Method 32:
Moxibustion for Reverted Bladder (Zhuǎn Bāo):
Yùquán (Jade Spring) acupoint: Indicated for lower back pain and difficult urination. If the condition is reverted bladder, apply seven moxa cones.
Seventeenth thoracic vertebra paravertebral area: Apply fifty moxa cones.
Additionally, moxibustion at one cun below the umbilicus.
Additionally, moxibustion at four cun below the umbilicus; the number of cones should correspond to the patient's age.
Juéyīnshū (Liver Back-Shu) acupoint, located at the fourth thoracic vertebra paravertebral area: Indicated for diaphragmatic qi stagnation in the chest, accumulation masses, and frequent vomiting. Apply moxa cones corresponding to the patient's age.
Shuǐdào (Water Pathway) acupoint: Located five cun apart on both sides of the pubic symphysis (qū gǔ). Indicated for heat qi in the Sanjiao (Triple Burner), bladder, and kidneys. The number of cones should correspond to the patient's age. The pubic symphysis is located five cun below the umbilicus; Shuidao is located three and a half cun lateral to the midline from the end of the pubic symphysis.
Dàhéng (Great Horizontal) acupoint: Located two and a half cun lateral to the umbilicus on both sides. Indicated for immobility of the four limbs, excessive sweating, and dysentery with loose stools. Apply moxa cones corresponding to the patient's age.
Xiàjíshū (Lower Extreme Back-Shu) acupoint, located at the fifteenth thoracic vertebra paravertebral area: Indicated for abdominal diseases, lower back pain, and cold fluid retention pouring downward from the bladder. Apply moxa cones corresponding to the patient's age.
Xiǎochángshū (Small Intestine Back-Shu) acupoint: Indicated for abnormal downward flow of fluids from the bladder and Sanjiao, cold-heat disorders of the large and small intestines, bloody or white dysentery, and lumbar and spinal pain. Also indicated for difficult urination and leukorrhea in women. Apply fifty moxa cones for each indication.
Xiǎochángshū (Small Intestine Back-Shu) acupoint: Indicated for cold-heat disorders of the Sanjiao; the method is similar to moxibustion for the Kidney.
Treatment for Huòluàn (Cholera-like Syndrome):
For all cases of Huòluàn, moxibustion ensures that even if immediate recovery does not occur, death can be avoided. Do not apply moxa in reverse order. Symptoms may present as abdominal pain first, or diarrhea followed by vomiting; treat according to the specific symptoms. Place salt in the umbilicus and apply fourteen moxa cones; this also treats abdominal distension.
For Huòluàn with muscle cramps (zhuǎn jīn), have the patient lie prone with arms extended along the body. Place a rope horizontally across the tips of both elbows. Based on the rope's position, apply one hundred moxa cones on both sides of the spine, one and a half cun lateral to it. This method is invariably effective. (According to *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang*: This is Hua Tuo's method.)
If heart pain and vomiting occur first, apply fourteen moxa cones to Jùquè (Concentrated Palace) acupoint. If ineffective, apply another fourteen cones.
If abdominal pain occurs first, apply fourteen moxa cones to Tàicāng (Imperial Granary) acupoint. If ineffective, apply another fourteen cones.
If diarrhea occurs first, apply fourteen moxa cones to Gǔmén (Gate of Grain) acupoint, located two cun lateral to the umbilicus. For males, use the left side; for females, the right side. It is also known as the Front-Mu point of the Large Intestine. If ineffective, apply another fourteen cones.
For uncontrollable vomiting and diarrhea, or when the pulses of the Three Yin and Three Yang meridians are rapid, apply moxa three cun below the xiphoid process (heart shield bone).
Additionally, apply sixty to seventy moxa cones at three cun below the umbilicus.
For Huòluàn with upper vomiting and lower diarrhea, apply fourteen moxa cones below the umbilicus.
Additionally, apply twenty-one moxa cones to Guānyuán (Origin of Qi) acupoint.
For cold extremities, apply seven moxa cones to Sānyīnjiāo (Three Yin Intersection) acupoint on each side. If ineffective, apply another seven cones.
For muscle cramps, apply twenty-one moxa cones to Yǒngquán (Gushing Spring) acupoint. If ineffective, apply seven cones to the white flesh margin above the tendons at the site of swelling on the foot; recovery will be immediate.
Additionally, apply fourteen moxa cones to Cígōng (Benevolent Palace) acupoint.
For ascending rebellious qi with muscle cramps, apply twenty-one moxa cones to the white flesh margins on both sides of the swollen ankle.
Additionally, apply moxa cones corresponding to the patient's age at the center of the transverse bone below the lower abdomen.
For muscle cramps with four-fold coldness (extremity coldness), apply one moxa cone at the junction of black and white skin at the root of each breast (Rǔgēn).
For muscle cramps in the arms and chest, apply seven moxa cones to the white flesh margin of the palm.
Additionally, moxibustion at Dànzhōng (Center of Chest), Zhōngfǔ (Central Treasury), Jùquè, Wèiguǎn (Stomach Tube), Chǐzé (Cubit Marsh), and Chéngshān (Supporting Mountain) acupoints.
Apply one hundred moxa cones to Chéngshān (Supporting Mountain) acupoint.
If diarrhea persists, apply seven moxa cones to Dàdū (Great Metropolis) acupoint, located at the white flesh margin medial to the proximal interphalangeal joint of the big toe on each side.
If muscle cramps move into the abdomen causing severe distress, have four people hold the patient's limbs. Apply fourteen moxa cones one cun above the umbilicus. After four or five cones, the spasms will cease naturally; release the patient's limbs.
Additionally, Zhōngguǎn (Middle Tube) and Jiànlǐ (Establish Interior) acupoints both indicate Huòluàn with borborygmus, abdominal pain and distension, wiry and urgent upward rushing qi. Acupuncture depth is eight fen; retain the needle for seven breaths; employ reducing method synchronized with five inhalations; withdraw the needle quickly. Moxibustion can be applied up to one hundred cones, or fourteen cones twice daily.
