The dragon lurks in the sea, and thunder hides in the marshes; thus the heaven is clear and the earth is tranquil. When they erupt, dark clouds surround the horizon, and flames illuminate the sky. The qi of heaven becomes obstructed, and the qi of earth obscures the light. This is what is called the "Fire of Dragon and Thunder" (Longlei Zhi Huo), which is so swift that it cannot be covered, its momentum rapid, violent, and terrifying. Once the wind calms and the rain clears, it has no way to exert its power. In humans, the throat (Hou) governs the qi of heaven (respiration), and the pharynx (Yan) governs the qi of earth (nutrition). They serve as the bellows (Tuoxi) within the body and the pathway for water and grain. If there were no wind and fire fanning each other, the empty metal would resonate, and the hollow valley would receive, so how could there be obstruction? Only when fire arises internally and wind stagnates externally, with turbulent waters gathering into phlegm (Tan), does it manifest externally as Wind-Throat (Houfeng), winding through the collaterals to the chest and diaphragm; or internally as Throat Bi (Houbi), blocking and knotting on both sides, causing pain such that food cannot enter and voice cannot emerge, with danger and death awaiting at any moment. At this time, if yin-cold herbs are administered, the condition will worsen, the fire will burn more fiercely, and the phlegm will become more abundant. It is urgent to dispel wind and resolve phlegm, opening up the stagnation, so that the entanglement is instantly released and the obstruction immediately opens. Therefore, for treating Houfeng, Silkworm (Jiangcan) and Pinellia (Banxia) are used as sovereign drugs, assisted by agents that regulate qi. For treating Houbi, Belamcanda (Shegan), Licorice (Gancao), and Platycodon (Jiegeng) are the main drugs, assisted by acrid-cool agents. By removing the wind, the fire naturally subsides; by dispelling the phlegm, the wind naturally calms. Even with the disturbance of the Minister Fire of Dragon and Thunder, what harm could there be? This is the key to treatment: first employ emesis (Tantu), then dispersion (Jie San), and in severe cases, follow-treatment (Cong Zhi - contrary treatment). Yan Yonghe's Honey-Candied Aconite Slices (Mijian Fuzi Pian) are to be sucked for their juice, because when Fire fails to return to its source (Huobu Guiyuan), leading to cold feet and faint pulse, indicating a critical state, they are used only out of necessity.
One type of Houbi, commonly known as Tonsillar Abscess (Rue'e), grows on both sides of the throat, appearing red-purple like a coin, with a yellow center like a bean. If present on only one side, it is called Single Tonsillar Abscess (Dan); if on both sides, Double Tonsillar Abscess (Shuang). Those above the fauces are visible, those below are not. It makes swallowing difficult, requiring immediate puncture and expectoration. Alternatively, use a goose feather dipped in lamp oil residue to stimulate vomiting.
One type of Houbi caused by external pathogens involves adding Belamcanda (Shegan) to dispersing formulas. One caused by emotional injury involves using Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction) or Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder), removing Atractylodes (Baizhu), and adding Belamcanda (Shegan), Platycodon (Jiegeng), and Mint (Bohe) to open the orifices. For Yin deficiency with hyperactive fire, Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) is used with added Mint (Bohe).
One type of sore throat that persists for a long time, even becoming ulcerated, in patients who have previously suffered from Syphilis (Shichuang), is treated with Bixie Fenqing San (Dioscorea Hypoglauca Decoction for Separating Turbid Urine).
One type of Houfeng with excessive phlegm-saliva filling the chest and heart, presenting with severe redness and swelling, and difficulty breathing, is treated by soaking paper in Croton Oil (Badou You), making it into a roll, lighting it, blowing it out, and inhaling the smoke through the nose. Saliva will flow from the mouth corner, and touching the affected area while urgently administering Jiangcan San (Silkworm Powder) is indicated.

Add a handful of Juncus (Dengxin), one slice of Ginger (Shengjiang), decoct in water. If fire is severe, add Scrophularia (Xuanshen) and Trichosanthes Root (Tianhuafen). If Lung is deficient, add Fritillaria (Chuanbeimu) and Poria (Fuling).
Jiangcan San (Silkworm Powder): Treats Houfeng.
