Chen Feixia stated: In children, wind-phlegm obstruction can lead to a state of coma and unresponsiveness where medicinal decoctions cannot be administered, and even moxibustion fails to elicit pain sensation. This is fundamentally due to phlegm turbidity blocking the large collaterals of the Spleen (Pi), thereby截ting off the pathways for the ascending and descending of Yin and Yang Qi. Although the condition is critical, one should urgently take fresh Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii (Sheng Changpu), fresh Folium Artemisiae Argyi (Sheng Aiye), fresh Radix Zingiberis Recens (Sheng Jiang), and fresh Allii Fistulosi (Sheng Cong), each in a handful, and pound them together in a mortar until they form a paste. Stir-fry this mixture with sesame oil and original vinegar until hot, wrap it in cloth, and apply hot compresses downward from the head, neck, chest, back, and limbs. The phlegm will then dissipate, and the patient will naturally regain consciousness. This prescription is suitable for treating children and is equally effective for adults. It is effective for all types of Obstruction syndromes (Bi Zheng).
Chen Feixia stated: When children suffer from phlegm-induced cough and asthma with Qi rising but not descending, producing a sawing sound in the throat, it is essential to guide the Qi downward, which is the most appropriate method. Take one tael of raw Alum (Sheng Baifan), grind it into powder, and mix it with one tael of wheat flour (rice flour may also be used). Blend with original vinegar to form a cake; the alum dissolves upon contact with vinegar, while the flour provides adhesiveness. In winter cold weather, warm the cake by steaming before application. Apply it to both soles of the feet, wrap with cloth, and leave overnight; the phlegm will naturally descend.
Chen Feixia stated: If children have cold-phlegm in the chest leading to sudden coma, and upon waking they vomit phlegm resembling mung bean starch—thick and greenish in color—this indicates phlegm generated by Cold. Previous methods are ineffective for resolving this type of phlegm. Instead, use one raw Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Sheng Fuzi) and one tael of fresh Radix Zingiberis Recens (Sheng Jiang), pound them together until mashed, stir-fry until hot, wrap in cloth, and apply hot compresses to the back and chest. After compressing, knead the ginger and aconite into a cake and apply it to the chest area; over time, the phlegm will naturally disperse.
Chen Feixia stated: In cases of pediatric collapse with rapid breathing and floating/scattered True Qi, during the critical moment of impending death when all medicines fail, use 5 fen of Fructus Evodiae (Wuzhuyu), 7 grains of Piperis Longi (Hujiao), and 1 qian of Fructus Myrabolanae (Wubeizi). Grind these into an extremely fine powder, blend with wine to form a cake, fill the umbilicus (Shenque, CV8), and secure tightly with a bandage; the Qi will naturally flow smoothly.
Chen Feixia stated: Sudden coldness of the hands and feet in children is generally caused by exterior pathogens obstructing the meridians, or wind-phlegm hindering the Ying and Wei (Nutritive and Defensive) Qi, or alternatively, Yang Qi failing to reach the four extremities after a severe illness. Quickly roast fresh Radix Zingiberis Recens (Sheng Jiang) until cooked, crush it to extract half a small cup of juice, mix slightly with sesame oil, dip fingers into the mixture, and massage both palms and soles. Combine with rubbing to unblock the meridians. Once warmth returns, wipe clean with paper. This method is effective regardless of whether the syndrome is Yin or Yang, Deficiency or Excess.
