Mainly treats severe edema, with significant swelling of the head, face, and entire body.
Ku Hu (Bitter Gourd/Fruit), using only the white pith, rolled into granules the size of soybeans.
Take the above single ingredient, wrap it in flour, boil for one boiling point, and swallow seven granules on an empty stomach. Afternoon urination will discharge one sheng of fluid. After three to four days, water discharge continues naturally; when the body becomes significantly emaciated, the condition is cured.
Be cautious with diet flavors for three years. Ku Hu must be good quality without black spots or mold; otherwise, it is toxic and unsuitable for use.
Treats edema.
Areca Seed (Binglang), Cinnamon Twig Heart (Guixin), Trichosanthes Fruit (Gualou), Ephedra Herb (Mahuang, de-stemmed), Apricot Seed (Xingren, peeled, tips removed, twin kernels excluded, stir-fried), Poria (Fuling), Pepper Eye (Jiaomu), Atractylodes Rhizome (Baizhu) [each 3 liang], Prepared Aconite Root (Fuzi, processed, peeled), Evodia Fruit (Wuzhuyu) [5 he], Magnolia Bark (Nongpi, stir-fried), Dried Ginger (Ganjiang), Astragalus Root (Huangqi), Sargassum Thallus (Haizao, absent in some versions), Siegesbeckia Herba (Mufangji), Lepidium Seed (Tingli, stir-fried), Licorice Root (Gancao, roasted) [each 2 liang].
Crush and sieve the above seventeen ingredients into powder. Mix with refined white honey to form pills the size of a Chinese quince seed. Take two pills with water, three times daily. Increase to four pills if ineffective, then add two more pills, up to a maximum of twelve pills. This formula is suitable for elderly and pediatric edema, deficiency-type swelling, and acute swelling with asthma following severe illness. (Note: Some advise avoiding Haizai, suggesting this ingredient may not be appropriate.)
Treats Feng Shui (Wind Edema) with whole-body swelling that feels like bursting, promoting diuresis.
Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng), Polyporus (Zhuling, peeled), Alisma Rhizome (Zexie), Ephedra Herb (Mahuang, de-stemmed), Poria (Fuling) [each 4 liang], Astragalus Root (Huangqi) [3 liang], Phytolacca Root (Ze Qi), Atractylodes Rhizome (Baizhu) [each 5 liang], Apricot Seed (Xingren, peeled, tips removed, twin kernels excluded), Euphorbia Root (Daji) [each 1 sheng], Angelica Pubescens Root (Duohuo) [8 liang], Wine [1 dou], Soybean [2 sheng, boiled with 7 sheng of water to yield 1 sheng of juice].
Chop the above thirteen ingredients. Boil together with the soybean juice and wine to obtain 7 sheng of liquid. Divide into six or seven doses, consuming all within one day and night. The treatment is considered effective when urination is extremely profuse.
Treats generalized severe swelling due to water retention, weakness in the four limbs, or conditions arising from Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst), Huang Dan (Jaundice), Zhi Yin (Fluid retention in the chest/hypochondrium), internal deficiency, obstruction of Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive Qi), failure of Blood and Qi transformation, Qi stagnation in the skin, restless breathing, abdominal rumbling and distension, and blindness.
Phytolacca Root (Ze Qi Gen) [10 liang], Adzuki Bean (Chixiaodou) [2 sheng], Poria (Fuling) [3 liang], Carp (Li Yu, one weighing 5 jin, cleaned of guts), Fresh Ginger (Sheng Jiang, sliced) [8 liang], Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Ophiopogon Tuber (Mendong, heart removed), Licorice Root (Gancao, roasted) [each 2 liang].
Boil the Carp and Adzuki Beans in 1 dou 7 sheng of water until reduced by 7 sheng. Remove the fish and beans. Add the remaining herbs and boil to obtain 4 sheng 5 he of liquid. Strain. Take 3 he per dose, three times daily. For weak patients, take 2 he per dose, twice daily. If Qi descends and asthma stops, increase to 4 he per dose. At this stage, urination should be slightly facilitated, swelling decreases, or mild diarrhea occurs. If urination becomes too profuse, restart with 1 he per dose and stop when urination is normal. If Carp is unavailable, Crucian Carp may be used. If water retention is severe, preventing lying down or turning over, add 1 jin of Ze Qi Gen. If thirsty, add 2 liang of Gualou. If coughing, add 2 liang of Zi Wan, 1 liang of Xi Xin, 1 liang of Kuan Dong Hua, and 3 liang of Guixin, and increase the fish broth by 2 sheng.
