Feng (31 years old) suffered from relapse due to overwork, presenting with malaria accompanied by bloody dysentery and abdominal pain. He was cured using Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) combined with Huangqin Tang (Scutellaria Decoction).
Codonopsis Radix (Dangshen), Atractylodis Rhizoma (Baizhu), Astragali Radix (Huangqi, stir-fried), Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Guizhi Sheng), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Jupi), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao), Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (Weimuxiang), Crataegi Fructus (Zharou), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata (Zhigancao).
This condition is characterized by excess deficiency and scanty pathogenic factors; thus, this treatment method yields efficacy. Otherwise, when malaria and dysentery occur simultaneously, using such formulas rarely avoids mishandling. In a case of a person with strong constitution where malaria and dysentery occur concurrently, Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) was modified with Coptidis Rhizoma (Chuanlian), Baishao, Zharou, and Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (N Houpo). After two doses, malaria ceased and dysentery decreased; after removing Chaihu and Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia) and administering two more doses, he recovered.
Sheng (61 years old) presented with loose stools, night sweats, weak legs, poor appetite, and abdominal distension. The pulse was wiry and choppy, indicating Liver Wood insulting Spleen Earth.
Prepared Atractylodis Rhizoma (Zheng Yuzhu), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Baishao), Poria (Fuling), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Jupi), Moutan Cortex (Danpi), Amomi Fructus Rotundus Shell (Sharen Qiao), Codonopsis Radix (Dangshen), Morus Folium (Sangye), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata (Zhigancao), Triticum Semen (Huaimai), Jujubae Fructus (Dazao).
He recovered after four doses.
Cao (34 years old) complained of chest stuffiness, loose stools, poor appetite, and abdominal distension. The left pulse was wiry and the right pulse soft, indicating Liver Wood invading Stomach Earth. The treatment method involved draining the Liver and unblocking the Fu organs. Jinlingzi San (Golden Bell Powder) was added with Fuling, Baishao, Trichosanthis Pericarpium (Gualou Pi), and fresh ginger.
Chen (21 years old) suffered from chronic diarrhea that did not stop, abdominal distension after eating, deafness, nyctalopia (night blindness), dry lips, and weak legs. The left pulse was fine and weak, and the right pulse was wiry, indicating hyperactive Liver Wood and deficient Spleen Earth. Due to strenuous labor, severe injury occurred. The approach should be to tonify the Spleen, overcome dampness, and harmonize the Liver.
Codonopsis Radix (Dangshen), Prepared Winter Atractylodis Rhizoma (Zheng Dongzhu), Poria (Fuling), Scorched Paeoniae Radix Alba (Jiaobaishao), Polyporus (Zhuling), Alisma Rhizoma (Zexie), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Jupi), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (N Houpo), Uncaria Ramulus cum Uncis (Gouteng), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata (Zhigancao).
Qian (20 years old) had tertian malaria lasting nearly a month. Ten days prior, morning diarrhea occurred. Symptoms included heavy heat and light chills, chest stuffiness, anorexia, a slightly rapid pulse in both wrists, and a slightly yellow tongue coating. This indicated pathogens occupying the Membrane Source (Moyuan) with sinking of Yang Qi. The treatment required separating and regulating.
Curcumae Longae Rhizoma (Chuan Yujin), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (N Houpo), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Jupi), Poria (Fuling), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Puerariae Lobatae Radix (Gegen).
After one dose, diarrhea stopped. After two more doses, symptoms lightened as if nonexistent. Previously, Tonifying the Middle and lifting methods had yielded immediate results, significantly increasing appetite. Now, only balancing Ying and Wei Qi is needed, along with careful diet, leading to quick recovery.
Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Jupi), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (N Houpo), Poria (Fuling), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Jujubae Fructus (Hongzao).
Recorded by Tuian: In the seventh month of the Jiyou year of Qianlong, I suffered from limb weakness and fatigue, aversion to wind with shivering, tenesmus, and loose stools. This was caused by downward pressure of Large Intestine Qi due to non-dispersal of Lung Qi. The treatment required opening and unblocking the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian to ensure organ Qi flows freely, thereby facilitating Fu organ function without obstruction.
Almond Seed (Xingren, 3 qian), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng, 1 qian), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng, 1 qian), Tangerine Peel (Guangpi, 1 qian; these four open Lung Qi as Sovereign drugs), Hawthorn Fruit (Zharou, 3 qian), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 1.5 qian), Areca Seed (Binglang, 1 qian), Curcumae Longae Rhizoma (Yujin, 1.2 qian), Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (N Houpo, 1.5 qian; guides stagnation and opens Large Intestine Qi as Minister/Envoy drugs).
Recovered after one dose.
Huang (46 years old) presented with jaundice of the eyes, abdominal pain, diarrhea, coughing/wheezing, chest stuffiness, and inability to eat. This resulted from internal invasion of Damp-Heat and external attack of Wind-Cool on the Lungs. The treatment focused on releasing the exterior, clearing summerheat, and promoting urination.
Almond Seed (Xingren), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Menthae Haplocalycis Herba (Bohe), Peucedani Radix (Qianhu), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Gardeniae Fructus Nigra (Heizhi), Hawthorn Fruit (Zharou), Tangerine Peel (Guangpi), Poria (Fuling), Polyporus (Zhuling), Alisma Rhizoma (Zexie), Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang).
