The infant's eyes are red and swollen due to heat accumulation in the Liver Meridian (Liver Channel) internally, combined with an external invasion of Wind Pathogen (Wind Evil), which is termed Fenghuo Yan (Wind-Fire Eye). Internal treatment should focus on dispersing and releasing. As the classics state: "For fire depression, use dispersion," which is exactly this principle.

Manipulation techniques: Fen Yin Yang (Divide Yin and Yang) (300 times), Tui Bu Shen Shui (Push to Tonify Kidney Water) (500 times), Tui Liu Fu (Retreat the Six Fu Organs) (500 times), Tui Pi Tu (Push Spleen Earth) (100 times), Tui Tian He Shui (Push Heavenly River Water) (500 times), Yun Ba Gua (Rotate the Eight Trigrams) (200 times), Shui Di Lao Ming Yue (Fishing for the Bright Moon at the Bottom of the Water) (100 times), Qia He Gu (Pinch Hegu Point LI4) (24 times), Tui Qu Chi (Push Quchi Point LI11) (36 times). All pushing manipulations should use Cong Shui (Scallion Juice) as a medium.

Commentary: Eye diseases have specialized disciplines, and the syndromes and treatments are very complex. Generally, they are divided into two categories: Nei Zhang (Internal Obstruction) and Wai Zhang (External Obstruction). Fenghuo Yan (Wind-Fire Eye) is merely one syndrome within the External Obstruction category. I encountered a patient suffering from Fenghuo Yan (Wind-Fire Eye) by the seaside who had even gone blind and sought my diagnosis. Upon inquiry, I learned that when the disease first appeared, a physician prescribed Da Huang (Rhubarb Root and Rhizome) for him. The forcing action of bitter-cold herbs contradicted the classic teaching of "dispersing fire depression," leading to this outcome. Those responsible for saving lives must differentiate syndromes to identify the disease and establish appropriate treatment methods to confront the pathology directly. It is regrettable that mediocre practitioners do not seek ancient medical teachings but act rashly, resulting in countless people dying at the hands of physicians rather than from their diseases. The degradation of medical skills has reached an unknown depth; how lamentable! (Tili Zi)

The navel, which is the root and vital essence of infants, is named Shen Que (Spiritual Reservoir). This acupoint is close to the Three Yin Meridians of the Foot; it prefers warmth and dislikes cold, prefers dryness and dislikes dampness. If the umbilical cord is cut properly, how could Qi Feng (Newborn Tetanus/Wind entering the navel) arise? Only when Qi (energy/pathogens) of water-dampness, wind, and cold enters the navel will the infant necessarily experience abdominal distension and navel swelling, crying day and night; this is the initial onset of Qi Feng (Newborn Tetanus/Wind entering the navel). If yellow color suddenly appears at the corners of the eyes and between the eyebrows, it is a sign of Qi Feng (Newborn Tetanus/Wind entering the navel), requiring urgent treatment. If the yellow color spreads to the nose, treatment is still relatively easy; if it reaches Ren Zhong (GV26) and Cheng Jiang (CV24), it becomes difficult. Even if mouth locking (trismus), lip tightness, and head rigidity occur, it is incurable. However, the initial signs of Qi Feng (Newborn Tetanus/Wind entering the navel) always appear within three days after birth, manifesting as a stiff tongue, closed eyes, foaming at the mouth, inability to cry, and hard nodules on the left and right gums, appearing blue, yellow, or white, resembling chicken or fish cartilage, or white spots the size of millet grains. One must urgently use a silver needle to puncture the gum nodules and the yellow-white spots. Then, dip a green cloth in water, wring it out, and apply ink juice. For internal treatment, decoct Fang Feng (Saposhnikovia Root) 1 qian and administer orally.

Manipulation techniques: Fen Yin Yang (Divide Yin and Yang) (70 times), Tui San Guan (Push Three Gates) (50 times), Tui Liu Fu (Retreat the Six Fu Organs) (70 times), Yun Ba Gua (Rotate the Eight Trigrams) (50 times), Tui Fei Jing (Push Lung Meridian) (50 times), Rou Wai Lao Gong (Knead Outer Laogong) (200 times). All pushing manipulations should use Cong Jiang Tang (Scallion and Ginger Decoction) as a medium. Deng Huo Jiu (Moxibustion with Lamp Oil) method: Apply one moxa cone each to the infant's Fontanelle (Baihui area), Meixin (between eyebrows), Ren Zhong (GV26), Cheng Jiang (CV24), and Shaoshang (LU11) on both thumbs. Apply six cones around the navel ring. If the umbilical cord has not yet fallen off, apply one cone at the base of the cord; if it has fallen off, apply one cone at the navel pit. Total thirteen cones. Areas where green veins cross on the abdomen are also suitable for application. (See Volume 2, Page 30.)

Commentary: Qi Feng (Newborn Tetanus/Wind entering the navel) often arises from careless umbilical cord cutting. Xia Yuzhu believed that wind enters the abdomen, attaches to the Liver, and since the Liver opens into the eyes, yellow appears at the eye corners; Liver Wood overacts on Spleen Earth, so yellow appears at the nasal tip. Eventually, pathogens enter the Kidney and Heart, causing mouth puckering and tongue stiffness. If treated early, with lamp oil moxibustion as the key, recovery can be expected. (Tili Zi)

E Kou (Goose Mouth/Thrush) occurs in newborns. White debris appears inside the mouth; if wiped away, it regenerates. In severe cases, the entire tongue is covered with layered swellings, resembling a goose's mouth, unable to open and close fully, with no voice when crying, and difficulty feeding. It may also grow on the upper and lower gums, named Ma Ya (Horse Teeth). All these are caused by Heat-Toxin accumulating in the Heart and Spleen during fetal development and attacking upwards. Medicinal treatment should focus on clearing heat and purging the Spleen.

Manipulation techniques: Tui Shi Zhi San Guan (Push the Three Gates of the Index Finger) (100 times), Tui Liu Fu (Retreat the Six Fu Organs) (100 times), Fen Yin Yang (Divide Yin and Yang) (36 times), Lao Ming Yue (Retrieve the Bright Moon) (36 times), Da Ma Guo Tian He (Beat the Horse Across the Heavenly River) (36 times).

Use the blunt end of a silver hairpin to scrape the gums until bleeding occurs, wipe clean with soft silk, and apply aged ink juice. Dip hair in well water to wipe the mouth. Then, mix Bai Fan (Alum) calcined to ash 2 qian, Zhu Sha (Cinnabar) water-flowered 2 qian, and Ma Ya Xiao (Niter) 5 qian into powder. Stir with water from white goose feces to extract the juice, and apply to the tongue and corners of the mouth for cure.

Commentary: The syndrome of E Kou (Goose Mouth/Thrush) results from the fetus being affected by the heat-toxin of the mother's diet, accumulating in the Heart and Spleen. Thus, shortly after birth, it manifests in the mouth and tongue. Internal treatment focuses on clearing heat and purging the Spleen; external treatments such as those listed above are sufficient. If treatment is not sought urgently, the mouth and tongue will become eroded, preventing suckling, making survival unlikely. (Tili Zi)
