Formula for treating frequent dysentery with scanty and difficult urination:
Zhu Ling (Polyporus), Fu Ling (Poria), Ze Xie (Alisma), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (each 4 liang), Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, peeled from tips and double kernels, roasted), Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Gu Pi (Oryzae Fructus Pericarpium), Zi Wan (Asteris Radix), Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, each 3 liang, sliced).
The above twenty-three ingredients are crushed, sifted to make a powder. Use one sheng and half of water, boil until the residue amount corresponds to five fang cun bi, obtaining one sheng of liquid. Take it in one dose. Take twice a day; if unable to tolerate twice, take once per dose. From October to the end of February, this formula may be taken.
Discussion states: If people do not exercise caution, they may contract wind disease, resulting in hemiplegia, slurred speech, and the inability to manage various affairs. This is called "Wei Tui Bing" (Waning Decline Disease); those who contract it will not survive beyond ten years. One should use this formula. After recovery, one must still remain cautious. It should not be used before illness onset. One must cut off excessive thinking, reduce speech, and remain idle in无为 (non-action), so that permanent cure can be achieved. If one continues to act like worldly people, pursuing fame and profit, and harboring desires for wealth and lust, do not insist on bitter medical treatment, as medicine would merely be a futile attempt at healing. One should reflect upon this wisely. Generally, when sudden wind-stroke occurs, one must follow this sequence of decoction administration to achieve recovery. Students should ponder carefully, and it will become clear.
Whenever wind-stroke first occurs, characterized by limbs unable to hold themselves, mental confusion, blurred vision where one cannot recognize people, and incoherent speech, since most wind-strokes arise from heat, one must be cautious in medication and abstain from wine, noodles, mutton, raw vegetables, cold food, pork, fish, chicken, beef, horse meat, and garlic, so that recovery can occur. Upon onset, immediately take this Zhu Li Tang (Bamboo Sap Decoction):
Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap, 2 sheng), Sheng Jiang Zhi (Fresh Ginger Juice, 3 he), Sheng Ge Zhi (Puerariae Radix Juice, 1 sheng).
Mix the above three ingredients, warm them, and divide into three doses. Take one dose at dawn, one at dusk, and one at night. After taking, if one feels abnormalities in the four limbs but seems to improve, proceed to the following formula:
Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, nodes removed), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 1.5 liang), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, 40 pieces, peeled from tips and double kernels), Ling Yang Jiao (Saiga Tataricae Cornu, 2 liang, shaved), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 4 liang, sliced), Sheng Ge Zhi (Puerariae Radix Juice, 5 he; alternatively Di Huang Zhi / Rehmanniae Radix Juice), Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap, 1 sheng), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 6 liang, wrapped in silk), Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed, peeled), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba or Rubra), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle, each 1 liang).
The above sixteen ingredients are chopped. Use seven sheng of water, boil until half remains, then add the sap juice and boil until two sheng and seven he remain. Divide into three warm doses. After five days, take another dose. Progressively take three doses. Observe the same dietary restrictions as above. As symptoms gradually diminish, proceed to the next formula:
Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, nodes removed), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Ling Yang Jiao (Saiga Tataricae Cornu, shaved, each 2 liang), Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap, 2 sheng), Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix, 1 liang).
The above nine ingredients are chopped. Use four sheng of water, combine with the sap, boil until three sheng remain. Divide into three doses. Take one dose every two days. Progressively take three doses. If hands and feet are cold, add Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 5 liang) and Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 2 liang). If symptoms persist, proceed to the next formula:
Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, nodes removed), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba or Rubra), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 1.5 liang), Ling Yang Jiao (Saiga Tataricae Cornu, shaved, 2 liang), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 2 liang, sliced), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed, cut into three parts, peeled), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 2 liang, crushed), Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle).
The above seventeen ingredients are chopped. Use eight sheng of water, boil until half remains, add the sap, and boil until two sheng and half remain. Divide into three doses. Wait the time equivalent to a person walking ten li between doses. If there is qi stagnation, add Ju Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), and Wu Jia Pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex) (each 1 liang). Once symptoms have subsided, one may frequently take the following Zhu San (Boiled Powder) formula:
Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba or Rubra), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Shan Zhu Yu (Corni Fructus), Shu Yu (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma), Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Cortex), Tian Men Dong (Asparagi Radix, heart removed), Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex Praeparata cum Melle), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Dan Shen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Ling Yang Jiao (Saiga Tataricae Cornu, shaved), Wu Jia Pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex), Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis), Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle, each 4 liang), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, nodes removed), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, processed, peeled), Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix, heart removed), Ju Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (each 3 liang), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, 2 liang, sliced), Gan Ju Hua (Chrysanthemi Indici Flos), Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen) (each 2 sheng), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, ground), Gan Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata) (each 6 liang).
The above thirty-three ingredients are crushed and sifted to make a powder. For each boiling, use three sheng of water, add three liang of powder, boil until one sheng remains. Filter through silk to remove dregs, and take in one dose. Take one dose daily. If one feels irritability and heat in the epigastrium, use Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap) instead of water for boiling. (Qian Jin Fang contains: Huang Qin, Bin Lang, Gao Ben, Du Zhong, Xi Jiao, but lacks Shan Zhu Yu, Shu Yu, Gan Ju, Mai Men Dong, Fu Zi.)
For those suffering from wind disease, who mostly present with heat signs, it is suitable to take Jing Li Fang (Vitex Sap Decoction):
Jing Li (Vitex Sap), Zhu Li (Bamboo Sap), Sheng Jiang Zhi (Fresh Ginger Juice) (each 5 he).
Mix the above three ingredients, warm them, and take as one dose. Every morning take the boiled powder, and in the afternoon take this Jing Li. Maintain this regimen for recuperation.
Discussion states: When contracting wind disease, treat it according to this sequence. Do not deviate. If one does not follow this, one will miss the critical opportunity, and life will be in danger.
