The *Jingui Yaolue* states: When heat is located in the upper jiao (upper burner), it leads to Lung萎 (Lung atrophy/flaccidity) due to cough. This condition arises from excessive sweating, vomiting, polydipsia with frequent urination, or constipation followed by the misuse of harsh purgatives causing diarrhea, resulting in a severe loss of body fluids. Therefore, if the cunkou pulse is rapid, the patient coughs, and there are turbid saliva and frothy sputum in the mouth, this indicates Lung萎 (Lung atrophy/flaccidity). A deficiency-rapid lung pulse also indicates this condition. Generally, prolonged cough damages the Lung qi, gradually depleting the primordial qi. If the patient experiences alternating chills and fever and spontaneous sweating, Lung萎 (Lung atrophy/flaccidity) syndrome forms. The treatment method should focus on nourishing blood, regulating Lung qi, and clearing Lung metal (clearing the Lungs). For deficiency patterns, formulas such as Renshen Qingfei Tang (Ginseng Decoction for Clearing the Lungs) are appropriate.
A cunkou pulse that is rapid and deficient indicates Lung萎 (Lung atrophy/flaccidity). A rapid and excess pulse indicates Lung abscess (Fei Yong), which results from cough damaging the lungs and forming an abscess.
Renshen Pingwei San (Ginseng Powder for Calming the Stomach) treats fire pathogen overcoming Lung metal, transmitting into Lung萎 (Lung atrophy/flaccidity), manifesting as cough, wheezing, vomiting, copious phlegm-saliva, chest and diaphragm fullness and oppression, and throat discomfort.
Zhimu Fuling Tang (Anemarrhena and Poria Decoction) treats persistent cough due to Lung萎 (Lung atrophy/flaccidity), accompanied by alternating chills and fever and spontaneous sweating.
(Zhang Yuansu/Haizang) Ziwan San (Aster Powder) treats cough with pus and blood in the sputum, indicating impending development of consumptive disease, Lung萎 (Lung atrophy/flaccidity), or Lung abscess. (These three formulas are found in the Cough chapter.)
(Ge Hong) Baohe Wan (Harmony Preservation Pill) treats chronic coughing consumption developing into Lung萎 (Lung atrophy/flaccidity). (This formula is found in the Tuberculosis chapter.)
Runfei Gao (Moistening Lung Paste) treats Lung dryness leading to萎 (atrophy/flaccidity) due to prolonged cough.
Sheep Lung (one whole organ) Xingren (Apricot Seed, peeled and core removed, cleaned and ground) Shishuang (Persimmon Frost) Zhen Su (True Butter/Cream) Zhen Fen (True Rice Flour, each one tael) Bai Mi (White Honey, two taels)
First, clean the sheep lung thoroughly. Then insert the herbs into it, mix with water until uniformly viscous, and infuse the mixture into the lung. Cook in plain water until done and consume.
(*Qianjin Fang*) Shengjiang Gancao Tang (Fresh Ginger and Licorice Decoction) treats Lung萎 (Lung atrophy/flaccidity) with incessant coughing and expectoration of frothy sputum, dry throat, and thirst.
Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, two taels) Renshen (Ginseng Root, one tael) Gancao (Licorice Root, one and a half taels) Dazao (Jujube, fifteen fruits)
Add four bowls of water, boil down to two bowls, and divide into three doses.
Gancao Ganjiang Tang (Licorice and Dried Ginger Decoction) treats Lung萎 (Lung atrophy/flaccidity) with expectoration of frothy saliva and inability to cough. Such patients do not feel thirsty but inevitably suffer from urinary incontinence or frequent urination. This occurs because upper jiao deficiency fails to control the lower jiao. This indicates cold in the Lung, inevitably accompanied by dizziness.
Gancao (Licorice Root, roasted, two taels) Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, one tael)
Add four sheng of water, boil down to one sheng, and take warm.
Guizhi Zaojiao Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Gleditsia Decoction) treats Lung萎 (Lung atrophy/flaccidity).
Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig, one tael) Gancao (Licorice Root, half a tael) Dazao (Jujube, twelve fruits, pitted) Zaojiao (Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit, four strips, roasted, skin and fibrous membrane removed)
Divide into three doses and decoct in water.
