Discussion: When a newborn infant passes blood in stool or urine within seven days after birth, this is caused by excessive heat in the fetal qi. If the mother consumes alcohol, wheat products, and roasted or fried hot-natured foods, these heat toxins flow into the Heart and Lung Meridians. The fetus, while in the womb, inherits this heat toxin, which also transmits to the Heart and Lungs. In females, heat enters the Heart, resulting in hematuria; in males, heat enters the Lungs, resulting in hematochezia (blood in stool). The blood appears pale with watery fluid, resembling an embryonic red color; when severe, the blood is bright red. For any such presentation, other medications should not be used. Instead, take the natural juice of Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), mix it with a small amount of honey until uniform, and administer warm orally for spontaneous recovery; it is effective for both males and females. Gan Lu Yin (Sweet Dew Decoction) can be taken concurrently, or decocting concentrated tea from Bai Mao Gen (Imperatae Rhizoma) and Mao Hua (Mao's Flower) is also beneficial. Xi Jiao Di Huang Tang (Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction) may also be administered. For Zang Du (Visceral Toxin), Ju Jin Wan (Gathering Gold Pill) and Di Huang Wan (Rehmannia Pill) are indicated. For Yu Xue (Blood Stasis), Tao Ren Cheng Qi Tang (Peach Kernel and Magnolia Bark Decoction) is indicated.

It also treats general yellowing of the body and face, limb edema, irregular bowel movements, and astringent, yellow urine.
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) Mai Men Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber, heart removed) Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, stir-fried) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, honey-fried) Yin Chen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) Pi Pa Ye (Loquat Leaf, hairs wiped off) Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis) Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) Tian Men Dong (Asparagi Tuber, heart removed). All in equal parts.
