The *Suwen: Yin-Yang Yingxiang Dalun* (Great Treatise on the Correspondence of Yin and Yang in the Basic Questions) states: Heaven has the four seasons, which govern growth, flourishing, harvesting, and storing, thereby generating cold, heat, dryness, dampness, and wind. When these climatic factors—cold, heat, dryness, dampness, and wind—arise, if they occur in due season, all things grow; if they arise out of season, all things perish. Thus it is said: "Born of the four seasons, dying by the four seasons." It also says: "Humans have five zang organs, which transform into five qi, giving rise to joy, anger, worry, grief, and fear. When these emotions—joy, anger, worry, grief, and fear—are expressed, if they are moderate and within proper limits, the nine orifices function normally; if they are excessive and immoderate, the nine orifices fail. Thus it is said: 'Life originates from the five zang organs, death arises from the five zang organs.'" The eyes are one of the orifices. They possess brightness and vision, encompassing the vastness of mountains and rivers, as well as the minutiae of hairs and grains, perceiving the height of clouds and the depth of springs and sands, transforming the infinite into the finite, while the finite cannot exhaust the infinite, instead converging the gaze. Thus, the eyes open and close, move and rest, becoming a tiny point like a pool of clear water. Is this achieved through forceful effort? No, this is the natural way of continuous generation.
However, sometimes internal injury caused by the seven emotions (joy, anger, worry, thought, grief, fear, fright), external disturbance by the five thieves (pathogenic factors), irregular eating and drinking, and abnormal physical exertion occur. The Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian and the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian correspond to Wu Earth and Ji Earth, respectively, serving as the source of life's generation. The seven emotions and five thieves collectively injure these two meridians; irregular meals injure the stomach, while overexertion injures the spleen. Once Wu and Ji Earth are diseased, the natural body capable of continuous generation cannot perform its function of continuous generation, thus leading to illness, termed "Disease of Seven Emotions, Five Thieves, Exertion, and Irregular Meals." The symptoms include redness and pain in the eyeball, pain like needle pricks, involvement of the Taiyang channel, weakness of the eyelids with a constant desire to close them, inability to gaze for long periods, soreness upon prolonged gazing, formation of nebulae (corneal opacities), which often present as depressions. These depressions may be round, square, long, short, dot-like, thread-like, cone-shaped, or chisel-shaped. For cases presenting with these signs, Chaihu Fusheng Tang (Bupleurum Revitalizing Decoction) or Huanglian Yanggan Wan (Coptis Lamb Liver Pill) should be administered. For severe eye pain, Danggui Yangrong Tang (Angelica Nourishing Harmony Decoction), Zhuyang Huoxue Tang (Yang-Boosting Blood-Activating Decoction), Jiadi Dihuang Wan (Modified Rehmannia Pill), Jueming Yiyin Wan (Vision-Improving Yin-Nourishing Pill), or Huanglian Yanggan Wan modified with Danggui (Angelica) should be used. Longnao Huanglian Gao (Borneol Coptis Ointment) may also be applied. All the aforementioned formulas consist primarily of herbs that ascend and generate yang qi. Among them, herbs such as Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) are used to eliminate the pathogenic factors of the five thieves. Bibi Yun San (Nose Blue Cloud Powder) may also be utilized. One must strictly avoid agents containing Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas), Qianniu (Pharbitidis Semen), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), and Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus). Violating these contraindications will exacerbate the disease.
