Jiang Zhonglian suffered from fever after exposure to cold pathogens, with swelling on both sides of the jaw as large as chestnuts, and numerous hard nodules on his arms. He was unable to eat or defecate, exhibited manic restlessness, and experienced intense thirst. His pulse was floating, rapid, and irregular. The physician treated it as a toxic eruption arising from Cold Damage (Shanghan). I said, "Incorrect. This is caused by dryness driving out wind, leading to internal generation." A large dose of Shugan Yishen Tang (Liver-Soothing and Kidney-Nourishing Decoction) was administered. After five doses, the swelling subsided and bowel movements resumed; after ten doses, the heat cleared and appetite returned. Finally, he was regulated and cured using Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) supplemented with Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix) and Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus).
