[Jinzhen Wan] Treats Jie Xiong syndrome (a condition where pathogenic heat and phlegm-fluids bind in the chest and diaphragm) caused by Shang Han (Cold Damage), characterized by rebellious Qi, coldness of the hands and feet, and incessant vomiting.
Yangqishi (Stalactite), Buhui Mu (Fossil Wood), Awèi (Asafoetida) (each 0.5 liang); Badou (Croton Seed) (25 grains, peeled and cored, oil not removed); Xingren (Apricot Seed) (25 pieces, peeled and tips removed).
The above five ingredients are ground together into a fine powder. Soft millet rice is used as a binder to form pills the size of a bullet. For each dose, take one pill, pierce a hole through it, burn it over a lamp until the smoke ceases, grind the residue into powder, and mix with ginger and rice water for administration. Efficacy is indicated by bowel movement.
[Xianmao Wan] Treats Shang Han Jie Xiong syndrome and severe adverse conditions; it is highly effective.
Xianmao (Curculigo Rhizome) (1 fen); Guanzhong (Cyrtomium Rhizome) (0.5 liang); Hei Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root, black variety) (0.5 liang, peeled); Bibá (Long Pepper Fruit) (1 fen); Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) (0.5 liang); Gancao (Licorice Root) (a small amount); Badou (Croton Seed) (peeled).
The above seven ingredients are ground together into a fine powder. Wheat paste is used as a binder to form pills the size of Sophora seeds. To treat Jie Xiong, administer one pill with ginger and jujube decoction. For patients who have been ill for five to seven days, break open an additional pill and administer it with the same decoction. For ordinary Shang Han, swallow with cool fermented grain water. If diarrhea occurs after administration, it is necessary to take mild Qi-regulating and exterior-releasing herbs; recovery follows sweating.
[Renshen San] Treats Shang Han, harmonizes stomach and spleen Qi, warms the middle warmer, and calms the spirit and soul. (To be taken within five days of onset.)
Renshen (Ginseng Root); Fuling (Poria); Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome, soaked overnight in rice washing water); Chenjupi (Aged Tangerine Peel) (each 1 liang).
The above four ingredients are pounded into a fine powder. Each dose consists of 2 qian, boiled with 1 zhong of water and two slices of fresh ginger until reduced to 6/10 of the original volume. Take warm. Administer three times daily.
[Shunqi San] Treats disharmony of stomach and spleen Qi due to Shang Han, symptoms before and after sweating such as vomiting, rebellious Qi, abdominal distension, stabbing pain from deficient Qi attacking, heart and hypochondriac pain, and also treats cough. (Refer to Luo Shi's *Shanghan Jiusu Fang*.)
Noupu (Magnolia Bark, coarse skin removed, stir-fried with ginger juice until yellow); Huixiang (Fennel Fruit, stir-fried); Chenpi (Tangerine Peel, soaked, pith removed, dried); Cangzhu (Atractylodes Lancea Rhizome, soaked overnight in rice washing water, stir-fried); Zhiqiao (Bitter Orange Fruit, soaked in water, pith removed, stir-fried with bran until yellow); Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome, stir-fried); Jiegeng (Platycodon Root); Xingren (Apricot Seed, peeled, tips removed, stir-fried); Baizhi (Angelica Dahurica Root, stir-fried); Gancao (Licorice Root, honey-fried or roasted); Mahuang (Ephedra Stem, joints removed).
Each ingredient is taken in equal proportions, ground into powder. Xingren is ground separately and then mixed uniformly with the other powders. Each dose is 2 qian, boiled with three cun of green onion white, two slices of ginger, and one jujube until reduced to 7/10 of the volume. Take hot. This formula is very effective in regulating Qi deficiency after sweating in Shang Han. In cases where patients exhibit coldness of the finger and toe joints, vomiting, nausea, and signs of Yin Du Shang Han (Yin Toxic Cold Damage), urgent administration of three to five doses will naturally restore Yang, regulate Qi, and induce sweating. If the patient feels body heat but sweating does not occur after prolonged time, combine with Jinfei San to release the exterior. For elderly patients with Shang Han, regardless of Yin or Yang Du, first administer Shunqi San for three to five doses, then administer Jinfei San to induce sweating and release the exterior. For young and strong patients with Yang Du, first release the exterior and induce sweating, then use this formula to regulate Qi. It is also suitable for those afflicted by wind, rain, and dampness.
