through cooked silk to remove dregs. Administer orally. Have the patient lie supine with the head elevated. If the patient feels something rushing towards the heart, stop administration immediately. If vomit contains foul matter resembling fish bladder, this is the expulsion of evil pathogens. After vomiting, drink one cup of tea; diarrhea is not harmful. Subsequently, cook white porridge for nourishment. Avoid cold, raw, greasy foods, and pickles. Ten days later, take three pills of Jiedu Wan (Detoxification Pill). Recovery can be expected within ten days. The price of these three aromatic herbs—Clove, Aucklandia, and Musk—was 10 wen each during the Jiatai era; stating that their current prices are several times higher is reasonable. (From *Leibian*)

Wang Zhongli was fond of alcohol. In his prime, sores erupted on his nose and spread to his pharynx. He was deeply distressed, but medication proved ineffective. Monk Fa HT prescribed him Heshouwu Wan (Polygonum Multiflorum Pill), requiring two jin of the herb. A servant who knew herbal medicine dug up the root near a grave. The preparation method forbade iron vessels; instead, it should be placed in a clay mortar, steamed over black soybeans until cooked. The resulting product had an aroma perceptible to the nose. The water used for steaming was believed to dispel wind. Initially, extreme heat was felt, gradually progressing to numbness. By evening, severe swelling occurred, obscuring the eyebrows, eyes, nose, and ears. Onlookers were terrified. Wang’s mother, Gao Shi, said, "One does not contract wind-leprosy overnight. My son has encountered poison, but why to this extent?" I heard that Ginger Juice (Shengjiang Zhi) and Adzuki Bean (Chixiaodou) can detoxify, while Bitterroot (Shandougen) and Black Mussel Powder (Heibangfen) can reduce swelling. I urgently ordered the servant to crush ginger juice and mix the powders of these three ingredients for topical application. By midnight, the swelling subsided, and by dawn, he returned to normal. This likely occurred because the initial collection of Polygonum Multiflorum was imprecise, allowing it to be contaminated with Wild Wolfbane (Yelangdu), leading to this adverse reaction. (Ibid.)

Poisoning from Chinese medicines and all other toxins induced by alcohol is difficult to treat because alcohol circulates through the blood vessels and spreads throughout the body. Poisoning induced by food is easier to treat because food and medicine enter the stomach together; the stomach can accommodate mixed toxins, which are then expelled via feces. Since the toxic qi has not yet entered the blood vessels, recovery is easier. To resolve various food-induced poisons, chew raw Licorice Root (Gancao) thoroughly and swallow it, which induces vomiting to expel the toxin. (From *Suosui Lu*)
