Narcissus bulb (Shuixianhua Zi), Paeonia lactiflora root (Shaoyao), and Lotus leaf (Heye) are ground together into powder and taken orally with plain boiled water; this is quite effective.
If the nourishment of the Zang-Fu organs is improper, it leads to obstruction in the Sanjiao (Triple Burner, a concept referring to the upper, middle, and lower cavities of the torso and their functions), causing the intestines and stomach to fail in their normal movement. Consequently, if one drinks water or fluids, they stagnate and do not disperse. If further exposed to cold pathogenic factors, these accumulate to form Pi masses (Pi disease: accumulations located laterally between the hypochondrium). Pi refers to pathological accumulations situated on one side between the two hypochondria, which cause pain at times. The prescription is as follows:
Achyranthes bidentata root (Niuxi), Immature bitter orange (Zhishi, stir-baked), Poria cocos (Fuling), and Turtle shell (Biejia, stir-baked), each 8 fen; Platycodon grandiflorus root (Jiegeng), Paeonia lactiflora root (Shaoyao), Atractylodes macrocephala rhizome (Baizhu), Ginseng radix (Renshen), Magnolia officinalis bark (Noupu, stir-baked), Rhubarb (Dahuang), Cinnamon twig (Guixin), and Areca seed (Binglang), each 6 fen.
The above ingredients are crushed and sieved, mixed with honey to form pills. Taken on an empty stomach with warm wine, 20 pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds per dose, twice daily. Gradually increase the dosage to 30 pills.
Zheng disease arises from irregular exposure to cold and heat, leading to deficiency of Qi in the Zang-Fu organs and indigestion of food and drink, which accumulate internally. Over time, they grow into solid masses that are firmly fixed and immobile. If left for years, the person becomes emaciated while the abdomen enlarges, eventually leading to death. The treatment is as follows:
Asarum heterotropoides root with nitre (Shewang, 2 liang, roasted); Sichuan pepper (Shujiao, 300 grains).
Crush into powder, bind with egg white to form pills. Half should be the size of sesame seeds, half the size of adzuki beans. Start by taking pills the size of sesame seeds, gradually increasing to two pills the size of adzuki beans. If there is no effect ("bu zhi"), slightly increase the dose until therapeutic effect is achieved ("yi zhi wei du").
If a patient suddenly has a hard object in the abdomen, hard as stone, with stabbing pain, crying and calling out day and night, and does not receive treatment, death will occur within one hundred days. The prescription is as follows:
Achyranthes bidentata root (Niuxigen), 2 jin; Wine, 1 dou.
First, sun-dry the Achyranthes bidentata root until extremely dry. Place it in 1 dou of wine, soak it in a sealed vessel, seal the mouth, and place it in hot ashes to warm it, allowing the medicinal properties to extract. Initially take 5-6 he, up to 1 sheng, adjusting the amount according to judgment.
Some people have a craving for raw rice (Sun Simiao notes: "Ya" implies hunger and the desire to eat). The longer this persists, the stronger the craving. If unable to obtain rice, clear fluid flows from the chest; obtaining rice stops this. Undigested rice forms Zheng knots. The treatment is as follows:
Chicken feces (Jishi), 1 sheng; White rice (Baimi), 5 he.
Stir-fry together until the rice is scorched, crush into powder. Take with 1 sheng of water in one dose. Vomiting will occur shortly after, expelling the Zheng knot resembling crushed rice juice. If no knot exists, white foamy phlegm-water will be vomited, after which the person will detest rice and refuse to eat it. There are no dietary restrictions.
