Wang Shishan treated a woman who, after childbirth, suffered from slippery diarrhea (profuse, uncontrollable diarrhea), unable to retain even a spoonful of water or a grain of rice; whatever she consumed was immediately expelled. This condition persisted for over half a month, and everyone considered her condition critical. Some used Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Poria Decoction) and Pingwei San (Calm the Stomach Powder), but the disease worsened. Wang examined her and found the pulse to be all soft, slow, and weak. He said, "This is due to injury of the stomach qi caused by exertion during labor. If decoctions are used, they will only further nourish dampness in the stomach, which is not appropriate." He instructed her to take Shenling Baizhu San (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder), removing Amomi Fructus Rotundus (Sharen), and adding Tangerine Peel (Chenpi) and Myristica Seed (Roudoukou). The powder was taken with decoction of Ginger and Jujube. After more than ten days, the diarrhea stopped.
[Appendix] Shen Yaofeng treated a woman who had lost a large amount of blood during delivery, followed by chills, sweating, and incessant diarrhea. A large dose of Zhenwu Tang (True Warrior Decoction) was used, substituting Dried Ginger (Ganjiang) for Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang). After two doses, the chills subsided, but sweating and diarrhea remained unchanged. After another two days of administration, the chills recurred. Then Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) was administered; lacking Ginseng, Aconite Root (Fuzi) was added. After two doses, the patient reported, "My abdomen feels extremely hot, and I am thirsty and desire to drink." However, sweating, diarrhea, and chills still did not decrease. Shen Yaofeng pondered deeply. The patient's mother said, "Her anus is like a hole that cannot close, and she lacks the strength to take Ginseng; there is likely no hope for survival." Shen then prescribed Astragalus Root (Huangqi) 5 qian, Prepared Schisandra Berry (Zhi Bei Wuweizi) 4 qian crushed, White Peony Root (Baishao) and Poria (Fuling) each 2 qian, stir-fried separately, Angelica Sinensis Root (Guishen) and Licorice Root (Gancao) each 1.5 qian, stir-fried separately, and three Jujubes (Dazao). After one dose, the condition improved; after four doses, she fully recovered.
Mr. Jin Dawen treated a woman who developed a rash on the third day postpartum. The rash was fine and granular, neither sparse nor dense. One dose of Schizonepeta Spike (Jingjie), Cicada Slough (Chantui), and Burdock Fruit (Niubangzi) allowed the rash to fully emerge on the head and face. The next day, it began to recede. Suddenly, she experienced several episodes of loose stools and felt restless spirit. When asked about her distress, she reported fever and thirst, and her speech sounded as if trembling out. Her pulse was faint and fine, rapid with seven beats per breath cycle (indicating extreme tachycardia). Externally, she exhibited signs of wanting to sleep, consistent with Shaoyin syndrome evidence. Jin said, "This is a syndrome of Yang collapse, belonging to the Shaoyin channel." He used Raw Aconite Root (Sheng Fuzi) 3 qian, washed and stir-fried until resembling fried rice; Dried Ginger (Ganjiang) stir-fried 8 fen; Licorice Root (Gancao) stir-fried 1 qian; White Peony Root (Baishao) stir-fried 1.5 qian. These were decocted in water, mixed with one tablespoon of human urine and four small teaspoons of Porcine Bile (Zhudanzhi). It was already dusk, so Pig Gallbladder was unavailable; instead, Green Fish Bile was used as a substitute. After taking the medicine, she fell asleep immediately. Upon waking, the fever and thirst were gone. Subsequently, Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (Astragalus and Middle-Warming Decoction) plus Salvia Root (Danshen) and Sappan Wood (Sumu) was continued. After two doses, she stabilized.
Yu Zhen’s commentary: These two cases demonstrate profound insight and great power, thus enabling recovery from near-death states. Compared to Wang’s case, they are ten times superior. However, in Wang’s case, where the patient could not retain even a drop of water or grain of rice, expelling it immediately, the condition was indeed critical. Yet the prescription was plain, merely employing the skill of converting powder into decoction, yet it was effective. This is because the pulse characteristics—soft, slow, and weak versus faint, fine, and rapid with seven beats per breath cycle—differ significantly in terms of stability and danger.
