Chao Yuanfang stated: If a fetus is affected by maternal heat-toxin during gestation, after birth the entire body and face will exhibit high fever, constipation, yellow urine, frequent crying, and refusal to nurse.
The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) discusses: After birth, if an infant's entire body and face appear golden-yellow, accompanied by high fever, constipation, turbid red urine, loss of appetite for milk, and incessant crying, this is the manifestation of fetal jaundice (Taihuang). This is caused by maternal heat transmitted to the fetus. For those with these symptoms, the nursing mother should administer Dihuang Tang (Rehmannia Decoction).
For fetal jaundice (Taihuang) and fetal icterus (Taidan), both mother and child are suitable for taking Dihuang Tang (Rehmannia Decoction) and Dihuang Yinzi (Rehmannia Drink). If an infant under one hundred days old or half a year old has slight yellowing not due to post-illness recovery, it is due to stomach heat. If the yellowing is present from birth, it is fetal icterus (Taidan). The classics state: All types of icterus are heat-related; those with deep yellow color fall into this category, primarily treated with Xijiao San (Rhinoceros Horn Powder). If the color is pale yellow mixed with white, it indicates weak stomach qi, primarily treated with Baizhu San (Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder). (See formula in the Purging section.)

Infants who develop umbilical convulsion (Qifeng) after birth are mostly injured by wind-dampness after the umbilical cord is cut. When wind enters the umbilicus, it causes umbilical swelling and abdominal distension, mouth puckering, frequent crying, and inability to suckle, known as umbilical convulsion (Qifeng). If the pathogen enters the meridians, it often transforms into epilepsy (Xianbing) and should be treated as such.
Umbilical convulsion causing rigid limbs, incessant crying day and night, inability to suckle, and potentially developing into wind-tremors (Fengchu). If the area around the umbilicus turns cyan-black and the mouth cannot open, this is internal tremor (Neichu), which is incurable. Black fingernails indicate death.
