Flying frost and rolling hail. Dimness at dawn and dusk. Clouds and rain drifting, wind and dew cold. When it should be hot, it is not hot; before it should be cold, it becomes cold. The seasonal climate is continuous heavy rain, springs emerge in fields, mountains collapse, the earth cracks, soil crumbles, and rivers overflow.
The moon is dark (on the last day of the lunar month), the sun is dim. This is the Yin Jue (Yin Reversal Syndrome) of Heaven and Earth. Sudden aphonia and abrupt chills, whole-body stiffness, limbs curled and contracted, cyanotic lips, blackish complexion, fixed gaze, clenched jaw, abdominal fullness and pain, trembling of the head and chin, heaviness in the waist and legs, slurred speech, vomiting and diarrhea, numbness on both sides of the body, normal or abnormal urination and defecation, regurgitation of sour fluid, sorrow and grief, unpredictable mood swings. This is the Yin Jue (Yin Reversal Syndrome) of humans.
The pulse of Yin Jue: if it feels weak upon light pressure (Ju) but large upon heavy pressure (An), the prognosis is good; if it is imperceptible under both light and heavy pressure, the prognosis is fatal. If the whole body is completely cold and sweat spontaneously flows from the forehead, this is also fatal. For Yin Jue disease, do not treat it after three days have passed.
When Yang Qi moves upward but cannot descend, it is called Pi (Obstruction/Stagnation). When Yin Qi moves downward but cannot ascend, it is also called Pi. When Yang Qi moves downward but cannot ascend, it is called Ge (Rejection/Blockage). When Yin Qi moves upward but cannot descend, it is also called Ge. "Pi and Ge" refer to the failure of Yin and Yang Qi to follow and coordinate with each other. When Yang rushes to the upper part, it causes burning heat, leading to Ju (deep-seated abscesses/carbuncles) in the Spleen and Lungs. The color is yellow-red, all arising from extreme Yang (Yang Excess). When Yin wanders to the lower part, it causes freezing cold, leading to Jue (Cold Reversal Syndrome) in the Kidneys and Liver. The color is blue-black, all arising from extreme Yin (Yin Excess). Here, "Ju" refers to Jaundice (specifically Yellow Jaundice), and "Jue" refers to Cold Jue. These arise from the obstruction and blockage of Yin and Yang Qi. Burning Yang is treated with Water (Cooling/Clearing methods); Cold Jue is assisted by Fire (Warming/Moxibustion methods). This is the way of mutual assistance between Yin and Yang.
What is the disease causing alternating chills and fever in humans? This is due to the mutual victory and defeat of Yin and Yang. If Yang is insufficient, there are chills first followed by fever; if Yin is insufficient, there is fever first followed by chills. Furthermore, excess in the Upper Jiao causes fever; excess in the Lower Jiao causes chills. Cold skin with dryness indicates insufficient Yang; hot skin with dryness indicates insufficient Yin. Cold skin with a sensation of cold indicates excess Yin; hot skin with a sensation of heat indicates excess Yang. Fever originating in the lower part is an Yang pathogen within Yin; fever originating in the upper part is an Yang pathogen within Yang. Cold originating in the upper part is a Yin pathogen within Yang; cold originating in the lower part is a Yin pathogen within Yin. Chills with red cheeks and excessive talking indicate a Yin pathogen within Yang; fever with a bluish complexion and excessive talking indicate an Yang pathogen within Yin; chills with a bluish complexion and excessive talking indicate a Yin pathogen within Yin. If the patient does not speak, it is untreatable.
In cases of "Yin within Yin," one survives out of ten; in cases of "Yang within Yang," nine survive out of ten. Yin diseases are difficult to treat; Yang diseases are easy to cure. Upon examining the pulse: rapid pulse in the upper position indicates Yang within Yang; rapid pulse in the lower position indicates Yang within Yin; slow pulse in the upper position indicates Yin within Yang; slow pulse in the lower position indicates Yin within Yin. Rapid pulse in the middle position indicates Heat in the Middle Jiao; slow pulse in the middle position indicates Cold in the Middle Jiao. Cold is treated with Heat methods; Heat is attacked with Cold methods. The principles of reversal and compliance follow Heaven and Earth, rooted in Yin and Yang. Heaven and Earth are the parents of humans; Yin and Yang are the root of humans. None exist without following the Yin and Yang of Heaven and Earth. Those who comply live; those who oppose die. [Note: The text states "Cold again with cold, heat again with heat results in life," which may refer to specific counter-treatment scenarios or extreme conditions where the true nature is revealed, though literally translated as applying the same nature]. The *Da Yao Lun* of the *Jin Gui* states: Chills occurring at night are compliant (Shun); fever occurring at night is opposing (Ni). Fever occurring during the day is compliant; chills occurring during the day are opposing. The signs of compliance and opposition must be carefully examined and clarified.
