Figure of Moving the Outer Eight Trigrams
This method primarily serves to unblock Qi and blood, and open up constipation. With the child's hand back facing upward, the physician uses the right thumb to move starting from the "Qian" palace, applying slightly lighter pressure when reaching the "Li" palace, and continuing through the Li palace as with the other palaces.
Figures of Moving Water into Earth and Moving Earth into Water
This method treats disorders of the Kidney and Spleen. With the child's palm facing upward, the physician dips the pad of the right thumb in ginger and scallion soup, moving from the "Kidney Water" palace, passing along the edges of the "Qian", "Kan", and "Gen" palaces, and stopping at the "Spleen Earth" palace. This is called "Moving Water into Earth" and is used to treat dysentery. Starting from the "Spleen Earth" palace, passing along the edges of the "Gen", "Kan", and "Qian" palaces, and stopping at the "Kidney Water" palace is called "Moving Earth into Water", which is used to treat diarrhea.
Jing Feng (Convulsions) arises from the Heart (Shen disturbance), while Feng (Wind) arises from the Liver. When children have excessive heat, it generates Wind; when Wind is excessive, it generates Phlegm; when Phlegm is excessive, it generates Jing (startle/convulsion). Excessive Jing leads to extension and flexion of the elbows and arms; the opening and closing of the ten fingers is called "Nuo" (clamping); shoulder movements resembling a wrestling match are called "Che" (twitching); shaking of the hands and feet is called "Chan" (trembling); the body arching backward is called "Fan" (opisthotonos); hands resembling a drawn bow are called "Yin" (drawing); eyes staring straight as if angry are called "Cuan" (darting); eyes showing whites and appearing lifeless are called "Shi" (gazing). These eight manifestations constitute the "Eight Signs" of Jing Feng. To treat Jing Feng, one must first resolve Phlegm; to resolve Phlegm, one must first expel Wind; to expel Wind, one must first clear Heat; and to clear Heat, one must distinguish whether the pathogenic factor is external Wind, Cold, Summerheat, Dampness, Dryness, or Fire. Only after distinguishing these can they be eliminated. Jing Feng is divided into two categories: Acute Jing Feng and Chronic Jing Feng. Their symptoms differ, and so do their treatment methods.
Acute Jing Feng typically presents with sudden onset, high fever, restlessness, red face and lips, copious phlegm with rapid breathing, locked jaw, and difficulty in urination and defecation. This may be caused by obstruction due to Wind-Cold stagnation, blockage by Heat pathogens, or Phlegm stagnation in the meridians.
Pinch and knead Hegu LI4 (thirty-six times). Pinch and knead the tip of the middle finger (twenty-four times). Pinch and knead Weiling BL57 (fifty times). Divide Yin and Yang (three hundred times). Push San Guan (Three Gates) (two hundred times). Retreat Liu Fu (Six Palaces) (two hundred times). Push Shen Shui (Kidney Water) (one hundred times). Push Tian He Shui (Heavenly River Water) (two hundred times). Push Pi Tu (Spleen Earth), applying both tonifying and clearing techniques (one hundred times each). Push and tonify Fei Jing (Lung Meridian) (two hundred times). Move Wu Jing (Five Meridians) (twenty times). Pinch Wu Zhi Jie (Five Finger Joints) (twenty-six times). Yuan Hou Zhai Guo (Ape Plucking Fruit) (twenty times). Bite Kunlun BL60 (three times). Push San Yin (Three Yin) acupoint (for acute cases, push from top to bottom twenty-four times). Clear Tian He Shui (Heavenly River Water) (two hundred times). Rub Nei Lao Gong PC8 (two hundred times). Move Ba Gua (Eight Trigrams) (one hundred times).
For all pushing techniques, use green onion and pepper water. Then, mix clam powder with water and apply it to the center of the head, palms, soles, and Taiyang area. Temporarily withhold milk and food. Use sweating methods (see Volume 2, page 21), pulse-unblocking methods (see Volume 2, page 44). For cold patterns, use exterior-releasing methods (see Volume 2, page 37). For heat patterns, use interior-clearing methods (see Volume 2, page 38). For phlegm patterns, use opening-closure methods (see Volume 2, page 40).
Chronic Jing Feng presents with a cyan or pale complexion, cold limbs, coma, convulsions of the hands and feet, spiritless eyes, sleeping with eyes partially open, miserable expression, and greenish stool. This is generally caused by erroneous use of sweating or purging methods, leading to deficiency and failure of Spleen Earth.
Pinch Lao Long GV29 (three times). Moxibustion on Kunlun BL60 (three moxa cones). Divide Yin and Yang (two hundred times). Push San Guan (Two Hundred Times). Push Fei Jing (Lung Meridian) (two hundred times). Push Shen Shui (Kidney Water) (two hundred times). Push and tonify Pi Tu (Spleen Earth) (two hundred times). Pinch Wu Zhi Jie (Five Finger Joints) (twenty times). Move Wu Jing (Five Meridians) (thirty times). Move Ba Gua (Eight Trigrams) (one hundred times). Chi Feng Yao Tou (Red Phoenix Shaking Head) (twenty times). Er Long Xi Zhu (Two Dragons Playing with Pearls) (thirty times). Tian Men Ru Hu Kou (Heaven's Gate Entering Tiger's Mouth) (thirty times). Push San Yin (Three Yin) acupoint (for chronic cases, push from bottom to top). Rub Xiao Tian Xin (Minor Heavenly Heart) (two hundred times).
For all pushing techniques, use water infused with green onion, ginger, and musk. Use [a specific method] (see Volume 2, page 30). Use Qi-nourishing methods (see Volume 2, page 43). Use moxibustion (see Volume 2, page 26).
Note: Jing Feng was originally considered a common condition in children. However, recent practitioners have classified it into twenty-four types, later adding four more, and then several others, totaling over thirty types. The proliferation of names makes the theory increasingly absurd. Treatment should focus on resolving Phlegm to calm convulsions and expelling Wind to stop twitching, primarily aiming to eliminate pathogenic factors. Unfortunately, quacks and laypeople use needle-pricking of tendons to treat Jing Feng, misunderstanding "Jing" (startle/pathogen) as "Jin" (tendon). Because the tongue protrudes like a snake's tongue, it is named "Snake Silk". Because hands and feet flail like horse hooves, it is named "Horse Hoof". Because mouth movements resemble fish sucking water, it is named "Crucian Carp". If names were derived solely from physical manifestations, there would be countless names for Jing Feng. Xia Yu's casting of the "Bi Miu" (Correcting Errors) vessel was highly appropriate. I divide Jing Feng into two categories: Acute Jing Feng belongs to Yang, historically known as Yang Xian (Yang Epilepsy); Chronic Jing Feng belongs to Yin, historically known as Yin Xian (Yin Epilepsy). In this condition, the Central Earth (Spleen/Stomach) is already deficient, allowing Wind Wood (Liver) to move; prolonged duration leads to signs of fright, but essentially, it does not originate from actual fright. Unfortunately,世俗 people do not understand this; if a doctor does not recognize obscure names of Jing Feng, they are deemed incompetent. Therefore, one must know these various names to avoid ridicule by the vulgar eye. (Ti Li Zi)
