Treats conditions where the eye develops a nebula (corneal opacity), red veins (conjunctival hyperemia), pterygium (fleshy growth over the cornea), dryness and astringency, itching, pain, and tearing.
Baisha Mi (White Sand Honey) (4 liang) Qingyan (Green Salt) (1 zi) Shexiang (Musk) (1 zi) Ruxiang (Frankincense) Zhusha (Cinnabar) (0.5 zi) Danggui (Angelica Sinensis) (0.5 qian) Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) (1 qian) Baijian (Alum) (0.5 zi)
The above eight ingredients are lightly ground in a mortar until broken down, placed inside a green bamboo tube, and boiled for half a day. The liquid is filtered through cotton cloth to remove dregs and stored in a porcelain bottle. When applying the medicine, close the eyes for a short while, then wash with warm water; the nebula and other symptoms will recede.
Treats external obstructions (external eye diseases), removes nebulae, treats wind-toxin attacking upwards causing eye pain, redness, and swelling, or eyelid itching and ulceration, frequent hot tears, and blurred vision with dryness. This formula is highly effective.
Huai Nenzhiya (Young Branches and Buds of Sophora Japonica) (30 pieces: harvested in mid-spring, stored in a cellar until dry; if unavailable, fresh tender branches may be used) Longnao (Borneol) (a small amount) Gudan (Lead Oxide/Minium) (finely ground first, stir-fried, 2 da qian) Xuanlian (Coptis Chinensis from Xuanzhou, solid quality, 7 pieces, each about 2.5 cun long) Wuyu Gu (Cuttlefish Bone) (water-processed, stir-fried, 2 qian) Baisha Mi (White Sand Honey) (4 liang) Qingfen (Calomel) (stir-fried, 3 qian) Ruxiang (Frankincense, bright and clean, weighed at approximately 1 qian)
First, boil the Huai branches and Huanglian in one and a half bowls of snow water, or well water is also acceptable, using silver or ceramic vessels over slow fire. Boil until reduced to about half a bowl, then filter out the dregs. Next, add the finely ground Ruxiang and continue boiling. When reduced to the amount of a tea spoon, separately boil the honey to remove impurities, let it cool, then add the previously prepared paste and all the powdered ingredients. Stir evenly and boil again until it reaches a consistency resembling golden lacquer. Store in a water-proof ceramic vessel. Apply a small amount to the eyes; the effect is excellent.
Removes fleshy growths (pterygium) and clears nebulae.
Xuanlian (Coptis Chinensis) (4 liang) Ruiren (Prunus Persica Kernel/Bai Lan Ye Ren) (0.5 liang) Xingren (Apricot Seed) (49 grains) Jinzhou Bai (Cypress from Jinzhou) (3 liang: crush the above two ingredients, soak in two bowls of water overnight, boil in a vessel to extract half a bowl, and filter)
First, remove the tips and double skins from the Xingren. Remove the skin from the Ruiren by chewing/masticating, then grind both together into a powder. Add this powder to the previously extracted medicinal juice and boil until reduced to one large bowl. Filter again. Add good honey and nine fen of the remaining medicinal powders. Add Shexiang (Musk) (1 qian), Baijian (Alum) (1 zi), Zhusha (Cinnabar, water-processed) (1 zi), Kongqing (Azurite) (3 qian). If Kongqing is unavailable, use raw Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis) instead, slightly crushed. Place Longnao (Borneol) (2 qian) in a silk bag and put it into the medicine. Boil again until reduced by half. Test by dropping the liquid into cold water; when the drops do not disperse on the water surface, it is ready. Store in a small bottle, sealed tightly. Steam the bottle three times over a rice steamer, cooling it in a well after each steaming. Once cooled, store in porcelain or silver vessels. Apply as usual. The therapeutic effects are too numerous to describe completely.
