The Stomach is a fu-organ. It is also known as the "Sea of Water and Grain." It forms an exterior-interior relationship with the Spleen. The Stomach is the root of human life. When Stomach Qi is strong, the five zang organs and six fu organs are all strong. The Foot-Yangming Meridian is its channel. If Stomach Qi is exhausted, death occurs in five days. Excess patterns manifest as abdominal distension, difficult defecation, pain in limbs and joints, inability to eat, and incessant vomiting. Deficiency patterns manifest as borborygmus, abdominal fullness, desire for water, and loose stools. Cold patterns manifest as abdominal pain and inability to consume cold foods. Heat patterns manifest as a red face like that of a drunkard, inability to support the limbs, inability to lie down peacefully, delirious speech, manic behavior, visual disturbances, and hard stool. In severe cases, there is abdominal and hypochondriac distension, regurgitation preventing food intake, heart pain, obstruction of upper and lower qi flow, aversion to the smell of food, dislike of people speaking, chills, and frequent yawning. Heat in the Stomach causes black lips; extreme heat causes climbing high and singing, discarding clothes and running, erratic madness, sweating on the forehead, and incessant epistaxis. Extreme deficiency causes swelling of the four limbs, shortness of breath in the chest, and undigested food, which is called Zhong Xiao (Middle Jiao Consumption). Wind invading the Stomach leads to persistent diarrhea. Insufficient Stomach Qi leads to frequent hunger but indigestion. If the area below the patient's nose is flat, it indicates disease in the Stomach. Thirst is difficult to treat. (Another version omits "upper thirteen characters," stating that slight dryness with thirst is treatable.)
The Stomach pulse, if firm and long, with a yellow-red complexion, indicates lumbar pain (or thigh pain). A soft and scattered pulse indicates Shi Bi (Food Obstruction). At the left Guan position, a floating and large pulse indicates deficiency; floating and choppy indicates excess; floating and slightly slippery also indicates deficiency; floating and slow indicates cold; floating and rapid indicates excess. Observing these methods of distinguishing excess, deficiency, cold, heat, life, and death carefully and prudently leads to divine efficacy.
The Lung is the residence of the Po (Corporeal Soul) and the source of Sheng Qi (Vital Energy). It is titled the "Supreme General" and is the Hu Gai (Canopy) of the five zang organs. It nourishes the skin and hair externally and enriches the intestines and stomach internally. It forms an exterior-interior relationship with the Large Intestine. the Hand-Taiyin Meridian is its channel. Lung Qi connects to the nose; when harmonious, one can distinguish odors. Cold causes frequent coughing. (Original text: illness causes liking to cough.) Excess manifests as clear nasal discharge. All excess, deficiency, cold, and heat patterns cause wheezing and coughing. Excess patterns involve dreaming of weapons and fear, shoulder breathing, and chest fullness. Deficiency patterns generate cold sensations (or heat), coughing (or wheezing), diarrhea, shortness of breath, lack of strength, and excessive sadness. The Lung prospers in Autumn. Its normal pulse is floating and feathery. A floating and choppy pulse is also a Lung pulse. If the pulse arrives feathery but firm in the center and empty at both ends (or sides), it is termed "Excessive," indicating disease in the exterior. If the pulse arrives feathery and slight, it is termed "Insufficient," indicating disease in the interior. Excess causes qi rebellion, chest fullness, and back pain. Insufficiency causes wheezing, coughing, ascending qi, hemoptysis, and pathological sounds heard from below. Additionally, a gentle and minute Lung pulse like falling elm seeds is normal; coming and going without rising or falling, like touching a chicken feather, indicates disease; arriving like a floating object or wind blowing bird feathers, is a death pulse. A true Lung pulse that is large and empty, or like feathers piercing the skin, with a red color and broken hair, indicates death. A slight feathery pulse is normal; too much feathery quality indicates disease; feathery with dizziness indicates spring illness; severe dizziness indicates immediate illness. Additionally, Lung disease with hematemesis/epistaxis, hot skin, rapid pulse, and red cheeks indicates death. Long-term coughing with blood, body heat, and shortness of breath should have a choppy pulse; if it is instead floating and large, and the color should be white but is instead red, this is Fire overcoming Metal, resulting in ten deaths with no cure. Lung disease with wheezing and coughing, body cold without heat, and a slow, minute pulse is treatable. In Autumn, the Lung prospers; the pulse should be floating, choppy, and short for normalcy; if it is instead flooding, large, and long, this is Fire punishing Metal, also untreatable. A soft and slippery pulse indicates Kidney overacting on Lung, healing spontaneously. A floating, large, and slow pulse indicates Spleen generating Lung, healing without treatment. A wiry and long pulse indicates Lung being subdued by Liver, representing minor pathogenic factors; although diseased, it is not harmful. Deficiency causes inability to breathe, heavy ears, dry throat, wheezing, coughing, ascending qi, and chest/back pain. Accumulation causes hypochondriac distension. Wind-stroke causes dry mouth and wheezing, heavy body movement, sweating, and fainting. The pulse, pressed weakly like a scallion leaf, with no root below, indicates death. Internal heat causes spitting blood. Pulses that are fine, tight, floating, rapid, knotted, or slippery all indicate blood loss diseases, caused by dryness, agitation, anger, and labor injury leading to qi stagnation. Lung distension causes wheezing, coughing, and eyes protruding like dislocation, with a floating and large pulse. Lung Wei (Flaccidity) causes spitting saliva and foam, with dry throat and desire to drink; drinking indicates recovery, not drinking indicates non-recovery. Coughing with urinary incontinence indicates upper deficiency failing to control the lower. A deep and turbid pulse indicates internal disease; a floating and clear pulse indicates external disease. Lung death manifests as open, black, and withered nostrils, wheezing, and fixed staring eyes. Lung exhaustion leads to death in twelve days, with symptoms of swollen feet, involuntary diarrhea, pale face, and blue eyes, termed "Chaotic Channels," which is uncurable despite fate. Drinking alcohol in the wind, striking the Lung, causes coughing, wheezing, and oppression; those with blood are untreatable, those without blood are treatable. Yellow face and white eyes are treatable. Red cheeks in Lung disease indicate death. Rapid speech, wheezing, shortness of breath, and frequent spitting (or sleeping) indicate harm by true ghosts, a sign of great reversal and inevitable death. Yang qi ascending without descending, burning the Lung, causing self-binding of pathogenic factors, distension, wheezing, delirium, closed eyes, abnormal speech, open mouth and nose, distension of head and bowels/bladder, and unlimited water intake, results from heat injuring the Lung transforming into blood, which is untreatable, leading to death in half a year. Lung Malaria causes heart coldness; severe cold leads to fever; alternating cold and heat, irregular attacks, frequent fright, coughing, and wheezing with visual hallucinations. Pulses that are floating and tight, slippery and rapid, or slow, choppy, and small are all Lung Malaria pulses. A person whose voice is usually clear and robust suddenly becoming hoarse, straining to speak, difficult to articulate, and unable to move their eyes, though not yet ill, will not live long. Lung excess manifests as upper body wheezing and urgency, coughing, body heat, and large pulse. Deficiency manifests as lack of strength, panting, right hypochondriac distension, and short speech (or urgency). Alternating cold and heat, nasal congestion, red chin, and pale face are all signs of Lung disease.
