[Shenfang for Treating Hair Loss by Hua Tuo]
Wuhui (Aconiti Radix lateralis preparata), Mangcao (Daphnes Genkwa Flower), Shinanxing (Arisaema cum Bile), Xuduan (Dipsaci Radix), Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Fructus, skin removed and seeds roasted), Zelan (Lycopus lucidus Herba), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) each 2 liang; Xinyiren (Magnoliae Flos stamen) 1 liang; Baiye (Cupressi Cacumen) 0.5 sheng; Zhuzhi (Suis Medulla) 3 sheng.
The above ten ingredients are soaked in Kujiu (bitter wine/vinegar) overnight. They are then decocted with Zhuzhi in a cauldron on an east-facing stove, using reed firewood as fuel. First, three mounds of earth are prepared. For every three boils, one mound of earth is added underneath to increase heat; when the boiling subsides, it is returned to its original position, repeating this process until the third boil. Then, the mixture is placed on top of the earth mounds again. After completing this cycle three times, the ointment is ready. The dregs are filtered out, and the liquid is placed in a copper vessel. It is buried at the seventh drip point counting westward from the western eaves of the house. After thirty days, the medicine is complete. For children, the scalp should be shaved, and applied three times daily; for adults, wash the hair first, then apply.
Huangqi (Astragali Radix - *Note: Text says 'Huang', likely Huangqi or Huangbo, context suggests nourishing blood, often Huangqi or Danggui pair, but literal translation used*), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix alba), Mangcao (Daphnes Genkwa Flower), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Xinyiren (Magnoliae Flos stamen), Gadihuangdi (Rehmanniae Radix preparata), Bencao (Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma), Shehan (Ophiopogonis Radix? *Note: Shehan usually refers to Ophiorrhiza mungos or similar, literal 'Snake Contain'*) each 1 liang; Xiebai (Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus) 0.5 sheng; Wumayou (Sesami Oleum nigrum) 4.5 sheng; Magao (Equini Medulla) 2 sheng.
The above fifteen ingredients are decocted over low heat using the "three ups and three downs" method (heating to boiling and allowing to cool repeatedly). When the Baizhi turns yellow, the ointment is ready. Filter out the dregs, wash the hair, and then apply.
Da dou (Sojae Semen preparatum) 5 sheng; Cujiangshui (Vinegar grain water) 2 sheng.
The above two ingredients are boiled to obtain 5 sheng of juice. Pour it over the hair; it should heal after several months.
Hufen (Cerussa / Lead Carbonate), Baihui (Calcii Carbonas / White Lime) each 1 part.
The above two ingredients are mixed with Jizi bai (Albumen Ovi Galli). First, wash the head thoroughly with Ganjiang (rice washing water), then apply. If urgent results are desired, wrap with oil cloth overnight, wash off with Zaodou (soap bean powder), and the hair will become black, soft, and continuous. Alternatively, select 4 sheng of fine black beans, boil to obtain 4 sheng of juice, remove the beans, and wash the hair cleanly with good ash lye. After drying, immediately apply hot bean juice, wrap with oil cloth, leave overnight before unwrapping. Once dry, apply Xiongzhi (Ursi Medulla) again, still wrapping with oil cloth. The color will be black like a knee joint, and one application lasts three years without change.
Shujiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium) 3.5 liang; Mangcao (Daphnes Genkwa Flower) 2 liang; Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Rugu (Rutae Fructus? *Note: Ru usually refers to Rutaceae fruit or similar aromatic herb*), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix preparata), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) each 1 liang.
The above eight ingredients are pounded and sifted into an extremely fine powder. Take fresh Shengzhuzhi (Suis Medulla), remove the fascia, weigh exactly 20 liang, mix with the medicinal powder, and pound together until completely dissolved. After the medicine is prepared, wash the hair extremely clean with white rice water (Baimigan) every night, massaging the scalp. After four or five days, soft, fine, white vellus hairs will gradually grow from the hair follicles. After fifteen days, they will gradually turn black. After more than a month, the hair will grow to five cun in length, and usage can then be stopped.
