Generally, all cases of epilepsy arise from fright, causing imbalance of visceral qi, stagnation leading to the generation of phlegm-saliva, obstruction of the meridians, and subsequent reversal of qi, resulting in the condition. It may result from fright received in the womb, exposure to wind-cold-summerheat-dampness in early childhood, or irregular diet causing rebellion of visceral qi. Cases due to prenatal fright and dietary factors are common, while those due to external pathogens occur occasionally.
There are three types of Xianzheng (Epilepsy):
The *Qianjin Fang* states: There are three types of pediatric epilepsy: Jingxian (Fright Epilepsy), Fengxian (Wind Epilepsy), and Shixian (Food Epilepsy). Jingxian (Fright Epilepsy) arises from fear and terror, occurring after loud crying or great shock. Fengxian (Wind Epilepsy) occurs because clothing covers too warmly, generating heat that produces wind. Initially, it presents with fingers curling as if counting objects. Shixian (Food Epilepsy) is caused by excessive milk and food intake, leading to stagnation, heat accumulation, and obstruction; during an episode, there is loss of appetite for milk, vomiting, fever, followed by epileptic seizures.
There are five names/types of Xianzheng (Epilepsy):
The *Sanyin Fang* states: Ancient formulas describe five types of epilepsy, corresponding to the five viscera. It also states that the manifestations during an attack have five types, with sounds resembling those of cattle, horses, pigs, sheep, and chickens. These syndromes are detailed in the adult section, but pediatric epilepsy is mostly composed of the aforementioned three types, among which Shixian (Food Epilepsy) is the most prevalent.
