Indicated for Piān Fēng (Hemiplegia or wind-stroke affecting one side of the body), formulated by Zhen Quan as the An Ping Gong Formula:
Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Gouji (Cibotii Rhizoma), Bi Xie (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma), Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) [each 1 liang], Yiyiren (Coicis Semen), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, peeled from skin and tips, and those with two kernels), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) [each 2 liang], Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba, 4 liang, nodes removed), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 5 liang, sliced), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) [each 3 liang, crushed].
The above sixteen ingredients are coarsely chopped. Decoct in 12 sheng (approx. 2.4 liters) of water until 3 sheng remains. Divide into three doses. If improvement is felt after one dose, administer another dose. For each course of decoction, combine with acupuncture once. After nine courses of decoction and nine sessions of acupuncture, the disease will be cured. Acupuncture points include Fengchi (GB20) x1, Jianyu (LI15) x1, Quchi (LI11) x1, Neiguan (PC6, text says "Wen Gou") x1, Wushu (GB26) x1, Yanglingquan (GB34) x1, Shangjuxu/Xialian (ST39) x1, totaling seven acupoints.
Beishen of Renshou Palace suffered from a foot ailment. By imperial edict, he was needled at Huantiao (GB30), Yanglingquan (GB34), Shangjuxu (ST37), Xiangleian (ST39), and Yangfu (GB38). He was able to walk immediately thereafter.
Zhao Qing, Minister of Justice, suffered from wind-disease, with immobility of the waist and legs, unable to kneel or rise. Needling at Shangliao (BL31) x2, Huantiao (GB30) x2, Yanglingquan (GB34) x2, and Shangjuxu/Xialian (ST39) x2 allowed him to kneel and rise immediately.
Formula for Wei Tui Feng (Rheumatic flaccidity or wind-dampness causing weakness):
Cangerzi (Xanthii Fructus, 5 sheng, leaves may also be used), Yangtao (Actinidiae Fructus, sliced), Suodie (Polygoni Multiflori Caulis, sliced), Chixiaodou (Phaseoli Radiati Semen) [each 2.5 sheng], Yan (Sal, 2 sheng).
The above five ingredients are decocted in 25 dou (approx. 125 liters) of water until 5 dou remains. Adjust the temperature to suit, and soak the affected foot in the liquid. The depth should reach Juegu (GB39), but not exceed it. Soak for a duration equivalent to cooking 5 dou of rice. Remove the foot afterwards. Avoid wind and cold; sweat will emerge from the head.
Discussion states: The Sages consider Wind to be the chief of all diseases, deeply worrying. Therefore, one must avoid wind as one avoids arrows. To defend against wind pathogens, methods such as herbal decoctions, acupuncture, moxibustion, and steaming can be used; any single method can cure the disease. However, Fire Moxa (Moxibustion) possesses unique efficacy. Although acupuncture, decoctions, and powders are effective, moxibustion is paramount. In the past, Hua Tuo treated Emperor Wu of Wei’s Head Wind (Tou Feng) with acupuncture alone, curing it instantly. Years after Hua Tuo’s death, the Emperor’s Head Wind recurred. Had Hua Tuo applied moxibustion after needling at that time, would it have recurred? It recurred only because moxibustion was not applied, leaving the root cause intact. Thus, students of medicine should not rely solely on acupuncture and decoctions, expecting complete recovery without enduring the discomfort of moxibustion. How can one eradicate the root and block the source if one refuses moxibustion? Therefore, despite abundant medicines, among all therapies, fire moxa is superior. At the onset of illness, urgent moxibustion should be applied; once the moxa is applied, the condition stabilizes, and vision clears before the decoction is even finished. Is this not crucial?
The moxibustion method is as follows: First, moxa-burn Baihui (GV20); second, Fengchi (GB20); third, Dazhui (GV14); fourth, Jianjing (GB21); fifth, Quchi (LI11); sixth, Jianshi (PC5). Each point receives three moxa cones (Zhuang). Then, Zusanli (ST36) receives five Zhuang. The moxa cone should be the size of a Cangerzi (Xanthium fruit) and must be made compact and solid. The mugwort must be old and well-processed. Thereafter, apply moxibustion daily to these points until the number of Zhuang corresponds to the patient's age. Whenever a person feels slight mental or physical discomfort, they must moxa-burn these points, three Zhuang each, and must not take this lightly. Neglecting this morning and evening can lead to death. Beware! Beware!
Another discussion states: When learning physicians intend to treat a disease, they must first moxa-burn the aforementioned points, regardless of whether wind is present or not. This method is a great art of medicine and should be deeply understood. It is the essence of essentials; nothing surpasses this technique. Therefore, always prepare mugwort collected on the third day of the third lunar month for emergency crises. Mugwort collected on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month is also good, but inferior to that of the third day of the third month. For persons who have suddenly died or suffer from wind-stroke with aphasia, urgent moxibustion is required. Sudden death occurs because wind enters the Five Zang Organs...
