The Large Intestine is the Fu-organ of the Lung. It serves as the official responsible for transmission and reception, often referred to as the "Official of the Granary." If a Lung disease persists without resolution, the pathogen transmits into the Large Intestine. The Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian (Shou Yangming Dachang Jing) is its associated meridian. Cold causes diarrhea; Heat causes constipation and accumulation.
If the Qi of the Large Intestine is exhausted, uncontrolled diarrhea occurs; death ensues when the diarrhea ceases due to exhaustion. Extreme Heat leads to blood in the stool. Wind invading the Large Intestine also causes lower bleeding. Excess Heat results in abdominal distension and fullness with inability to pass stool. Deficiency-Cold leads to slippery, unregulated diarrhea. The Large Intestine alternates between deficiency and excess, with symptoms appearing and disappearing intermittently. Cold causes loose stools; Heat causes heavy, turbid feces. The presence of accumulated material causes chills and fever, resembling Malaria (Nüe). If cold accumulation remains unresolved, pain occurs around the umbilicus, preventing prolonged standing. After the pain subsides, white discharge is passed. This is known as "white matter." Deficiency manifests as a preference for fullness, accompanied by wheezing, coughing, and a sensation of a lump obstructing the throat and pharynx.
The Kidney is the residence of Spirit (Shen) and the root of life. Externally, it connects to the ears. In men, it stores Essence (Jing); in women, it houses Blood (Xue). It forms an interior-exterior relationship with the Bladder. The Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian (Zu Shaoyin Shen Jing) and Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian (Zu Taiyang Pangguang Jing) are their associated meridians. Exhaustion of Kidney Qi leads to premature death before one's natural lifespan is fulfilled. Kidney Qi prospers in Winter. A pulse that is deep and soft (Chen Ru) is considered normal (Ping). Deviations from this indicate disease. A pulse like striking stones indicates "Excess" (Tai Guo), suggesting external pathology; a pulse departing rapidly resembling rapidity indicates "Deficiency" (Bu Ji), suggesting internal pathology. Excess causes emaciation, pain in the spinal meridians, and shortness of breath (original note: body wasting and shortness of breath, reluctance to speak); Deficiency causes a feeling of emptiness akin to hunger, coldness in the hypochondriac region, pain in the spine, fullness in the small intestine and abdomen, and slippery urination or urine turning red-yellow. Furthermore, a Kidney pulse coming steadily and heavily like a hook, firm upon pressure, is normal. A pulse coming like pulling a vine, becoming firmer upon pressure, indicates disease. A pulse coming like a turning rope, sharp like striking stones, indicates death. A Kidney pulse showing only Stone-like characteristics without Stomach Qi also indicates death. Water retention in the Kidney causes abdominal swelling, umbilical swelling, heavy painful waist, difficulty urinating, dampness in the genital area resembling a cow's nose, sweating on the head; this is a counter-flow Cold pattern. Difficulty defecating with a thin face follows. Kidney disease presents with cold extremities, red face, yellow eyes, urinary incontinence, vexatious bone-joint pain, lower abdominal knotting pain, and Qi rushing up to the heart. The pulse should be deep, fine, and slippery; if it is instead floating, large, and slow, and the complexion should be black but is not, this represents Earth overcoming Water, a major counter-flow pattern, ten deaths with no cure. Additionally, Kidney disease presenting with black complexion, weak Qi, slight shortness of breath, deafness in both ears, spontaneous loss of essence, reduced diet, clear urine, cold below the knees, and a deep, slippery, slow pulse is treatable. A Winter pulse that is deep, soft, and slippery is normal; if it is floating, choppy, and short, Lung overacting on Kidney makes the disease easy to treat; if it is wiry, fine, and long, Liver overacting on Kidney heals spontaneously; if it is floating, large, and surging, Heart overacting on Kidney causes no harm. Kidney disease causing abdominal swelling, leg edema, wheezing/cough, heavy body, night sweats, and aversion to wind. Deficiency causes chest pain, lower abdominal pain, coldness,厥逆 (Jue Ni - reversal cold), and unhappiness. Yin pathogens entering the Kidney cause bone pain, neck traction from the waist, muscle wasting, and back pain. These result from heavy lifting, sexual activity followed by sweating and exposure to wind, bathing in cold water, or prolonged standing. Regarding pulses: extremely tight leads to Kidney Wei (atrophy) and Jia masses; slightly tight leads to Chen Jue (deep reversal) and Ben Tun (running piglet), with legs unable to support; extremely slack leads to broken spine; slightly slack leads to Dong Xie (cavity diarrhea) where food is not digested and vomited back out; extremely large leads to impotence; slightly large leads to Shi Shui (Stone Water) starting from below the navel to the lower abdomen, swelling upwards to the epigastrium, which is fatal and untreatable. Very small leads to cavity diarrhea; very minute leads to Xiao Dao (wasting-thirst); very slippery leads to Long Bi (dysuria); slightly slippery leads to Gu Wei (bone atrophy), inability to rise from sitting, and visual hallucinations; very choppy leads to severe obstruction; slightly choppy leads to amenorrhea, Luo Li (scrofula), and hemorrhoids. Regarding pulse arrival: upper part hard and large with pus Qi located in the yin region and abdomen is named Ren Bi (Kidney Bi), caused by bathing in cold water then lying down. Pulse deep, large, and hard, floating and tight, suffering from hand/foot bone swelling, Yin-Jiao impotence unable to rise, back pain, lower abdominal swelling, sub-cardiac water Qi causing fullness and cavity diarrhea; these result from bathing in water and engaging in intercourse before drying. Deficiency dreams of drowning people in boats; during its season, dreams of submerging in water with fear. Excess dreams of waist/spine separation. Jue pathogens lodging in the Kidney dream of approaching deep water and jumping in. Kidney distension causes abdominal pain/fullness radiating to the back, lumbar Bi pain. Kidney disease worsens at midnight, peaks during the four seasons, and quiets in the late afternoon. Kidney illness causes hot mouth, dry tongue, swollen throat, upward Qi, dry throat, vexation/pain, jaundice, Chang Pi (intestinal dysentery), Wei Jue (impotence/reversal cold), urgent pain in waist/spine/back, lethargy, hot/painful soles, soreness. Chronic cases lead to leg tendon pain, urinary closure, flank distension, support/fullness; blindness indicates death. Kidney Accumulation (Ji) causes pulling pain in waist/spine, worsening when hungry, improving when full; this is Cold-Knot in the Lower Abdomen within the Kidney. The general rule for Accumulations is a pulse that is fine, soft, and adherent to the bone. Black face with white eyes indicates internal Kidney injury, death in eight days. Retraction of the yin organ, inability to urinate, or difficult urination also indicate death. Green-yellow complexion extending to both sides of the ears in a thirty-year-old indicates death in one hundred days; if unilateral, death in one month. Excess causes vexation/stuffiness, heaviness below the navel. Heat causes dry/scorched mouth/tongue, scanty yellow urine. Cold causes pain in yin and waist/spine, black face, dry ears, hiccups/refusal to eat, or hematemesis. Hoarse voice, sitting wheezing/coughing, expectoration of blood also indicate Kidney Deficiency and impending Cold exhaustion. Once Cold, Heat, Excess, and Deficiency are clarified, detailed regulation and rescue constitute the path to perfect recovery.
